Darkness & Light Sources

By any2cards, in Mansions of Madness

Today, while playing, we came across the following:

  1. Current space has Darkness.
  2. Investigator within that space (the one with Darkness) has a light source.
  3. Mythos event triggers which affects each investigator in a space containing darkness.

The rules specify that in the above scenario, investigators ignore anything that occurs due to Darkness as a trigger, since we have a light source.

But the Mythos event specifically specifies that any investigator in a space containing Darkness must suffer X amount of horror and X amount of damage.

A discussion ensued with the group split pretty evenly as to whether or not the investigator in this room must take the horror and damage.

Half the group felt that a Light source mitigated the darkness and allowed that investigator to ignore the Mythos event.

Half the group felt that the Mythos event was focused on the fact that the space (a specifically mentioned room) itself was a space in Darkness, and didn't care whether or not the investigator had a light source.

Looking for opinions as to how you would deal with this situation?

The same scenario happened in my last play through. The wording of the mythos event was a little confusing, but I ruled that the light source negated the darkness.

I believe Julia's interpretation of the rules is correct. There's two ways the Mythos event will be worded:

1) This mythos event affects investigators in a space containing darkness...

2) This mythos event affects investigators in darkness...

For the 1st type it doesn't matter if you have a light source or not. If you're in a space with darkness you are affected. For the 2nd if you have a light source in a space containing darkness then you are not affected by the event. Thematically think of the 1st scenario as:

As you hold your candle high the darkness closes in around you until even the glow of the candle seems all but extinguished. The groaning of the walls becomes louder and louder and all you can do is cower. Suffer 2 horror.

If this is true (and it is the position I took in the discussion), it assumes that FFG has been very precise in its wording throughout the app.

If you have absolutely any experience at all in playing their games, you know that this level of accuracy often is lacking.

I don't know they're not that bad. I've seen both wordings as well hence why I know that there's two types.

Usually Nikki's games are really precise with wording.

You may certainly ask the question directly to FFG, tho. It pops up very often, so, having an official ruling to refer to could be helpfuk.

Question submitted to FFG. I will post the answer when I receive it. Thanks to all for their input.

I finally received a response from FFG's Kara. Here is her response:

Hey again Will,
The investigator with the Light Source ignores Darkness, so the investigator would not be in Darkness in the event that a mythos event affected an investigator in Darkness. This issue has since been added to the FAQ, since many groups had a similar experience to yours.
Thanks for playing,
