Played this at PAX West

By cclaybern, in Star Wars: Destiny

Hey everyone,

So I played this game this weekend at PAX West. My thoughts are:

- Game is a lot of fun. Highly encourage to give it a try.

- The dice give the game a different dynamic from other CCG.

- The game can swing in a hurry depending on your rolls.

- They feel nice. Solid make. Durable and will last.

- Starter decks didnt feel balanced. The Rey deck WAS better.

- I did win with Kylo, but only due to decking my opponent.

- Rey getting upgrade after upgrade turns the table quick.

- Lightsaber card and dice ends games quickly with starters.

Overall, a great experience. Plan on getting into the game at launch and hopefully growing my local scene. And yes, they did give out the GenCon promos there.

Thanks.

I'm mixed about that, I was hoping for new promos personally.

May I ask how many times you played?

I would have liked new set of promos also but I am not mad they used the same ones.

May I ask how many times you played?

3 times. Once as Rey, twice as Kylo

I agree the Rey deck is pretty much better. We've been playing with some bootleg mockups and the Rey deck is undefeated. 1 quick fix for people playing these against themselves once the starter decks are released might be; add 1 more First Order Stormtrooper and drop Kylo down to 1 dice. That would make the starting points more even (2 dice Rey 12 + Finn 13 = 25, VS 1 dice Kylo 10 + FO Stormtrooper 7 + FO Stormtrooper 7 = 24). It's weird that the two decks are a bit off points-wise. And then the enhancements in the LS deck just seem plain better.

I know there is precedence for starts to be horrifically imbalanced, so it's not a huge surprise.

The Armada and Imperial Assault starter boxes, for instance, are both examples of quite iffy balance when you use just the core contents.

But I think this is done so the the starters are more thematic than balanced , and meant to really only catch your eye so buy, give you one learn to play game, then get you out buying packs to make actual decks.

Bootlegs I've played, the ranged damage red brings is amazing! I won 5 in a row with Kylo and FO Trooper. Oh wait I forgot I upped the cards to 30, and played 2 FO Troopers and Kylo Elite versus Finn elite and Rey elite.

Yeah, I guess in either of our examples the extra FO Trooper probably just unbalances it the other way.

The points are much closer:

2 dice Rey 12 + 2 dice Finn 16 = 28

VS

2 dice Kylo 13 + FO Trooper 7 + FO Trooper 7 = 27

but the health is in DS favor (20 to 25).

I want to ask about the dice. How are they? Do they feel hollow? Are they heavy? They are obviously better than Dice Masters dice, but how much better? Thanks for the report, I am super ready to play in November!!

My first thought upon seeing the dice was "Ugh the look WAY too big." But then when I got to sit down and play and feel the dice I really liked them. They have a nice weight to them. Not super heavy but a nice weight. And they do not feel hollow. The larger size also helps to easily see what your opponent has rolled across the table. Really nice imo.
