New Player to Force and Destiny, Advice

By Deschainking, in Star Wars: Force and Destiny RPG

Hey, everybody. I was just curious about starting a character. I want to do a Mirialan Seeker, Ataru Striker. We are doing basic builds, no Knight level. I want to beef up his Characteristics, Brawn 3, Agility 3, Intellect 2, Cunning 2, Willpower 3, and Presence 2. He'll be up front for the most part, dealing damage. With that, I have 14 wounds and 13 strain.

For Skills, Career I am going with Vigilance, Xenology, and Piloting (Planetary). Specialization, Lightsaber and Coordination, Thought I have been thinking about changing that for Athletics.

I get the Discipline and Cool for the Mirialan Species.

For Talents, I have Jump Up, Quick draw, and Ataru Technique.

This leaves me with 10 experience.

What I am asking you is, How does the build look? Where can i improve? Is there anything I should lose? And what about that final 10 experience?

Any advice is welcome and appreciated, thanks!

If you're taking a lightsaber spec for your starting spec, I'd advise getting either a training saber (useful if you don't want and don't need to kill your opponents, but can't crit) or an ancient sword (relies some on Brawn for damage, but can crit and will draw less attention than a training saber).

Edit: Dear stars, when will I get it into my head that aliens start with a 3 in one stat? >_<

Typically, most advice suggests sinking XP into characteristics, which you seem to have done well, but I'm fuzzy about the math...

...and you got this quick reply as I wrote...^^^

Do you have any special rules we may need to know, like starting with a lightsaber (else, just a training lightsaber)? What options will you take with your Morality/XP/$$ choice? Who else rounds out your party, to provide complementary skills/talents or to fill party gaps?

Haha. I thought that's what you might have been referring to. I did use 80 points on Characteristics alone. I also took the 10 points for Morality.

Thanks for the welcome! I am happy to be here.

The math I have is, 30 points for the Brawn from 2 to 3. 20 for Cunning from 1 to 2. And 30 for Willpower up to 3.

No real special rules. We are playing a mix of Edge and FaD, a buddy wants to be a Twi'lek Spy. And I am not totally sure of the choice of the third in the group. He will most likely be our Face. The GM has said that a training lightsaber is possible but I would have to fill it in with my backstory, which I have an idea.

You could get another "3" in an attribute by skipping the Talents at chargen. You probably won't notice the lack of the talents you've chosen because you'll be able to buy them within a couple of sessions...but a 2 will always be there :)

That said, it looks like a good build, well rounded.

Since you have a decent Brawn, I'd still suggest an ancient sword, unless you're specifically after a non-lethal option. Without looking at my book, I think the ancient sword's damage is Brawn+2. 5 damage ain't bad, and it really is much better for avoiding attention. Are you playing in the standard time period?

A melee weapon would be a great idea to remain inconspicuous. I might have to get get my hands on an Ancient Sword. You were right on with the stats.

We are playing just before A New Hope. The Emperor is alive and well so I should fly under the radar as best as possible.

I didn't even think about loading all experience into characteristics. Not a bad idea, maybe Presence to help out with Cool and starting encounters.

Ill definitely second the "Another 3" from whafrog. This is especially helpful if this could be a long running campaign as your all roundedness will be nice.

If your group is inclined to shorter campaigns and regular rotation through characters then I would even consider a 4 in Agility, it will help you be the group pilot and also help in combat. (eg: 2, 4 , 2, 2, 3, 2 and keep the talents) (alternately this is possible: 3, 4, 2, 1, 3, 2 with your Morality option still available, but its on the extreme end of options)

Getting to the dedication can take a good 3 or even 4 sessions if your getting other things along the way, if you don't have to rush there then it frees up your xp choices earlier on in the campaign.

If a training lightsaber is out of the question, I'd suggest a training stick (can be found in Nexus of Power) as an inconspicuous alternative that doesn't even say "weapon".

As a starting character with Brawn 3, you don't need Ataru Technique right away - but you need it to get to Parry or Reflect, so if you want to also spend 10 XP on Reflect, taking it now makes sense.

Thanks! I think another 3 will be better for a longer campaign, as you suggested. We'll be sticking to this campaign for a while having just finished our last EotE game.

It's a pretty standard school of thought for this system. The reason being once you are out of character gen, you can't increase characteristics without a LOT more work. Either buying cybernetics (which have their own drawbacks), or buying aaaaallll the way down to the bottom of a spec tree, and buying Dedication. It's a lot of effort to just raise one characteristic by one point. Whereas at chargen, you can dump every single point you've got into characteristics, and it's perfectly fine. Then, after 1-2 sessions, you've probably got 20-40 xp to play with, which you can easily dump into career skills, or talents, making you a LOT more effective. It's a "long term plan" outlook as opposed to "immediate utility" approach. It lets you have the most potential for character growth in skills in the long run, with the drawback of you being slightly less effective when you first start out. But like I said above, this is quickly fixed with just a handful of xp from your first few sessions.

You all make very good arguments. I'll take the additional 3.
