I'm loving Skilled First Officer

I like MC30T's. I like them a lot. So recently I've been running various rebel strike-fast-strike-hard lists built around maximizing the potential of a pair of them, and one thing I run into a lot with these lists is trying to predict correctly that one turn where they want the CF dial. I get it right more often than not, but tend to play it conservatively, so if there's any doubt, I stick with the nav. This results in missing, oh, 40% of the turns that I'd really like to have CF for.

Enter SFO. The only two commands you ever want on MC30T's are nav and CF, so this guy turns that ship into a better than command 1 ship.

Let me explain. At the beginning of the turn I think I might want to CF, I just dial it in on the bottom and wait. If something transpires during the turn that delays my shot till next turn (the ISD slams on the brakes, the AF2 jukes just out of range)... meh, I've got the nav to get me in position for the shot. If not, I SFO the nav away and look! concentrate fire!

Say I'm forced to nav the turn I set the CF dial, and the unthinkable happens: I can't position for a shot next turn. Good thing I can dial in a nav for the following turn and burn off that useless CF!

The other cool thing is, the turn after you pop SFO, you get to do it again. You have two burned dials, which means you're setting the dial for both this turn and next turn.

And all for one point.

This guy is amazing. I dropped Lando off of my MC30 for him.

Has anybody else been using him effectively?

I think two dial ships with two preferred commands is the definite sweet spot for this upgrade. I only played one game with him on a ship, and didn't abuse him quite this bad, because initially I had him on a gladiator as purely slicer insurance, but then he got used when I didn't even get sliced.

After the game I immediately wondered how incredible it would be to run an ISD-1 with relentless and SFO... Having an ISD you can switch to command 1 at a critical moment seems like it would be a hoot

I've tried him on a carrier as slicer-tool prevention. But I can definitely see him on Mc30s, who are absolutely awesome ships. Its really hard to play everything, there are just so many good options!

Yeah, the Relentless synergy was what got me thinking about using it like this in the first place. Definitely a place for it there if the officer slot's available. Four points for a command 1 ISD? Yuuuuup.

I have been using them on MC30Ts and Libs. For libs it helps against slicers and also lets you be more flexible between engineerings and navigates.

Looks neat, too bad he's in an expansion I probably won't buy:(

I can do better things with my officer slot, frankly. Neat ability, right price, wrong upgrade type.

cheap for when you cant put intel officers on everything.

i use it for all my large ships when i cant get intel

I can absolutely see a place for them in ships like a GSD or an MC30, and I love using them in an ISD, especially Relentless. The reasoning is the same (though often with ISD's, they're ISD-I's and I've got a squadron command with flight controllers queued up). I'll admit, it didn't occur to me that the double burn would give you 2 dials to set up in the following turn, but you're absolutely right. That is pretty great and I agree with Broba, Com2 seems to be the sweet spot for this one.

while I really like SFO, it's actually been losing out to something for a hefty 100% increase in cost! Chart Officer :P I've had really good luck with that one as it's caught a lot of my opponent's off-guard recently, but I imagine that trick will wear off soon enough and SFO will get some more face time as the skill level of my opponents utilizing slicer flotillas increases.

It would definitely be costed higher if it was in a less contested slot.

Likely. The officer slot is probably the most valuable slot.

Y'all are talking about Willian T. Riker; correct? When I get that card, I'm going to draw in the rest of his beard haha.
