Running an Epic tournament during store hours?

By Klutz, in X-Wing

I'm curious to know how people who organize Epic tournaments go about it.

Considering a store's typical weekend hours of 9 to 6, even with rounds of 150 min and only 15 min breaks between games, you can't fit more than 3 games - the math just doesn't work out.

How are epic tournaments in your area run?

Do they keep the store open until midnight?

Do they run it as a 2 day event?

Do they run "semi-epic" at 150 or 200 points, with shorter rounds?

I'll tell you that GenCon's tournament was supposed to be three rounds, but we started late, and only got two rounds in. I can't think of any other way to do it. The time limit, unfortunately, will play a role in the types of squads you see because if you can wipe the opponent's ships before time runs out you'll be way ahead on MOV. It might be better to run it as a an Epic League at game night on subsequent weeks.

Unless you do a competitive league night for a few weeks... It just takes so long per game otherwise that two rounds is likely it. Three if you really push very hard. VERY hard.

I think the Armada rule of not having more than three rounds per day should also apply to Epic.

All the FLGS's in our area stay open 'til midnight on Friday and Saturday. Is that not a thing elsewhere?

I ran a 150 pt per player team epic tourney. Two hour rounds, had three rounds. Went well.

yeah that weird, in my area FNM keeps ever store open till midnight. One store drafts till 2 or 3 depending on participation.

I was in a three 150-minute round tourney this past weekend. I was in the store from about 11:30 in the morning until almost 11 that night. Although we were supposed to start at noon and ended up not kicking off until a little after 1:00. They maybe could have been a little more efficient between rounds, but I don't feel like it was poorly run in the slightest. You're just dealing with 150 minute games (and 18 players on top of that).
