[OFF TOPIC] FFG and Games Workshop end relationship

By GreyMatter, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

If it means they have some personnel with the available bandwidth, perhaps they can produce some EotE books? I will very subtly suggest

A BOUNTY HUNTER CAREER BOOK!

But only very subtly...

I think they knew this was coming for a while. There hasn't been much action in the Warhammer universe from FFG lately. I suspect they saw a drop in interest, and just planned to finish what was in the queue. I would be worried for Star Wars, except FFG holds both miniature and role-playing licence. I'm sure miniatures are the profitable end, but you know that RPG's will sell well, and possibly create a cross-over market.

It has in my group. I can't speak to the RPG books since we seem quite able to get by with just one copy of everything at the table but I think we've made up for it in X-Wing and Armada minis and accessories. I'd like to add Imperial Assault to the list, too.

Edit to add:

The interest definitely started with the RPG, though. It's what got us to try the miniatures games. Maybe it goes the other way for some?

This is definitely the case. I am a long time role-player, and branched into mini's from that. I ended up with Warhammer 40K, and because of that, bought Dark Heresy from FFG. I have a few of FFG's minis, but am having enough challenges keeping up with everything RPG.

I do think they may have shot themselves in the foot by not arranging the minis games to integrate better into the RPG. I like the narrative, but I think if they issued an optional cross-over book, which integrated some crunchy range/movement rules with the miniatures, mini sales would skyrocket. I'm not interested in the full X-wing or Imperial Assault ruleset, just a bit more crunch so maps and minis could be more useful.

I guess its just as well they don't do it. My wife would kill me as I drain my bank account to buy all the minis.

I don't think that an DnD style gaming which can use miniatures very well would have helped FFGSWRPG much. It would rather say it would be totally unsuccessful because it brings nothing good and new to the table.

TIE-Ins are good if they make the game better, but first you need a good product. A DnD clone does not help FFG much in that regard, especially with Star Wars Saga been around before.

Besides the X-Wing and Imperial Assault games are selling very well on their own as they improve on the descent and wings of glory formula and very clever ways and are basically still imho genre reference games. Creating a new theme for a successful game is a lot easier to develop then complete new games for TIE-Ins. So in general I really prefer the FFG approach because it produces more reliable great star wars games.

With all that said: Asmodee buying Games Workshop in 2017, you heard it here first. They are outgrowing GW fast and they might have dealt with most of their loans by the end of 2017 to go on another shopping spree. GW might fit the taste of Asmodee as the IPs are great and could be easily integrated into FFGs portfolio.

They're my favorite iconic ships too!

Few years back FFG started a relationship with Blizzard for World of Warcraft (The Board game and the Adventure game) and came with some expansions but before the final expansions were announced they divorced each other.

I was a big fan of world of warcraft and both FFG games about world of warcraft was fantastic.

so i was disappointed and moved on...

Then I fell in love with Warhammer invasion LCG but that also stopped in my opinion to make room for Warhammer Conquest 40k so I followed conquest and now

FFG and GW are going to divorce.

Perhaps FFG/Asmodee should stick with their world of Terrinoth as clearly Terrinoth belongs to FFG and no one else..

in the meantime I feel Conquest and Invasion LCG had so much more to offer and so many future publications but just like world of warcraft the ending such as this is not well received.

I had been quietly hoping for a WFRPG 4.0*, a series of books that was a blend of the SWRPG system and WFRPG 3.0. Not happening now unfortunately and I can't imagine another company having the guts to try their own Narrative dice system in the Age of Sigmar universe. Oh well, L5R can carry my hopes of another Narrative Fantasy setting.

*(Drop the cards, smaller but more numerous Specialisations, broader Careers. Core book with a bit of everything, Magic book, Religion book, Dwarf book, Elf book, Underworld/Criminal book, Middle class book, Rich and Noble book. Each with a spread of PC material, location material, NPC material, new rules; essentially a blend of the Career & Location books we are getting from SW.)

I would personally kill many bothans to bring this information to you...

There is only one emperor now.

And he'll still send inquisitors after you.

I guess the topic of "All Star Wars should be in one forum" will be kind of moot after this. I can only assume all the GW based RPG's forums will be archived and Star Wars will practically be all thats left.

Edit:

7 GW based RPG's

9 Star Wars

5 Other

WH40K and Warhammer were just badly done miniature rules to market miniatures.

I really REALLY wanted to get into warhammer, and sat down and figure out how much I would need to spend to get a standard army bought, then how much time and money painting them. Then i realized from some players that no one played my faction (high elves) because they dont use Magic.. or it wasn't a strong faction.... or even getting beaten by a mysterious errata published in a magazine that i never got and the rule books were never updated.

I don't know if FFG is going to do another RPG with their narrative dice approach, but I'd love to see it. They've got Android to work with I suppose. A fantasy system would be great, I'd go for that in a heartbeat.

Narrative Legend of the Five Rings? yes, yes please. I figure they will want to put their own spin on it to make it stand out from the previous systems.

Narrative Legend of the Five Rings? yes, yes please.

I would like to preorder this game now, please.

Also, a 15th anniversary narrative edition of Midnight, because who wouldn't want a high fantasy game about rebels fighting an evil empire.

Perhaps FFG/Asmodee should stick with their world of Terrinoth as clearly Terrinoth belongs to FFG and no one else..

By all means, don't! Really, please, PLEASE, dont! Please, with icing on top, and cream, and cherries, and those little crunchy bits, don't!

That setting, if possibly not the worst Fantasy setting, is definitely a prime medal aspirant. Well, I saved a lot on Battlelore after the relaunch, at least.

I suspect they saw a drop in interest, and just planned to finish what was in the queue.

While it's admittedly a small and possibly skewed sampling of the roleplaying scene; according to the last demographics I saw on Roll 20, 40K RPG's are doing just fine in terms of popularity.

But I doubt the 40k RPG can cover the cost of the entire GW license, hence the decision.

GW is handing out their licence these days like candy and having an RPG only licence would be for sure possible, the issue is most likely that FFG and/or Asmodee are not interested into a limited licences as it lacks synergies to a full warhammer series of products and does only promote GW products.

But as mentioned, I would not rule out FFG buying GW at a later point in time, they for sure have outgrown them by a large margin and they have a big private equity investor behind them to infuse them with capital for their shopping sprees.

^If they woukd buy it then they will have a hell of a job making it into a human company again. I worked for that cesspool some years could not recommend against anything more than that!

Mr Burns meets Comic Book Guy? That's how GW always comes across to me.
