Different take on Double Ds

By CHEEKSx36, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hey all, playing with my casual group this weekend and wanted to change things up a bit instead of running the usual aces or double x7s. Feel like ill miss that free evade token, but I also think itd be fun/crazy to have two double tapping defenders with ruthlessness. If I can land the hits...

Glaive Squadron pilot

-Ruthlessness

-Tie/D

-Tractor Beam

Glaive Squadron pilot

-Ruthlessness

-Tie/D

-Ion Canon

Scimitar Squadron Pilot

-Tie Shuttle

-Fleet Officer

-Systems Officer

Got a buddy who's been itching to play double ghosts and a Y with autoblasters, and I'm also expecting some falcon play with some proxied HOTR cards/pilots. So I'm expecting a good amount of low agility ships which would hopefully be in my favor. Wasn't quite sure what to fill the 20 or so points with either, figured some support via dice mods would help. Any Suggestions?

Havent tried ruthlessness yet (too scared im gonna blown my own ships up, hehe) Not sure if I want a bomber to be my entire squads dice mods though. Maybe drop one ruthlessness for a predator. Ive been thinking of a bomber with LRS for Vesserys instant TL. Or a shuttle with rebel captive so it won't be attacked.

Colonel Vessery (39)
TIE Defender (35), Tractor beam (1), Ruthlessness (3), TIE/D (0)

Countess Ryad (40)
TIE Defender (34), Ion Cannon (3), Predator (3), TIE/D (0)

Scimitar Squadron Pilot (21)
TIE Bomber (16), TIE Shuttle (0), Rebel Captive (3), Tactician (2)

EDIT: Could even go Mara Jade, to instantly stress anyone so your defenders can kturn and attack and your opponents cant.

Ruthlessness is good on the initial pass it can potentially let a defender do six damage, it can be game winning but yeah once things get into a hairy furball there's a good chance you can damage yourselves instead.

That said it's won me several games.

Ruthlessness certainly ain't bad on a TIE/D defender. But NEVER take more than one! You WILL damage your own squads if you have multiples.

Vessery w/ TIE/D, tractor beam & ruthlessness = 39

That's the absolute best ruthless build in the game imho.

Glaive w/ TIE/D, ion cannon + predator = 40

Can make a good wingman (or Ryad if you prefer)

A shuttle is not bad, but a lowly Seinar Test pilot w/ v-1 + autothrusters is 19 points and can serve as a useful blocker and target lock baby-sitter for Vessery. Although using a blocker with Ruthless Vessery can bite you in the ass if you aren't careful...

Haha, yeah, I wouldnt use a blocker if you are running Ruthlessness. That can go bad, especially against large ships you cant TB away from. Go for a tactician shuttle to stress, or a Scimitar with LRS + Fletchette Torps or Plasmas + EM.

Well, actually its not as bad as you might think since you have control over your own ships ;)

Just don't use your blocker against 2 ship enemy builds, unless thte situation will result in more damage to the enemy. Your blocker is expendable after all, and actually, with 2 hull + 2 shields, he can usually survive 2 ruthless damage.....once (because Ruthless Vessery can deal 2 splash damage assuming both the tractor and primary shot hit).

Edit- I read the FAQ from 4/2/16, they added "may".

Edit:

I ran this earlier tonight. I need more practice with it, but I still pulled out the "W".

The x7 title is so amazing because you get that evade token even if you´re blocked and can´t complete your maneuver. The 2 point price reduction is also huge. I have been toying with Defender lists with x7 recently and now when I try to use the other title everything becomes too costly and every list I come up with feels thin.

Keep in mind that you have to move ships using tractor beam... it's easy to tractor stuff into R1 of yourself, for good and bad...

No you don't. The movement from tractor beam is optional.

Edit: also you can't damage yourself with Ruthlessness. It says so specifically on the card.

Ooh, you're absolutely right. The reference card has been errata'd to add "may". I didn't pick up on that.
