Howard Aces List, What is It?

By chico2323, in X-Wing

Hello just looking to get clarification on what list is referred to as Howard Aces?

I think it is standard Palpatine shuttle + Soontir + Carnor Jax? (both with PTL, auto thrusters, blah blah)?

Howard Aces (99)

Soontir Fel (35) - TIE Interceptor

Push The Limit (3), Royal Guard TIE (0), Autothrusters (2), Stealth Device (3)

The Inquisitor (31) - TIE Adv. Prototype

Push The Limit (3), TIE/v1 (1), Autothrusters (2)

Omicron Group Pilot (33) - Lambda-Class Shuttle

Sensor Jammer (4), Emperor Palpatine (8), Emperor Palpatine (8)

I've seen that name applied to Whisper, OL and the PS4 Lambda whos name eludes me with Palp. Not sure where exactly that name comes from and what it is supposed to mean when its pretty much just some minor variation of Palpaces.

I believe that is the 'Mynock Special', with Whisper, OL and Capt. Yorr w/ Palp (of course).

Edit: The name comes from the Howard brothers, who have flown the list with success. The Mynock Special is named by/from the Mynock Podcast, who put it forth on their podcast and have flown their version of Palpaces with success as well.

There are lots of Palpaces variants out there, many of which have had varying levels of success.

Yeah, and there's "Imperial A*holes," which I think is Carnor, Omega Leader, Wampa, and Palpshuttle (with usual builds).

Inquisitor can also be in place of Carnor for that build. Some very good Palp Aces list and I'm curious if they'll survive the meta long enough for worlds. I've switched to triple defenders because I don't have to rely on Palp and with the anti-ace stuff coming out I feel the defenders will fair better.

Whisper, OL, Yorr-Palp Shuttle is the Mynock special IF it has Kallus on Whisper.

If it has IA or something else , I totally gonna claim it as mine, together with most likely a thousand other guys who did came up with Whisper, OL, Yorr, it quite on obvious combination, but Kallus really can make a large difference.

The special thing about the howards special is btw the Sensor Jammer on the shuttle, which really is brilliant imo. PS9 and PS8 from Soontir and the Inquisitor, two of the most effective high-PS ships in the game and a defensive mechnic which stripps a focus token from each attacker of the shuttle OR denies one damage. It covers basically for the weakness of the list with that 4 point upgrade. I wish I would have come up with that, but I thought first that FCS on the shuttle would have been more useful, right now I favor really the sensor jammer even when collision detectors and proton rockets are really, really tempting soon. Well, or just using Jax who does at range 1 an even better job at suppressing tokens, but is way less reliable.

But how is Kallus on Whisper remotely interesting when thats the first place everyone put him on?

Look, I get that always spelling out lists is a mouthfull and its fun to put your own name on to something. But in X-Wing there are so narrow options that it usually detracts from the discussion because these terms aren't intuitive enough. For example I remember a thread by PGS: "Can't you just slap down Regen Poe and Corran and be done with it" where he hypothethized you could just run bloated Corran and Poe similar to 86 Phantoms. I didn't agree and quickly conjured up the list that Nathan used to take second place at worlds. Most pilots have optimal loadouts and combining them isn't hard. Naming a Palpaces list beyond the amount of ships isn't productive, because anyone could have come up with it.

Of course everything here is opinion me, but I believe competetive discussion benefits from less obscure and more descriptive names.

In general I would even go one step further and say that any name outside of whole archetype groups like palp aces, Triple Scouts or rebel regen is not very helpful, simply because it gets easily to obscure, while at the same time optimal setups are easy to guess AND for the special variations simple names are not very useful to remember,.

Though that does not change that people like the give list names and ones your list becomes popular you totally gonna enjoy your 5mins of fame even when it really is an impractical habit, it seems still to be a thing within the X-Wing community. Properly used it like all nicknames, shortcuts and acronyms useful. The Mynock Podcast for example explains always first what a certain list consist off, defines with that the content of a list with a certain name and continuous to use the established name for the rest of the podcast. That is really a best practise case and it really would not hurt if the forum as a whole would adopt that practise … especially as it would eliminate the need for topics like this one. ^_^

True, thats a sollution that preserves the fun part about naming lists. Of course it means effort, so its not the easiest thing to get into peoples mind.
