So I lost some of my collection in a fire...

By Comradebot, in X-Wing

Just as the topic says. Few weeks back my old house burned down, and while I technically moved out a while ago I still had a lot of stuff there I hadn't yet found the time to pack up and find a place to store at my new place.

Thankfully, *most* of my collection I'd already taken with me to play some games with. Less fortunately, I still had a handful of X-Wing goodness that is now nothing more than a pile of ash. My GR-75, Gozanti (plus some docked TIEs), and much of the material that came with both of them (and the material that came with the Raider, though the Raider itself miraculously survived!) is, well... poof. Poor epic ships, it's what they get for being too massive and beautiful to fit inside my tackle box.

I've heard FFG is apparently super cool with helping out with these situations, but I want to make sure I handle it properly. Could someone please tell me the proper way to go about asking FFG if they could help me out?

And before anyone asks, yes, everyone is okay. Lost a lot of stuff that can never truly be replaced, sure, but that's the worst of it. Which is probably why I'm just now finding the time to try and see about getting replacements for my little toy Star Wars ships.

Weird question, but did you have homeowner's/renter's insurance? This is specifically the sort of thing that's for.

While it's possible that FFG will replace your product, I can't imagine ever asking. It's not like it was defective or missing a part.

What I was going to say.

a) Did you have insurance?
b) If no, unlucky.

I had the unfortunate case of someone breaking into my friend's home where they had my Corvette and Raider on display with a few X's and other small based models. All they stole was alcohol, some insignificant jewellery and my X-Wing models. It was a sad day and I simply don't have the cash to replace them.

In short, I feel your pain sir, I really do. But it is unreasonable to ask and/or expect FFG to replace them.

Yeah, this isn't on FFG at all. You need to go through Home Owners / Renters insurance for that. Expecting FFG to cover your lost models from a fire isn't reasonable. Now, if you had just lost the cards/cardboard or something, explaining and asking if FFG could provide just the cardboard/pilot cards would be reasonable. But expecting actual models...

Oh, I do, I just swear I could've read stories about FFG being incredibly cool about this sort of thing in the past. It'll probably be a good while until I can have all the insurance claim stuff but together, and well... I miss my ships.

Didn't think it'd hurt to ask, at least.

It won't hurt to ask, I just wouldn't get my hopes up too high.

Not only do you have insurance? But do you have some proof of what you owned? Does anyone here have actual experience filing a claim from a home fire? Given insurance companies want to pay out as little as possible...I cannot imagine you can just list all your possessions including furniture, clothes, electronics, and x-wing stuff.

Otherwise all your furniture was solid wood, namd brand clothing, 70" tvs, and an entire fleet of x-wing ships to build every possible epic list.

...

Kinda depends on the policy, but sometimes you actually can just list out what you owned. They don't always ask for proof. Kinda depends on the situation and what you say was stolen. My buddy's car was broken into and they took his after market stereo and his binder full of CDs. He had all the cases at home, so when they asked for a list of what was taken, he listed the make and model of the stereo plus every single CD that had been in the case... something like 200 or so.

About a month later, he got a package from the insurance company with replacement discs for all 200 CDs. It was unreal. He was expecting a check, but they actually replaced the discs. The insurance company didn't question it because it was super normal back then to have a binder of CDs in your car.

Yea, I should probably take pictures of all my **** for insurance purposes. They'd never believe me when i turned in the list.

Well, in the past it's been situations where people have had portions of their collection stolen or damaged, such that they needed a few cards or maneuver dials to use their ships again.

For whole new products--especially those theoretically covered by an existing insurance policy--is a bit different in kind.

Chances are, if you have car insurance, you also have renters insurance. This is exactly the type of thing this kind of issuance covers.

Sorry for your loss, but a business isn't likely going to replace things lost from theft or fire.

Maybe in a perfect world, but that is what insurance is for

If a business was to replace things lost in a fire, you know what would happen the?. Suddenly there be a influx of "I lost things in a fire" sad as it is to say, people are scrupulous.

All I can say is at least nobody was hurt, and only material items were lost. Nothing that can't be replaced over time. As much as it dies suck, hope for the best

You are probably thinking of the time someone lost all the cardboard to a flood. The ships were intact. In that case I do believe that FFG did send out the cardboard but that is quite different from your situation. It was also from before the Asmodee merger, which has had an effect on FFG customer service or so I am told. The criteria for replacements is quite a bit stricter now I believe.

I feel for your loss but as many have already said what you have is something that could/should be covered by an insurance claim.

Now this may be cold hearted of me but I certainly hope this does NOT turn into a go-fund-me listing where so many of the good hearted people on this board feel the need to make a donation to rebuild the damaged collection. Before you say I'm crazy I have certainly seen it before where the sob story takes more in for donations that it would cost to replace everything that was lost at full retail prices. It may not be true here but cons have come in all kinds of methods.

This happened to someone locally early this summer and, as discussed, his insurance company took care of it.

The few ships that "survived" are some of the most battle damaged ones you can imagine. The corvette looks like it's the process of blowing up, with engines pointing every which way!

Sorry for your loss but this isn't on ffg.

Are you talking about the time fella wasn't sure if his models were lost or stolen? Generous fellas were donating ships and actual $ on paypal to rebuild his army stating things like "It's for a good cause!" .. that was an embarrassment for humanity.

Didn't think it'd hurt to ask, at least.

No, it doesn't hurt to ask. I've had a ship with a faulty moulding replaced free of charge, minus cards of course. FFG are excellent with things like that.

As it is, I'm sorry you lost lots of hobby investment. You could probably open a Kickstarter or something to see if generous-type people will help you recoup some of your losses.

And hey, nobody died.

That could be the one. It has been a little while ago and I've forgotten many of the details on it but that certainly could be it.

I thought it was for a very common poster here. If it is the one I was thinking of he got nearly all of the monies he set as his goal. If wasn't paypal though but a fund raiser site. People were very generous.

I never really thought about it. But I often said I have more than enough for both sides to play a 400 point epic game. Well that doesn't even include the Epic ships or large ships. I settling in on my storage issues then I guess I need to take pictures on everything laid out nice and neat. That is a lot of ships and dollars.
