Miscellaneous Force Abilities

By TheTeaMustFlow, in Star Wars: Force and Destiny RPG

While reading up on the Force rules for my PbP character and entertaining vague plans of running my own game at some point, I've noticed that a few miscellaneous Force abilities don't seem to be adequately covered by the rules, such as:

Sensing Disturbances in the Force.

Sensing the Presence of nearby Force Users

Telepathic Communication

I was wondering if I had missed something obvious, or if not, how people think they should be run and how they've run them in their own games.

The first one is more of a story-telling element than a usable power, really. What is the player going to do, roll to generate a disturbance in the Force? That's more of a GM thing: "Everybody roll Vigilance/Perception/Knowledge (Lore) to detect a disturbance in the Force."

Alternatively Foresee, but that's YMMV.

The second could easily be Sense. I think the mephite crystal and the Shroud talent both get into sensing powers and other Force users, so it's something that exists for it to have items and talents about it.

The last doesn't have anything yet. I actually made both a Telepath spec tree and a Telepathy power, but it doesn't exist as such yet.

Are there instances of Jedi in canon using Telepathy that aren't dead?

Luke at the end of Empire Strikes Back.

And what does them being dead have to do with anything?

When he's hanging out on the antenna on Cloud City? Is that really telepathy? I feel like that's more just.. he just kind of... pinged her, sent out his force signature. Even just compelling her to come back via Influence. Not like dead-Ben speaks in sentences to him (p.s. that is what being dead has to do with it).

Luke and vader had a conversation as well.

I'll take your word for it, just didn't seem like "classical" telepathy was much of a thing off the top of my head.

First one is pretty much plot-device, and largely called out as such in a sidebar in the rulebook near the Foresee power. Personally, I'd just say that any PC with a Force Rating and the Sense power can pick up on those "great disturbances in the Force" without needing any sort of roll. Luke probably didn't because he was still learning the Sense power during the trip to Alderaan.

Second one isn't covered in the rules, but a few GMs (myself included) allow the PC to use the Sense power as per detecting living beings, but the only thing they can detect is other Force users (i.e. living beings with a Force Rating of 1 or higher), and that this can be resisted by those other Force users.

Third one has nothing official, so it's pretty much a plot device, especially as the only time we see it happening in the films is between blood relatives of a rather powerful bloodline. So could be that telepathy isn't something that's even possible for most Force users. Though if we do get an official power, my guess would be the Consular sourcebook, with Mystic being the runner-up.
