Road to Legend...worth to buy back the game just for the app?

By SolennelBern, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Two years ago I decided to sell my entire Descent 2nd edition collection due to the fact that no one wanted to play the Overlord and I got tired of playing it. So lacking the group and the motivation I sold everything. Then I tried the coop adventires with a friend. They were fine but they were lacking something.

I got Mansions of Madness 2nd edition (already have 1st edition) and I freaking love the game and the app, beautifully executed.

My question is: Is Road to Legend of similar quality and worth buying back into the game to only play coop with it?

Maybe..I guess?

The app is definitely more of a classic dungeon crawl and a lot of people like that! However, I don't think the app is much better than the coop expansions. It is better, but not a lot better.

No. There is not enough content yet. If they create 3+ more campaigns (not mini campaigns) that use tiles outside of core box then I would say "hell yes".

Ok so for now the app only use the core box components? Not that bad from a new buyer perspective :P

I suggest buying core and playing king of all goblins campaign. After that you could decide do you want new side quests, monsters, etc.

What's needed is really a separate game that is, if such floats your boat, app-driven.

I just hope Descent doesn't get canned in order to fulfill that.

Personally, I hate what they did to Mansions of Madness, and that they lied regarding it before launching "2nd" Edition. They should've simply made a different kind of game that appeals to different people, not take games away in order to warp them into something completely different.

There are tons of co-op dungeon crawlers out there: Myth, the upcoming CMON game etc. Why buying an inherently competitive game then?

On that note, speaking of FFG, why try to turn Descent into one? It boggles the mind.

I guess this is a popular demand and a market trend right now. I am seeing a lot of coop dungeon crawlers on Kickstarter raising $100k+ easily later time.

And tripled sales tell, alas, that this was the right move

Yes and no. The mini-campaign and campaign can be played using only the core box components. There are several side quests that take advantage of components from the other expansions. A side quest has been created for each box expansion that uses that box's tiles, and each Hero and Monster collection has a side quest that was created for those components, and apparently gives the option to use tiles from an expansion. The app also does a great job using monsters from the various expansions in each quest.

As for myself, I think the app justifies buying the core set. Although I have owned several Descent expansions for some time, it never hit the gaming table because nobody from my gaming group wanted to play the overlord. Thanks to the app we play Descent quite a bit now, including playing through the mini-campaign several times, and we are now working our way through the full campaign a second time.

So the app offers one mini and one full campaign?

Yes. The full one is great and there are a lot of hours there but its only 1 real campaign.

Just to be clear the mini campaign is basically a tutorial. You play a full on step by step tutorial intro, go to town, play a side quest then onto the finale.

There is only one actual campaign, but it is good for replay factor. We're on play through 4 with about 80 hrs of play. At £65 for a core that's good value if we never play again compared to a video game. And there is no doubt in my mind we will play through again after this one. I'm already planning out my heros!

Massive Darkness, Sword&Sorcery, Shadows of Brimstone, D&D: Wrath of Ashardalon, D&D: The Legend of Drizzt, Mice&Mystics, Pathfinder, Dark Souls

For the record, I am huge into cooperative dungeon crawlers. I've done most of the ones mentioned by Spawn Garret above.

I bought back into Descent thanks to the app. I originally sold it because the competetive nature turned me off. I thought it was a nice game and all, but my group likes cooperative.

We are loving it right now. As mentioned above, there is only one campaign now, but it's clear they are working on more- they just released a ton of new side quests. From memory right now there are (in the main campaign):

8 main quests w/ only the core set

8 side quests w/ only the core set

1 extra side quest per heroes & monsters set you own

1 bonus quest for each expansion you own

That adds up to hours and hours of entertainment. Worth it to me! I'm in for the app.

My gaming group just decided they wanted to try a co-op crawler after having our Imperial player, in Imperial Assault, lose 3 campaigns straight. I had already owned everything up to and including The Trollfens expansion (less the Lt. figs.). When I quote Descent it was because nobody that I was gaming with wanted to play against the Overlord (typically me). They wanted co-op and they struggled with the game. Now that we have RtL, I have 2 separate groups that are willing to sit down and start playing the game with renewed vigor. I can't wait for more campaigns to be added, and I also can't wait for them to finish developing the companion app for Imperial Assault, since that will give my IA group a reason to play without someone feeling hurt for losing.

I see. I know most of these, but gotta check this massive darkness and shadow of brimstone. Thanks :)

Shadows of Brimstone is a dungeon crawl in a Western/Lovecraftian Mythos setting, it's pure gold!

I am actually painting up the minis for Shadows of Brimstone for my buddies before we play.

I didn't like Descent with the overlord role, but I am very much enjoying with my group the campaign with the app.

We just played through the first mission and side mission of the goblin king and already my friends are loving the app far more than the base game with an overlord.
