App questions, new to the app

By wtfboar, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Playing the app, I have noticed, even though I have added my collections to the app. It is adding the monster but only using tiles from the base game so far. Is that correct?

In the tutorial the app brings up open monster groups but doesn't talk about required monster. Since the app is automating the OL for us. Does it still have required groups and open groups? And is there any way for us the players to see that pre-quest like we use to in the original state? Or are the monster selection now hidden like the unexplored map?

Finally a strategy question. When you guys play, do you try to stretch out the main quest as long as possible by doing side quest and staying in town? I dont see a disadvantage to this so far as it allows you to collect more fame and items by waiting as long as possible. I would like to hear your thoughts.

May your enemies be dead and your loot be shinny

There is a subforum dedicated to all questions about Road to Legend. So please ask those questions there so this forum doesn't get spammed to oblivion:p

But to answer your questions

1) It adds the tiles from expansions, usually through sidequests or other random generated stuff

2) The app decides the monsters that are going to be in play, there are no such things as open groups in the app. Perhaps you mean 'randomized' instead? Because many quests have 'fixed' monsters (boss Ettins) and other monsters that are randomly chosen.

3) There is no way to 'pre-view' the quests like the original game.

I don't really play the app so I wouldn't know about strategies. Once again, I refer you to the subforum where people who are actually playing it are more frequent:)

It definitely uses "open groups". The tutorial quest says it picks open groups randomly. But it doesn't tell you what groups are open. Any H&M packs would obviously be open. Im guessing anything that isn't core set is in the open group random part of the campaign generator.

Thats cool if you have gotten it to use tiles for expansion. So far I have played 5 games, 3 side quest and none of them have used any of the expansion tiles. I guess just unlucky.

Thanks for the information on the sub forum

For your question, you need to replay the wuests to see which groups are randomized and which aren't.

Also, read the "Added Content" section of the collection, for each item. That is where you find the quests that you want to pick if you are interested in using expansion content in particular

The expansion tiles would only be used in the expansion specific side quests.

If you haven't played those side quests, then you would not have used those tiles.

The story quests use only the tiles from the base game because that may be all that some players have.

To see which quests are added by which content, you can look in the app, in the collection manager.

First, welcome back, I saw your post that you are re-joining the comunity. As Ceasarsalad101 said, there is a special subforum for the App discussions. Now, for your questions:

1) It is adding the monster but only using tiles from the base game so far. Is that correct?

As many have said, the only way to use expansion tiles is by playing the side quests.

2) Does it still have required groups and open groups?

Yes, the App still uses the same idea of defined groups and open groups as in a traditional game. Moreover, this open groups are picked by their traits (as in the traditional format). For example, just the two intro open groups are Cave and Civilized. Another thing is, as Ceasarsalad101 also said, "Unique Monsters" are also picked by their traits but also for their size (huge, large, etc).

2) Is there any way for us the players to see that pre-quest like we use to in the original state?

Previous to play it, no, there isn't. The only way to know about the quest is by playing it.

3) Are the monster selection now hidden like the unexplored map?

Yes, you cannot know what is going to happen until you replay it for a couple of times, after that, it can get repetitive if you don't have any expansion.

4) When you guys play, do you try to stretch out the main quest as long as possible by doing side quest and staying in town? I dont see a disadvantage to this so far as it allows you to collect more fame and items by waiting as long as possible. I would like to hear your thoughts.

I quite don't understand this question, could you elaborate more. If what you are saying is to stay inside Quest the longer possible, then I assume you are playing in normal mode. There's no much time in hard mode in order to prolong the time inside the Quest. Fame is set by winning quest and a couple of events, while Items are only set by the Search tokens. I have played several campaings in hard mode and it is hard (at least for me, you could be better at playing than me) to get all the items in the quest and still finish it before Major Perils appear.

Now, if what you are saying is to do a Side Quest after another Side Quest, then yes, it is better. Actually, if you can do a Main Quest and then 3 Side Quests without risking your morale, then it is better than doing just a Main Quest ->Town- Side Quest -> Town -> Main Quest. The only problem of doing Side Quest's in a row is that you won't be able to refresh your Morale and you won't be able to buy items, aside from that, there's no other dissavantage...although, it is hard to do this without upgrading your items.

I hope I helped, and again, welcome back :D

We played 'the siege of Theyls' last night (the interlude) and I was shocked it wanted tile 53 out of shadows of neckenhall. I have no idea why not do I remember having used this tile ever before in any play throughs. Anyone else had this

It is funny that you mention this. It is a bug. It hasn't been reported and it hasn't been noticed because it doesn't affect the gameplay much.

I said it is funny because it is a bug that was even announced in the " News of RtL's release ". I posted my opinion about it long time ago, however, by then I assumed it was some sort of ramdom tile selection. Now, I can confirm it is a bug .

It doesn't appear on the list of tiles required to play (the ones the app asks you to set aside at the beginning of the gameplay) and when you open the door it isn't mentioned. Nevertheless, it doesn't affect at all, you could change the tile for an "Ending Tile" and still be ok.

That is basically what I was asking. We finished the first quest. Played a side quest. Now we have two weeks left and 1 moral remaining in a 4 player game. At first I was thinking we should do a second side quest/town/main. But know maybe we should go to town first incase we don't get good upgrades, we can then rest a week and see what pops up. But then we run the risk of a side quest leaving us low on moral before we do the main quest. I am looking for the communities opinion on the strategy or how much side quests should you do verse going to town and trying to gain items. I hope that clears it up.

First, going to town is the only way to refresh your Morale, other than random travel events, that may or may not add Morale to your party.

Second, going to town uses up a week, so going to town before having done the 2 side quests available will mean you will be unable to do one of those side quests. you can spend an extra week in town training to gain 1 XP (for 50 gold per hero) instead.

So in conclusion: going to town early can be good, if you have gold, as you might get good items, and you could train; or you could do the next quests and gain more gold, but risk losing because of low morale.

We ended up going to town and gain an experience for the two weeks over completing the second side quest. We decided spending two weeks at town would give us a better chance of gaining power for the next quest over gaining some more gold and fame. We will let you know how the next quest goes
