Movies to get you into the Warhammer mood

By Magnus the Pious, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

Now I know there are no real warhammer movies out there but I was wondering what movies people would recommend as a good movie to get you jazzed to play Warhammer. I just watched Brotherhood of the Wolf again the other night and next thing you know I was thinking about Warhammer and my next adventure. So now I'm trying to think of Warhammer themed movies to maybe start watching or rewatching again. Thinking maybe Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow or something. It's funny how when you know all these movies but when it comes down to actually thinking about them I draw a complete brain fart.

Also, check out the trailer for the new Solomon Kane movie...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lalm_kkczVM.

Plunkett and McLane - Dilettante and scumbag join forces for adventure and remain one step ahead of the corrupt authorities.

The 13th Warrior - Group of warriors with token other 'race' join forces to defeat an incursion of 'supernatural' enemies.

I like Jan Svankmajer stuff and his Faust should be on everyone's "to watch" list (not just because Warhammer plays with a lot of Faustian themes but because it is excellent and a genuinely creepy film).

I know a lot of Warhammer developers in the past have rated Terry Gilliam, particularly Jabberwocky with it's isolated walled cities, corrupt nobles, thuggish knights and dirty ignorant peasants.

Oh, and massive mutant monsters in the woods.

The movie with Rutger Hauer and Jennifer Jason Leigh... Flash + Blood aka The Rose and The Sword.

It does look pretty sweet doesn't it? :)

Kane is either gonna be a wild good fun rumpus or its gonna suck badly.

As for good movies to watch Japperwoky do see it v1 even had the creature in it ^^.
Ladyhawk, just cus Hauger rocks.
The directors cut of Kingdom of Heaven, good for the whole BIG war clash feel.
Jason and the Golden Fleece.
The two big battles in LotR, don't mind the other stuff for warhammer, but the battles are still awesome.
Brothers Grimm, go go charlatans and dirty superstitious peasants.
In the Name of the Rose.

Thats it for me.

Another movie that hits the time and place is "The Last Valley" with Michael Caine. Maybe not the best movie but it gets some good hits on setting.

Brothers Grimm. Although a comedy, it does have some great stuff about rural living and superstitious townsfolk. In that vein...Legend of Sleepy Hollow, and the ones mentioned above. Even the Village up until the point it gets Shamalyan lame could fit the superstitious townsfolk bit as well.

Also, Ravenous. Not set in the right period, but does work well on the 'grit' and 'dark' level. Could be an interesting scenario in and of itself...border guard, beset by an 'invisible' killer...

In case anyone is itching to game Solomon Kane there is a SK RPG out using the Savage Worlds rules, pretty slick, BTW.

Kane is actually a Robert E. Howard character originally, thats the same guy that wrote Conan. But the setting rocks. On a different note, he was good friends with H.P. Lovecraft, his chutulu is awesome.

okay it's not a movie but it always just cried out WARHAMMER to me.

Gormenghast

the BBC adaptation, just got me tingly about the characters, the castle, the skullduggery with a healthy amount of weirdness.

I endorse this one as well. It captures the setting as good as any movie out there. Good for a viewing, if somewhat hard to find.

Ohhhh yeah.

Good one.

If you can get it try the Finnish movie "Sauna" (published as "Filth" to my knowledge). It's somewhat bizarre horror and the setting is truly Warhammerish.

LOL... nice.

I would say From Hell, Sleepy Hollow, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Brotherhood of the Wolf.

Most straight up fantasy movies (books as well) don't quite jibe with the grim and dark setting of WFRP, though the new edition does have a bit more heroic feel to it and plays more to an apocalyptic feel.... so LotR could work, too.

Sorry for the outrageous thread necromancy, but I remembered this thread and figured raising it from the dead was better than having the same conversation again.

However, my reason...

...I've watched 'Black Death' today and it has really rung the WFRP bell for me - witch hunters, corruption, questionable morality, blasphemous rituals, necromancy, disease, brutal combat, it's even got a random combat in a journey through a forest!

Also, I can't believe none of us mentioned 'The Name of the Rose' last year.

New Nicholas Cage movie called 'Season of the Witch' might be applicable too.

Course, not seen it yet, it could be wildly inappropriate :)

Well, I didn't mind Gone in 60 Seconds, or those National Treasures... Um, Con Air was good too.

However, what about Kick-Ass??? That was awesome, and he played a great character too!

It's sometimes extremly hard to see if an actor is a bad actor, or just directed poorly.

One thing though is for sure, if an actor takes on the job to do a new version of an old popular film, or portraying a figure from a book, and it's a poor director, the actor will certainly get 90% of the blame.

I think Wickerman was a poor film, in both versions. I'm no Cage fan, but not a hater either. Think he does a fine job, and certainly a much better actor than many actors who gets praised high heavens (Hale Berry... for christ sake...).

I think he was good in Weatherman, and Lord of War, and think he's best in certain roles, mainly as someone slightly removed from how normal people live/think. Don't think he does well as typical hero, he just doesn't have the hero look, not in his face, or in his eyes. Saw Next the other day, and think he was perfect in the role, he walked through a whole film looking like life had no meaning to him, not evil, not good, just indifferent.

Totally deranged from topic though... Name of the Rose, Brotherhood of the Wolf, Pans Labyrinth (some truely chaotic stuff there...). Many others. I for one wasn't very fond of Solomon Kane, it was just to much, never liked stories where it's basically one man/woman that does all the work (Conan and such).

But I don't think the movie needs to be set in Dark Age setting to set a mood. Many WW movies has that sense of people being desperate, hopeless, etc... that is great to depict how humans act when everything seems lost, or how selfish they can be to make their place in history, like in Iron Cross.

You guys need to check out an old Terry Gilliam move called Jabberwocky.
