Cluster Missiles numbers

By Admiral Deathrain, in X-Wing

With GC only working on one attack, are Cluster Missiles worse, better or the roughly same as Concussion Missiles assuming you have 2 Focus tokens to modify the attack?

Largely depends on the situation.

Clusters work in range1, so theres no denial of ordnance except for arcdodging entirely. So in a sense theyre better for that alone.

However, theyre also worse because high agi can get lucky and dodge everything. Flipside, could also burn all their tokens too.

Clusters will never have a definitive "its better" tag, but theres a lot of situations where they are better and are worse.

Clusters used to have a situation were they were certainly better:

Pre-nerf FCS Redline.

Against a 2-agi target with focus:

Conc + GC + Focus = 2.7 dmg

CM + GC + 2 Focus = 3.1 dmg

Against a 3-agi target with focus:

Conc + GC + Focus = 2.1 dmg

CM + GC + 2 Focus = 2.1 dmg

Clusters used to have a situation were they were certainly better:

Pre-nerf FCS Redline.

The timing chart really hurt Redline. But isn't he still decent? Use the Guidance Chip for one attack and the extra Target Lock for the other. Then get new Target Locks for the next turn.

But, I preferred Redline better before.

Against a 2-agi target with focus:

Conc + GC + Focus = 2.7 dmg

CM + GC + 2 Focus = 3.1 dmg

Against a 3-agi target with focus:

Conc + GC + Focus = 2.1 dmg

CM + GC + 2 Focus = 2.1 dmg

Thanks, exactly what I was looking for. Thats pretty good for what I have in mind :D

Just curious, how would an Imperial get a second focus token?

Probably Fleet Officer.

Cool, thanks,

I was just at a local tournament this past weekend and was using N'Dru with Cluster Missiles and two focus tokens from Manaroo. Now my opponent said that I could only use one focus token for my Cluster Missile Attack on one of the two shots the Clusters fire. He said that this ruling came into effect with the latest faq. I didn't want to argue the point and thought he was probably right but this post makes me wonder...

Can I use both focus tokens on the Cluster Missiles attack or only one?

You can use both focus tokens. Spending focus is not a once per round ability- guidance chips is.

He was probably confused by the new Timing Chart in the latest FAQ.

You can't spend two of the same token during the same modification window (for example, you can't spend two Focus in one attack or two Evades in one defense roll).

However, because Cluster Missiles explicitly say "Perform this attack twice.", you get two modification windows and can use a Focus on each attack.

Also, abilities that activate after attacks like FCS only activate after both attacks from Clusters and TLT have been resolved.

You can use one focus token on each of the two rolls of red dice. Your opponent can use one focus and one evade token on each of the two rolls of green dice.

If you could have some way of firing without spending a TL, Redline could use one of his TLs on each roll of red dice too, but currently there's no way to do that for Imps.

The only things that are limited for Clusters/TLTs are things that happen when declaring a target, and 'after attacking/defending'.

Cool, thanks,

Can also go the Recon Specialist route and avoid the stress caused by Fleet Officer. But Fleet Officer can give a bonus focus to two different ships that don't have a crew slot so it's worth the stress sometimes. ;)

There's only one Imperial ship that can take both Crew and Torpedo and it's a 3-PWT so it rarely takes Torpedoes...

E: wait, Imp Firesprays do technically exist I suppose >.<

So Concussion Missiles were a better route before? And Cluster Missiles did not see much use?

Now with the Guidance Chips, Target Lock and a focus... That is going to be hard to do without a support shuttle or something else with crew near by.

Edit: Switching to Long Range Sensors you loose the Guidance Chip. I really wish Jendon could give out Target Locks greater than range 1. Bringing the Emperor on ST-321 with Colonel Jendon as pilot up close but still behind the squad could be interesting.

LOL, I wasn't even thinking about the torpedo part. Only how to get the second focus. Should have remembered what the original post was about.

Cool thanks! That's what I thought but I didn't want to argue with him at that time. Should have just called a judge over but sometimes I'm just too lazy and it wasn't an important tournament. Good to know how it works for the future though
