So was there an Epic Tournament at Gencon? If so what was the results?

By Marinealver, in X-Wing

I think the announcements and early wave release buried any news about any X-wing Epic matches. Just trying to see if there is an Epic meta yet.

I have noticed that in the origins tournament (Held the national championship) also was another epic tournament but no have any list of that.

Someone knows something?

From the Gencon tournament I have a couple of list.

Origins had an Epic Tournament scheduled, but it was a late addition to event schedule and was run concurrent with Day 2 of the Standard X-Wing event. As such, it was sparsely attended and only had four players, as most people didn't know about it until Organized Play (OP) laid out the awesome prize support for it. There was only a single round played, as the event was pretty late in getting started since the players that participated discovered and signed up for the event right beforehand and had to come up with lists.. Still, it appeared to be a ton of fun, with pretty solid prize support from OP: a pack of 5x Acrylic Energy and the winner of each table getting an Acrylic Huge Ship maneuver tool. All four players also got an alt art Targeting Coordinator.

  • A Scum list (2x IG, 4x JM5000) beat an Imp list (Raider with Imp Aces)
  • A Rebel list (Rebel salad swarm) beat a Rebel list (Rebel Aces action-stacking)

The Gencon epic event was much better attended, though also was ran concurrent with Day 2 of Standard X-Wing. I unfortunately don't know anything about this event to help out, sorry.

At Gencon on Sunday there was also a Team Epic event that pitted teams against one another for a single round. Each player received an alt art Targeting Coordinator, the winning team of each table got 10x acrylic energy tokens, and OP did an awesome job giving out lots of other bonus prizes to each table. it was surprisingly well attended, with something like 26 teams in attendance. Not being scheduled during a day of standard X-Wing National Championships helped quite a bit, I think.

The moral of the story is that Organized Play is doing a fantastic job of supporting Epic events more and more, and I think as more people play the format more people fall in love with it. It's fast become my preferred format, as a lot of the things that have become stale and degenerative about Standard 100pt X-Wing Dogfight have a much less pronounced effect upon Epic.

  • Problematic combinations--like classic Fat Han or current Palp Aces or Dengaroo--which can be a very NPE nigh-invicinble list to face at 100pts are far less problematic in 300/400pts (you can ignore Dengar or Fel and still have a chance at winning in Epic, though in standard 100pt you pretty much have to kill Dengar or Fel to win, although it's also easier to overwhelm their defenses when you can bring half a squad of fighters to bear on them if you so choose).
  • A much wider array of ships and upgrades are decently viable at 300/400pts
  • It lets you put far more things from your beautiful collection onto the table
  • Maneuvering on a 3x6 with more ships feels much more like a Star Wars dogfight, as opposed to two or three ships repeatedly circling or K-Turning within a 3x3 fishbowl
  • Huge Ships and energy management are a lot of fun to fly as and against

If you and your local community have not tried Epic, I really encourage you to do a run a future event as a fun, inviting, Epic event. One of my local stores has moved to being the "Epic" store, where most of their future events are being run as Epic or Team Epic and they've been getting a lot of positive support from the players in the region.

Okay, so not a full on swiss tournament, more of a couple of exhibition matches, I get it.

so for 2nd it seems to be a support ship with lots of crit effects to disable capital ships.

as for 3rd seems like a short range anti fighter gunship.

and I'm guessing 4 IGs were declared the winner.

Thank you, AllWingsStandingBy. You were there?

Otherwise Where you dig to reach the info? ;)

Actually - I don't think 4 IGs got the win. One in the top 5 or 6... My Rebel transport and fighter wing beat it in the 'first round.' My opponent hoped to knock it out in joust but instead lost two aggressors and only crippled the transport. He annihilated a new X-wing player 'second round' to vastly improve his MOV which plays key in a 2 round event.

Yes, I was at Origins 2016 and Gencon 2016. This is information I gathered from watching/talking with folks there. As far as I know, these events have not been much discussed anywhere online.

