Modern event at Black Moon, Leb NH Sat Sept 10th

By Hinomura, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

A year has passed since the sale of the Legend of the Five Rings brand to Fantasy Flight Games, and we are all eagerly awaiting the launch of the new L5R Living Card Game at GenCon 2017. Even as we look to the future though, we celebrate the amazingly deep and rich history of the game and gather once more to do battle on the fields of Rokugan.

On Saturday September 10th, Black Moon Games in Lebanon, NH will be hosting a Modern format tournament for the original Legend of the Five Rings CCG. Details on this format can be found at http://www.l5rmodern.com . Please note that this tournament will be 100% proxy-legal: you can use http://www.oracleofthevoid.com to print out decent quality proxies for use, so please, no hand-written proxies!

The entry fee will be $5, with all the money generated going into the prize pool as store credit. I'm sure we can also find a couple of extra L5R prizes to give away on the day! If you have any questions at all, please don't hesitate to ask!

We had a small Modern tournament at Black Moon Games in Lebanon, NH on Saturday, partly to mark the anniversary of the IP sale announcement, and partly because Modern is a really fun format and we still love playing L5R :)

Nine players gathered, so we played three rounds cutting to a top four. Standings after Swiss were as follows:

1st Mark Armitage (Phoenix ToP/Izuna) 3-0
2nd Devin Bell (Phoenix ToP/Izuna) 2-1
3rd Tonya Segee (Dragon WED/Hojatsu) 2-1
4th Tom Cadigan (Phoenix CoT)

5th Marie Collins (Crane Embassy) 2-1

6th Keith Barriere (Dragon LSC/Tamoko) 1-2
t-7th Gary Farr (Lion TMF/Satoru) 1-2
t-7th Geoff Prugh (Lion TMF/Satoru) 1-2
t-7th Alan Sarkisian (Scorpion LoDD/Shibata) 1-2

It's worth pointing out that the three Phoenix decks were very different, even though Devin and I ran the same Stronghold/Sensei combination - he was playing straight honour whereas I ran Inquisitor MDK.

This was Marie's first ever L5R tournament and she was unlucky to miss out on the cut on tiebreakers. For bubbling, she received a copy of Battle of Beiden Pass.

In the semi-finals, Tom completely smashed me, and Devin overcame Tonya. The all-Phoenix final was then won by Devin in a very tight game.

I'd like to thank everyone that came along for a great day's play, and Black Moon Games for their continued support and fantastic venue. Looking forward to doing this again some time in the future!
