First Timer - What to bring, tips, etc

By TheWanderingMiller, in Arkham Nights

Hello all. I'm hoping to attend Arkham Nights 2016. I'll be flying in from Atlanta by myself and this will be my first Arkham Nights. I was wondering:

Other than the standard travel items, what should I bring? Do I need to bring any of my games or will all the games be provided?

I'll probably stay at one of the nearby hotels. Do I need a car? Are there restaurants within walking distance?

Any other tips or comments?

Thanks!

Alright, so this will be my fourth year, so I'll see if I can help out. Other than standard travel items? Not much. If you want anything signed by designers, bring those things, as they are usually all there for the arkham games or at least three or four of them.

All the games are provided. There are a bunch of tables set up when you get there, and usually enough volunteers to help run each of those tables, or at least bounce between a couple of them.

If you're at the Raddison or Keys, they are a couple blocks away, so you don't technically need a car. I'll be staying at the Keys Inn, I've never had a problem with it, despite the low reviews, and it's over half the cost for me. Anything else, and you might need a car.

The event center serves food. Surprisingly good food actually. I know there is a Buffalo Wild Wings down the street, and there was an old country buffet there too. Actually there is plenty of food, but you would want a car if you want something other than the event center food.

All in all, it's not a huge thing. Just relax, and have a good time. I've never had a bad time there, and I always make sure that I can make the 7 hour drive up from the south chicago suburbs to get there each year. Be warned however, this year may be a bit more energetic as the hype for the Arkham Horror card game is pretty high, so I'm hoping it shoots up attendance.

I am going to be there solo as well it looks like. I'm flying in from Toronto. I was hoping to make a weekend of it with my wife, but she has a big project at work falling on that weekend.... Really looking forward to it. My first "con" experience!

Appreciate the info - I am a first time attender as well. Roped my wife into joining but she is coming along 'just for fun' and isn't into the games like I am. She will probably take an uber to do some shopping or something for a few hours to break up the day on Saturday. I am most looking forward to AH LCG, though I also would love to play a rousing game of MoM 2e or two. Should have a couple new scenarios out by then for sure and maybe we can even preview/demo some others that are in the pipeline...

Thanks for the advice Doma. I just booked at the Radisson for $109 a night and they still had rooms available. Now I just need to figure out if I should fly in on Thursday night or Friday morning. I know the event doesn't technically start until 5pm Friday, but would there be other things going on in the store say around noon or would it be dead?

I always show up around 3-5 thursday. It's a gaming store with a looooot of tables. It'll be busy pretty much constantly, and they have a whole wall of games to demo before the event. Last year I spent a day and a half just sleeving my entire set of Arkham Horror, and was invited to play in a draft for magic the gathering as well as other things. So yeah, even if you're early, you won't be bored.

Also how in the world did you get a room for $109? The cheapest I saw was $180. Oh well no matter, I'm actually okay with the Key Inn, though I wouldn't recommend it for anyone with too many standards. I'm staying 3 nights and the $78 average means I have more money to spend at the store.

I snagged a couple nights at the Home2 Suites by Hilton up near the walmart. Hoping the weather is decent enough to walk, most of the time. Probably take a taxi/uber if we need to go anywhere else.

the radisson has a discounted rate for the event, it's listed on one of the event pages (kind of hidden). i called and they gave me the same rate. not sure what they have left but give it a shot if you want a bit more luxury!

Wife and I will be attending for the first time as well. Looking forward to seeing you all. Should be a lovely time.

Will be happy to game outside of the event as well.
