Playing Jawa

By lecudas, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I am SURE this has been posted before, but I have compiled information and made a nifty PDF for those wishing to play a Jawa. My son insisted on playing one, so I made this for him. It will take one heck of a background story and a lot of good role-playing to play a Jawa, but it has added a lot to our group!

It was probably still uploading. Try it now.

At first sight, I thought your base stats were a little too strong, but it might be OK after all.

Comparing your base stats with those from Chadra-Fan.

Chadra-Fan : 1/3/3/2/1/2 ; 9+Brawn ; 11+Will ; 90 xp ; Silhouette 0, 1 Free rank in Mechanics skill ; remove 2 setback to Perception.

Your Jawa : 1/2/2/3/2/2 ; 9+Brawn ; 10+Will ; 100xp ; Silhouette 0, 1 Free rank in Mechanics skill ; remove 1 setback from Arid or hot environment conditions ; 1 free rank in Utini! talent.

Overall, you trade 1 Strain for 1 Rank in Utini!

So I think it's all good :)

Looks pretty good to me. I would allow it at my table.

Your document is very well done, too.

Thanks... Just entered in to the whole FFG Star Wars RPG world, by the way. I haven't GM'd for almost 15 years! Love it! It's just like getting back on a bike.

Jawa's just a chandra fan in a concealing robe anyway.

Shhhhhhh!!!

Beautiful character sheet. Best Jawa stat-job I've seen so far. Kudos.

The only thing I'd change -- and this is more preference than anything else -- would be to reduce the Wound threshold by 1 (they're resistant to the desert but aren't that physically robust -- just a factor of their size) and to give them a free rank in Survival . While the Mechanics rank does make sense, their skill is predominantly as "scavengers", rather than "mechanics", strictly speaking. They made their living and developed their traditions long before ships were crashing into the sands -- that meant not just metal-work, but making use of the refuse of a variety of sources, organic and inorganic alike. I see them as being defined by their adaptability, rather than their mechanical aptitude.

So, basically: 8+ Wound threshold, free rank in both Survival and Mechanics.

Your PDF lured me from my self-imposed exile from message boards. One of the best independently-produced character resources I've seen. Although you're new here, I think you'll do quite well for yourself! Congratulations on having games with your son, too.

I understand your rationale, and am inclined to agree with your assessment of Survival. Do they still get Utinni!, and Silhouette 0, or are those awash with the reset to WT and Survival add-ons?

Definitely Sil 0. I'm agnostic about Utinni! It'd kind of be a travesty to NOT give a Jawa the talent that is named after their speech, though! ;)

I realize that this is a pretty loaded-to-bear species, but 8+ Wounds is pretty much the lowest available in the game -- I think only the Drall have one as low. Maybe reduce starting XP by 5 to compensate?

I would most likely allow it.

Considering Utinni!, I agree it fits thematically for Jawas, if ever any character.

"Remove 1 Setback die per rank of Utinni! from checks to find or scavenge items or gear. Such checks take half the time."

With this explicit direction, I could easily see a drop in WT with all Characteristic crunch valid. Cunning feeds Survival, anyway, without forcing a typically strong Survival (As is, Jawas would start with 1P and 2A dice for Survival. Reading Savage Spirits' rules for expanded Survival skill checks, I'm inclined to lessen a dependency or munchkin (pun intended) abuse of that skill.

Arid Conditions? Yup.

Utinni! 1? Yup.

Silhouette 0? Yup?

Mechanics? I'm not 100% sold on its use, although I see this in play a lot from cinema. I feel Utinni! replaces the Survival skill rank intended to reflect their savaging ways. I suggest keeping it, though, because it also exists on OggDude's Character Generator using the Unofficial Species Menagerie.

This gives us a scavenging species who can survive (and hide?) in the desert. Any scraps found may aid in mechanical builds or modifications. Under duress, I would offer Forager 1 to replace Mechanics, but YMMV.

Overall, I'm 95% satisfied with this PDF as-is, and think we may nitpick a great idea to death. My only complaint would be to remove Jabba the Hutt's name and insert generic "Hutt clans on Tatooine" to be more open minded about Jawas' servitude and utility in non-Jabba games/timelines.

