Total newbie need a shopping and a fleet list

By Vondodo, in Star Wars: Armada Fleet Builds

Hi everyone i have a group of friends really dedicated to tactical games.

We play Battle of westeros, memoires and many other so we stumbled on this.

We already noticed the core set is somehow lacking and i wonder what should i buy to get enough for a nice game without too much fleet building (we like more scenario i hope the coming expansion will take care of that).

BTW considering i have to move everything alone each time we play, what should i buy?

I'd like a lot to get:

-Imerial class star destroyer

-admiral ackbar MC80

-rogues and villains. (millenium falcon >.<)

(then a 1 pack of each squadron expansions maybe?... squadrons are the more annoying to move around)

Due to being iconic in the movies :)

but some people told me i'd better start with:

-gladiator

-assault frigate Mkii

So what should i get first?

And can i build 2 decent lists with them? (we play casual yet we are quite experienced in this sort of games)

Thank you a lot.

First you need a Core set which has "enough" to play a casual 200 point game. I would recommend getting for imperials an ISD, an interdictor and a gladiator. For the rebels mc30, mc80, and a liberty. This should give a nice mix of big ships to work with.

If you are buying a squadron pack and the R&V squadrons then adding an ISD and an MC80 home pack to the starter set is easily enough to get some decent playable fleets. They may not be perfectly tournament tuned but leave that a while and get stuck in playing full sized games.

Examples

397/400 Imperial Fleet.

Imperial II-class Star Destroyer (120 pts)
Darth Vader (36 pts)
Avenger (5 pts)
Gunnery Team (7 pts)
Boosted Comms (4 pts)
Electronic Counter Measures (7 pts)
Heavy Turbolaser Turrets (6 pts)
Leading Shots (4 pts)
Victory II-class Star Destroyer (85 pts)
Flight Controllers (6 pts)
Expanded Hangar Bay (5 pts)
Overload Pulse (8 pts)
Major Rhymer Tie Bomber Squadron (16 pts)
Tie Bomber Squadron (9 pts)
Tie Advanced Squadron (12 pts)
Sontir Fel Tie Interceptor Squadron (18 pts)
Tie Interceptor Squadron (11 pts)
Punishing One - Dengar (20 pts)
Firespray-31 (18 pts)

Rebels 394/400
MC80 Command Cruiser (106 pts)
General Dodonna (20 pts)
Defiance (5 pts)
Wing Commander (6 pts)
Boosted Comms (4 pts)
Electronic Counter Measures (7 pts)
Enhanced Armament (10 pts)
Nebulon-B Support Refit (51 pts)
Projection Experts (6 pts)
CR90 Corvette B (39 pts)
Tantive IV (3 pts)
SW-7 Ion Batteries (5 pts)
Jan Ors (19 pts)
3 X-Wing Squadron (39 pts)
Luke Skywalker X-Wing Squadron (20 pts)
2 B-Wing Squadron (28 pts)
Millennium Falcon - Han Solo (26 pts)
Advanced Gunnery, Fire Lanes, Dangerous Territory
I have tried to keep to the upgrades in the starter set, home one and ISD packs but may have made an error so you can substitute a few.
I found a nice discount during a boardgame event....
So i added to the core pack:
Empires
- imperial star destroyer
- Gladiator
Rebels
- Mc80 home
- MkII frigate
Squads
- Rebels
- Empire
- Rogues&villains
Since i play with friends i will try Mad cat build first (thank you a lot).
After that i tried to write a list using most movies stuff.
I don't need to be strong but balanced on the 2 fronts and not too OP or difficult to use.
Could this go? if not any suggestion would help to learn how to build

With the rebel list its best to put leia on a command 1 ship to feed commands to the mc80 to correct mistakes.

I would be inclined to take a cr90a instead of the nebulon cause of Ackbar, giving a perfect platform for Leia and freeing up points for a defence refit on the mc80. Advanced projectors or ecm depending on what you have.

With imps, make it a victory I and move boosted comms to that ship. Then the isd can concentrate on being a gunship.

Captain Needa has no place on a gladiator!

Turn one of those tie fighters into a tie bomber to feed ruthless strategist hull points.

Now go and play, and learn.

solid advice up there, but I just have to add that liason's really are just a point sink. They aren't thematically or competitively a good choice for your ships. It is better to free up those points for something a little more "Fun" than expensive command insurance with a high secondary cost.

All true, but its not disastrous to have em, especially for a new kid making mistakes.

Fixed according to your suggestions :) i put aggressors assault fighter instead of the bombers because they seemed better for the list i will also replace the liasons as we get better

I know you are building 2 fleets to play against each other. If you have a second ECM card the ISD could really use it especially when facing an MC80a Ackbar assisted volley.

According to wiki there is an extra copy in the MK II box so i should have 2.

Had to remove the card to recover shields...

I hope the 2 are balanced now i'd rather have the empire slightly less powerful (since i plan to use it and don t want friends to complain :) ).than the opposite.

Well.... i learnt fast why Ackbar + home one are so hated....

Don't get me wrong in the end Imperials did win....but only because ackbar and home one were so braindead that led rebel player to be overconfident and thought he could face half imperial list with only home one.

Infact he could, until imperials decided to crash their Victory one against the front of MC 80 while the ISD fired close range on the side with bobba fett and vader supporting.....

In the meantime the other side with a gladiator and 3 squadrons was keeping busy han solo, the MKII frigate, Luke and other squadrons long enough to get rid of the home one...this side was almost wiped out (Killing the CR90 at least) but gained time for ISD and Victory I so Ackbar could not repel a firepower of that magnitude.

Ackbar is indeed beatable.... but is totally unfun, i guess i will replace it despite being my fave SW character.

Any suggestion to make the rebel list a little less "braindead" while not making them too weak?
