Are PbP Eating Forums?

By Guest, in Star Wars: Force and Destiny RPG

As I've noticed with the short time I've been posting here Kael is right, most topics are over in EOTE because it's the game that started it all, they really are the same system save for character creation other than that they're so similar that keeping them all in a forum makes the most sense. I mean all parts of every book is compatible with the next from races to equipment, the way the forums are set up now people are confused already so change may help. I've seen 3 different topics start since July that were posted in all three due to confusion on how these forums work. Then we put every PBP in its separate rightful spot.

Well, not to mention that EotE forum is pretty much the catch-all for SW RPG question threads and mechanics discussion. I just went there and saw like a quarter of the threads were related to AoR or F&D

Edit: okay, so not really that many, but there are more than a few threads there you'd expect to see in the AoR forum or here in F&D

Yeah, the thread "Credits in an AoR game?" is in the EotE forums. -_-

To be honest ...... on some of the forums (I'm looking at you AoR) there really isn't much to talk about it seems other than the PbP.

I think there is plenty to talk about, just no one does it.

I feel like these rpg forums are dictated by the release of product, which is a ridiculous concept. Where are the threads about play sessions? Character ideas? Mind blowing twists your GMs have thrown at you? Incredible antagonists? Player's actions that upset you?

Pretty much the usual rpg things. I don't see much, if any, of that here, and that's a shame.

It's a far different environment than I've seen on other rpg forums. Makes it seem like this game doesn't have much to offer, which is nonsense.

In other words: the play by post deserves its own section, but YOU can make these forums what you want. Don't rely on FFG's release schedule to do it for you

I've participated in - and started - a number of "anecdote" threads. They never seem to last long...

I'm starting to think that the best way to do these type of threads is to have EotE, AoR, and F&D forums rolled into one. Distinguishing the difference isn't that big of a deal, and most folks I know who play these games mix all three anyways.

Any ideas as to why that is? With other rpgs those things can go on forever in some forums.

It seems we get a lot of rules questions and discussions, but a lot of the "regulars" can't hang around and get into discussions, or don't want to, but they can answer questions and inquiries. Every once in a while a discussion will drop, and there are a few recurring ones.

I remember a time where discussions where somewhat common, but they had a tendency to attract certain users who could get a thread locked, so that could be part of it...

As someone new to these forums that sucks to hear. Usually these environments are a lot more conducive for creative ideas. That's what I expected when I starting peering around here. The PbP doesn't surprise me (lack of a subforum for it does), but general jerkiness in a rpg forum does.

I get that kind of thing in forums for competitive games (I don't like it, but I "understand" it), but a roleplaying game?

Go on and take something someone loves, boil it down to rules, and then present it to the masses. Everyone will dislike something.

Anyway, as for where are the threads on the forum? A casual glance at Reddit will show even a unified forum is rather slow going.

FFG should have controls over their own website. To liken it to Reddit is comparing apples to oranges, although I do realize both are a mess. In one place, a fix is possible. On another site (Reddit), it is not under FFG's control.

It's Star Wars, so it means a lot to a lot of folks, but everyone has their one take away that varies from other folks, and it can create friction. It's far from acceptable, but even so.

To be honest ...... this forum is hands down better than when it was the Star Wars forum over at WotC.

To be honest, as a regular contributor... I'd be happy to see a separate board for the 'Let's Plays'. It's cool that you guys do that, I've even considered doing it myself, but it kinda chokes the Forums when there's so many of them and so little other news.

The Forums seem a bit of a mess right now. When the games were new, it might have helped having a separate board, but honestly we don't need ALL these separate forums now.

I think we need -

- one for the Core games generally - EoE, AoR, F&D

- one for the play-by-Forum games

- one for the Beginner Boxes and general newbie questions, like 'can I be a sith? and 'what the heck is Obligation?'

but general jerkiness in a rpg forum does.

To be honest, this is probably the least antagonistic forum I've ever been on.

Even my 'respected adversaries' are polite and we agree to disagree.

Robust arguments are fine, but pretty much everyone keeps a civil tone.

The veterans regularly welcome, and help, newcomers and ask them to stick around.

When my own sense of weird humour goes from 'playful' to 'snarky', I apologise.

In fact, since ErikB got the banhammer, I think the only unpleasantness has come from the odd newcomer coming in with a combative attitude. And that doesn't happen often.

It seems unlikely that anything will be changing around here regarding official rulings and changes.

Why not, I dunno, unofficially lay it all out in one thread in this forum and the Age of Rebellion one, too. Make a topic get it sticked to the top spot, and all it has to say is "Everyone is over here on the general Star Wars RPG board," with a link to the Edge board.

Newcomers can see that, and just follow the link.

May I suggest some action? We can pontificate how we'd like the board to look, but must realize that FFG holds all the dice on a decision.

BEFORE YOU REPLY TO THIS THREAD, MESSAGE FFG CUSTOMER SERVICE WITH A LINK TO THIS THREAD.

Otherwise, we spin our wheels with no traction. Then, at least, it's up to FFG to follow through on customer inquiries...

I will say the forums are not a good place to ask for these changes. The devs don't really come here. What should probably happen is for someone to send a note to customer support saying hey we in the forums would like to have our forums reorganized in a more logical manner. It is being discussed in this thread. Could you send a forum admin to look it over and perhaps shuffle things around a bit? Thanks.

It might be a good place to start and ask "how do we get subforums?" Some of the other RPG forums like Dark Heresy and Rogue Trader have 5+ subforums, including one that has a play by email subforum. Maybe you can start by asking if we can get a subforum for that. Even if it's all under the Edge of the Empire banner, it'll be a start.

I have a feeling it's company policy for them to have separate forums for each product line, so I don't think that will ever get changed.

Did you read my post just above yours?!?

nope. not till after I posted mine... so oops.

SOLUTION: Move the PbP into the Force Awakens Beginner Game or F&D Beginner Game forums. There are only a couple pages of topics in either and the last posts are almost a week old.

Wouldn't work. People wouldn't find them unless they specifically knew that they needed to look there for games.

Recruiting threads could be started in the expected places and the IC threads moved to the Beginner forums.

Yes but we would still be cluttering the forums with PbP games threads then.

Honestly though the PbP threads aren't that bad. The only forum that does any real game traffic is the EotE forum. Both the F&D and AoR forums have little in the way of game mechanics threads. Thus if you removed PbP threads those forums would look fairly dead.

When the first one began, we had contacted one of the webmaster's to create a subforum for PbP, but I don't recall ever getting a response.

You're right, I never did get a response. That was over a year ago now!

I think I may have kicked off the whole PbP mess on the FaD forums... sorry guys. I just wanted to run a couple games... :(

I really do love being on these forums; the excellent people, and the rich text editing capabilities (!), are keeping me here! Like Mae said several posts back, the general tone here is civil; dare I say even "friendly"...and that is rare in the gaming world. And also I didn't want to have to ask a bunch of people to make accounts over on another site. And finally, for all the utility of the dedicated PbP sites I've seen, they just don't have the right vibe. This place "has got it", as far as I'm concerned.

But I am with everyone else...I'd definitely appreciate a PbP sub-forum.