I could envision emailing this PDF (with permission?) to possible players to get an idea of different species, or to spotlight a Jawa party of PCs. With its excellent print quality, I would pay to have this printed professionally and hang in my FLGS to recruit possible players. Jawas are iconic, and non-threatening/fearsome species that may attract kids, like the OP did.

Jawa Hermit...

I'll just leave this here while I consider suitable bonded animals while it rides a Dewback or Ronto...

Thanks for all your input (and compliments)! :)

I want to make a Jawa BH now with ranks in Gadgeteer and Survivalist.

I find this news interesting: we only have three CRB arid/hot environmental conditions species...

Arcona (Willpower)
Red Niktos (Brawn)
Twi’lek (Presence)
This is literally half the number of available aquatic species, and almost on-par with dark/low-light conditions.
Therefore, I'm quite inclined to allow Jawas (Cunning) at my gaming table. Even if FFG announced a Tatoonie Sector Sourcebook today , it won't be here until 2017+.
This will be a lot of time to playtest it. I hope FFG takes notice of our impatience for new (EotE) material. Stuff like this Jawa PDF makes me far less inclined to buy a future book whenever it finally hits shelves that duplicates what I envision as a final draft of the species. As far as I'm concerned, this Jawa fills a nice gap and I can Utinni! what else I need from Lords of Nal Hutta.
Of course, I can always pull from the Unofficial Species Menagerie and use OggDude's Character Generator, but two pages of paper is far easier to disseminate than shoulder-read over a laptop.

An Utinni! Chart that suggests how to spend Advantages, Threats, Triumphs and Despair would put this PDF over the top, adding (maybe) half a page.

That is such a BRILLIANT idea! Tell me what you have in mind, with some examples - and we will see what we can (collectively) come up with. I'll make it page 3 of the PDF.

As a reminder, this is what the Core Rules say:

Utinni!

Activation: Passive
Ranked: Yes
Trees: Outlaw Tech
The character removes ■ equal to the character's ranks in Utinni! from checks made to find or scavenge items or gear. These checks could include Negotiation, Perception, or other checks, depending on circumstances and the GM’s discretion. Such skill checks take half their normal time (this does not decrease with multiple ranks of Utinni!).

Couple of ideas...

"Melt It Down" -- On a roll with no Successes, spend 2 Advantage to identify/find valuable parts of items that can be sold for raw material cost.

"What Are You Trying To Push On Us?" -- On a roll with 3 Threat, identify/find/sell a scavenged item that looks to be functional and will work for brief periods (and can be sold as such), but which will inevitably (and quickly) fail.

Edited by GreyMatter

"Bad Case of Dust Contamination" -- On a roll with 1 Threat, identify/find an item that is basically functional, but which is covered or coated with some kind of environmental effect, such that it is temporarily non-functional (dust, sand, mud, ice, etc.). A thorough cleaning is needed to bring it up to functional capacity.

Nice! So we have:

  • Success + 3 Threat
  • Success + 1 Threat
  • Failure + 2 Advantage

We still need, let's see...

  • Success
  • Success + 1 Advantage
  • Success + 2 Advantage
  • Success + 3 Advantage
  • Success + Triumph
  • Success + 2 Threat
  • Success + Despair
  • Failure
  • Failure + 1 Advantage
  • Failure + 3 Advantage
  • Failure + Triumph
  • Failure + 1 Threat
  • Failure + 2 Threat
  • Failure + 3 Threat
  • Failure + Despair

"You did WHAT!?" -- On a roll with [Despair], the scavenger activates something disastrous, such as a loud alarm, an explosive device, a self destruct sequence or an old (and very moody) security droid.

Question about Mechanics- is this the default go-to for Silhouette 0 species? Even looking at the Unofficial Species Menagerie and confirmed FFG products, IS Mechanics the right skill? After some reading and reflection, I'm inclined to offer Negotiation as their skill as traders. They find stuff (Utinni!) and sell it (Negotiation). IIRC, I never saw Jawas do much to build or repair droids beyond band-aid polishing in order to sell droids/gear. I think Chewbacca spent more screen time repairing droids.

To really mix up this species, what about skipping the skill rank and offering Nobody's Fool?

Nobody's Fool: May upgrade difficulty of incoming Charm, Coercion, or Deception checks once per rank of Nobody’s Fool.