First off, yes, exhibition matches is a great way to describe it. I was quite miffed that we only got to play two rounds at GenCon instead of three.

But there was a little bit more to my squad than the crits - it was actually just getting huge firepower at decent PS and an affordable price. Two dice + one for Opportunist + crit with Advanced Targeting Computer all with a Howlrunner reroll does murderous things to Huge ships, but is equally effective against small ships when Suppressor and Grand Moff Tarkin can strip tokens. And finally, Emperor Palpatine is plenty good in Epic - don't listen to the naysayers. I still worry a little that he may be too good, but I'm not worried enough to stop using him :)

P.S. I asked the Indiana X-wing community who first place at GenCon was. I'm bad with names, but I know he's a local guy because I played him at Store Championships this year. He has a jaw-droppingly gorgeous light-up Imperial Raider-class corvette. He deserved to win just for the model alone. All I can tell you about his squad was that he used his Raider. Still waiting for a response from the community about his squad.

Thanks

All info about epic is very welcome

I've still got a photo of the final placement sheet for epic... but names alone isn't going to help anybody...

I will say of 12 players:

6 were Imperial

3 were Rebel

3 were Scum

Of the top 6:

4 were Imperial

1 was Rebel (3rd place)

1 was Scum (5th place - this will be that 4 Brobot list I faced)

My list is the 3rd place one mentioned (Bradley Riley) - an actual Rebel list. Here is my 5 minute thought on the list but let me first say that there is NOT a meta for Epic because there is not enough games, discussion, and podcasts on it currently. Each tournament I have played I have had 2-3 people say they wish they were playing Epic. More swag might get more players so thank you FFG and I really loved the energy and movement templates. Just wish I had won more Energy tokens.....**** YOU DARTH-DAN...:) Would be nice to say any Regional Winners could get a placeholder for worlds. That would bring out folks.

As for GenCon, I was greatly disappointed that we didn't play 3 rounds. I actually enjoy Epic better than the 100 pts Dogfight and always looking to expand formats at my FLGS (Spy vs. Spy league, mods to Hunger Games, mods to Hanger Bay, Draft league - from Gold Squadron, etc).

I also am waiting for a Huge ship for Scum and then a requirement for at least 2 Epic point for an Single Epic Tournament and 5 points total for Team Epic. I can play many points but Epic feels only Epic when playing at least one Huge ship.

---Some quick thoughts----

I think the biggest danger to huge ships comes either into too many dice being thrown their way in one round OR Ions. If a huge ship becomes ionized, they will not be able to regen shields. This allows damage in further rounds to get through.

I have also learned that crit damage is devastating so LT Colzet might be a consideration that I have not yet encountered or tried. CRITS SUCK on Huge Ships.

So the biggest threat is the amount of dice thrown in one round, either ordnance or better yet a swarm.

------A hint / trick--------
I drew on a manilla folder the outline of a huge ship using an Engine Boost and each maneuver in order to get an visual idea where these things move. Along with the diagram I drew in small bases to help make sure i know where the other ships need to be, either safe or destroyed.

------The list--------

Now for the list. I see lot's of players setting up the huge ships on the edges and at an angle. Takes to long to get into a fight and really boring. I try to use one of the greatest strengths of the Huge ships and that is to smash the small and large ships. Destroying 3-4 ships usually pays off in a point to point cost and also can drastically change the game. So I set up near the middle facing straight at my opponent. With Engine Booster I am not worried about moving my side arcs and I can quickly get into the fight. Parakitor also mentioned this at GenCon.

I also built an Ordnance ship with one quad laser for range 1 so that I have energy efficiency. I end up using energy for Toryn Farr (thank goodness she is not large ship based), Shield Recovery, and that single energy for the Quad Laser.

So I slam into the fight fast, I change my angles to get out homing missiles, and pull tokens off of the opponents ships with Toryn Farr - SHE IS AMAZING. If you play the Transport, USE HER. I don't meant to emphasis by yelling but USE HER, SHE IS AWESOME. I have also felt she has paid her weight in gold on the Tantive IV also. If you are facing her, just be glad she is restricted in range.

