So, this happened... https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/news/2016/9/9/a-new-path-forward/
GW licenses expired; not renewed
Makes a lot of sense really. We've been feeling this since OW.
Just seems to me they are investing more heavily into the cash cow that is Star Wars and their new pick up of L5R. Although I don't know how well that sells.
Does anyone know if the GW-licensed products listed in the upcoming games under the "awaiting reprint" banner i.e. The Horned Rat expansion and other RPG titles will indeed be reprinted?
A sad day. I was really looking forward to more material for WQ:TCG....
I'm having trouble seeing how this makes sense to GW from a business perspective. I know there was some bad blood with FFG sort of violating the terms with their SW minis games that they reclassified as board games, but the GW IP boardgames seemed to do okay. Conquest looked like it was fairly popular at Gencon. Is this GW angrily taking their ball and going home? Do they have another partner in mind for churning out non-minis products? How does this make sense for them financially?

Am I misinterpreting it?
I thought it was on FFG to keep hold of the license.
GW making financial sense
good one cps
I was talking to someone in the know, and they said that FF wanted to do supplemental plastic pieces for Warhammer and 40k and GW insulted them and told them to F off. At which point FF decided to make a fantasy miniature game.

The fact that so many games ended abruptly leads me to think that it wasn't something FFG planned to do. Perhaps they took it into consideration that it might end, but I don't think they planned to end it themselves in the long run.
It takes far more resources to build an entirely new game than to expand on games that were already created.
- Forbidden Stars? Ripe for expansion, didn't get it.
- Warhammer Quest: The Adventure Card Game? Ripe for expansion, didn't get it.
- Conquest? We've had only a few cycles, could have been expanded a lot more. Didn't get it.
And these are all games known to have been received/selling well.

I mean to be fair how did FFG thing that'd ever fly.
Like ever with GW.
I mean if there was like an official GW licences FFG WH40KRPG miniature line, sure. But not them making their own.
I used to work for Dark Horse Comics in the late 1990s, and saw first-hand how completely a company can be seduced by the steady income from a Star Wars license, to the point of letting almost everything else decline.

Star Wars leads to money.
Money leads to greed.
Greed leads to resource adjustment.
Resource adjustment leads to Money.
Profit?
I wonder if we're even allowed to keep our Warhammer Fantasy/Warhammer40k avatars on this forum after the license expires... hehe.

Admittedly I have no source for this but I was under the impression it was GW who pulled the license, not FFG who opted not to renew. Anyone have ideas one way or the other?

Oh man, I wonder if they pull those profile pics and you guys have to change your avatar if you'll all get the cloudserver bug locking you out of the community page for like 4 hours.
It'd be a deadlock, you'd have to keep trying to change and you'd never get the change through.
Might get FFG to fix the issue though.

Probably quite well; Star Wars merch has always been huge, and with the new movies coming out ...
I sincerely hope they're also going to do a L5R RPG and not just hog the license for the card game, though.

In addition to what Adeptus-B said, GW also announced last year that they wanted to reboot their Specialist Games division, including a lot of their old games.
If this includes their own d100 game "Inquisitor", I can see why they'd want to shut the competition down, even if it's a direct licensee.

Wonder if that revival would kick start Dan Abnett into finishing the Eisenhorn vs Ravenor trilogy.
Thank god cthulhu is in the public domain... (Nobody takin' away my avatar.)
Still it's a big chunk of games FFG no longer gets to make. I wonder what they will replace them with. (yeah L5R I know) Maybe we'll get some mechwarrior games now?
I just hope that if they can keep selling until Feb they open up PDF sales on DriveThru again. I know I'd take advantage and could add up to a nice parting gift for FFG...
Probably not gonna happen, but would be nice for all parties.

Seriously, what's up with that?!

Last I heard they had him working on a few Hours Heresy novels and he wanted to finish up Gaunt's Ghosts stuff before he got back to it since GW had been moving away from Inquisitor stuff or something.
It's been a bit since I've looked into it.

Funny that you mentioned this... I had this cloudserver bug happening shortly after you posted your message.
Hax.
What causes it anyway? I know I was browsing through the avatar lists and then it struck, so I guess it had something to do with that.

Don't know, told FFG and they said they were "looking into it."
I can imagine that FFG bringing a miniature based competitor to market has a lot to do with GW not renewing the license. What makes it even easier is how FFG has been cranking out Star Wars licensed stuff and letting the GW license stagnate on all but a few games like Conquest. I'm sad to see the relationship end, but I'm sure GW will get their products to market with a vendor they don't see as direct competition.
Not 100% certain this is the reason, but it makes sense.
GW doesn't always make the best decisions for their IP so only time will tell if this comes back to bite them.
Edited by LeBlanc13Thing is, will the part of the Forum discussing the FFGs Warhammer products still be kept or thrown away?