Now with Rebels I will never go into Epic without Roark. He really pays dividends and I will never go into an fight playing the Raider without a PS8+ and Swarm Tactics (Howlrunner is best as 20 points is 1-2 killed ships at the beginning from a Raider and you get a reroll). The PS is important which is the weakness of my build. Those B-Wings die fast, especially against a Swarm Tactic Raider. The idea is to overwhelm with ION Torpedoes to control the other ships and to prevent regen on the Huge ship. They also have BR to get out of the way of large ships even though they have one of the crappiest dials (looking at you Jumpmasters...jerks).

In this particular build I am playing LT Blount with a tracer round so that my B and Y wings move up and take a focus, then they can the TL from LT Blount. Don't care if I waste Ion Torps for damage if need be, most will never get two off and if they do, they still have 3 ATK dice.

Well, I think I have given all my secrets away so I can never win another game again (I am a slightly below average player) but I hope that gives you some food for thought on some options.

---Other Thoughts----

Generic can be better than specialized pilots but have those synergistic guys helping out (example Jonus). Palpatine loses some of his critical capability because so many dice are being rolled, so cheap action economy is best.

Ordnance can be your friend.

Large ships can get messy.

When Huge ships are used on both sides, having a closer is nice. Consider Whisper but keep out of the scrum...bring them into the fight later as Epic is a longer game...you can hold her back.

Huge ships don't really get to modify their dice well, so I like ordnance with auto-mods better...hence why I use the expensive Homing Missile. Any 3-4 agility ship will most likely never take damage from a huge ship. Have a plan on how to deal with them. In my second game, a bump is what destroyed my opponent. With 8-10 shots I could not kill is Carnor Jax but I sure did run over him...a mistake in bumping

Which is....plan well on your moves. Bumping in front of huge ships is....bad.

Consider double Gozanti lists. Imperial is stronger (except Toryn Farr but you have Tarkin and other options)

Final thought. Have fun. Play what you like. Just play Huge Ships :)

Missed an option that could be considered.. During Team Epic, my best friend and I discovered that Rigged Cargo Chutes can cause a ship to have 3 stress and pointing the wrong direction. The two bombers closet to the Gozanti quickly recovered due to this was a support one with two Comms Boosters. Pulled all 3 stresses off and gave a focus which helped them on defense. Comms Booster is a spend energy so it does affect energy use but does not affect any actions.

The original ideas was setting up the list for TIE/D Ion Cannon using Rage. Even with two stresses the Gozanti pulled them off and gave a focus so they had 3 dice rerolls and a focus while ending with no stress.

Also with a Gozanti I believe the Dual Laser Turret with Optimized Generators is nearly an auto-include.

That sounds AWESOME! So not only does Comms remove stress, but it allows them to have focus for BOTH attacks (or attack and defense)? I have to try that!

Also with a Gozanti I believe the Dual Laser Turret with Optimized Generators is nearly an auto-include.

I like that you said "nearly" auto-include, considering my success with my unconventional squad. Dual Laser Turret really pulls its weight, except against Autothrusters carriers. Usually there's no reason not to gun down the Gozanti first, but if it has no weapon it gives your opponent some tough choices.

And although my squad has Automated Protocols, Optimized Generators is my favorite of the huge ship modifications, and is, in my opinion, the most powerful and versatile. So I agree with that, too.

I have also learned that crit damage is devastating so LT Colzet might be a consideration that I have not yet encountered or tried. CRITS SUCK on Huge Ships.

I've done this a friendly game - the one that got me banned from Imperials in friendly epic for a bit. Split my force so the Raider (ordnance) and Colzet went after the Corvette while my remaining fighters tied up his fighter group. I can say Colzet turned out to be insult after injury, causing additional crits even if his attacks totally failed to penetrate. Good tip.

So when the big ships come out it is the Imperials that rule! Thematic ;)

Oh no no no....Rebels rule!!! Even while overcosted and worse dials :)
