I demoed this twice at Gencon once for each side. I was able to get both promo cards this way and thought that it would be really neat to have those and I was really interested in the game. The demo guys all talked up the game and how you could create all sorts of squads. The guy even said expansion pack or somthing similar when he talked about the other characters and dice you could get. If I had heard booster I would have known immediately since I have been down that rough road. It sounded like an interesting quick game for fun in the star wars universe. I had not heard of the game prior to gencon and as I watched at least 6 games plus the two I played I did not hear one mention that the game was a CCG. I am not sure it was even prominently displayed on the huge destiny sign. It prominently displayed the two starter packs and thats what I remember. I left thinking that this was a game that was like the other FFG game an LCG variant. I went and looked back at some pictures and all I saw was the "dice and card game" plastered prominently with the only mention that it was a CCG was from the picture of the BB-8 pack that said "booster" in much smaller lettering. I later learned it was a CCG and was pretty surprised. Why was that not voiced very frequently? Thats a huge downside to the game for tons of people. It feels now like FFG was trying to suck people in with those starter sets in the hopes that they would hook them on it. Sadly it was a fun game but I am not ready to throw my money down the giant bottomless pit that is a CCG. Been there and done that and never will again. I am not sure why this has been bothering me since Gencon was a while ago but I thought I should share it. Oh well, I guess I will sell those promo's to some sucker on eBay.
Edited by KnucklesamwichSo I played this at Gencon
I can understand why that would bother you Knuck. But in their defense, FFG has announced in their articles. In fact the very forum we're in is a sub forum of "Collectible Games" so they aren't exactly hiding it.
Me personally, I'll never play this competitively, but I could see myself getting the starter and picking up a couple booster packs at the store for the kids every now and then. Even if they don't like the game, a couple dice and some cards are nice for a few bucks. The LCG expansions are a little too cost prohibitive for that.
I am stealing this lol
If your beef is that it's a CCG, then fair enough, because it's all subjective.
But if your beef is that FFG have been sneaky about that, then.... well it's been all over their marketing and not really been hidden at all...
This was part of the announcement before even gencon. Was discussed during their in flight report. It's been all over. I really don't know how you missed it and that is unfortunate but that's on you not FFG.

I really think that with FFG making a big deal a while back about how CCG's were not the right model for their customers that they were trying hard not to make waves hoping that people would just forget that stance that they took.
Edited by KnucklesamwichOnce again this was not secret or kept under wraps. They very much pointed this stuff out.

Every announcement I've seen has made it very clear how the game is distributed. Short of them stopping you before you sat down to play and saying, "Hey, this is collectible by the way", I'm not sure what more were you expecting.
Every table at Gencon had a card list with rarities and such. These lists were being constantly passed around by people waiting to demo. Had you asked the people demoing the game they would have had alot of information for you in that regard, including rarity distribution.
Furthermore, can we stop with the revisionist history concerning FFG and their move away from the CCG model. They didn't do it because they came to the conclusion that there was anything wrong with the CCG model, except for the fact that theirs wasn't selling. They rebranded their CCG as an LCG to avoid the tail-end of the CCG bubble burst and craved out a niche market for themselves. Had the AGOT CCG been selling well they wouldn't have made the change.

Your video is of the In flight report which is on the second or third day of Gencon and only open to the few that can fit in the room. There were 60,000+ at Gencon. Did you even read my original post? I am talking specifically about the sales pitch at Gencon on the floor. Maybe you have not been there but that video is not representative of the sales floor.

They appeared to do it because they wanted people to be able to afford to play.
The non-random format makes it simple to play multiple LCG™s without breaking the bank, dramatically increasing the chance to find opponents that play the same game you do.
Their words not mine. I guess they want people to not play the same games? Some clarification should be nice on why they have made this shift.
I was in the demo area for Destiny, for about 4 hours in total through the weekend. 2 on Thursday when they were being silly and letting us play full games, 1 hour on Saturday getting my other promo, and 1 hour on Sunday waiting for my friend to get his.
Thoughout those 3 visits people were circulating the card lists which had printed rarities, asking about symbols on the dice which denoted rarities, discussing deck building post starter which involves expansion packs, inquiring about rarity distribution, how to obtain additional dice, and generally asking how much the game cost and the like.
The idea that FFG was at all not forth coming with the fact that this game is collectible involving blind purchases is just untrue, even when just looking at the demo area.
Also, if you'd like to ensure people read your full posts you may need to look at your formatting. It is very difficult for people to read walls of text like you are posting especially on mobile devices.

So you were interested in the game and afterwards buried your head in the sand ? Like seriously this information is everywhere. Every article mentions the collectible aspect. The product page very clearly shows two starters and booster packs. The videos on the game all discuss it. This very forum is in the collectible games section of their forums.
For someone interested in a game your behavior is very strange as you seem to have done absolutely nothing to learn more about it.

What shift? This is one product out of dozens that is collectible. They are not discontinuing their LCG lines in favor of moving back to CCGs.
Also you say that the LCG model makes it easier to find opponents because people can and do collect multiple games, but how does that jive with the fact that outside of Netrunner and the recently released AGOT all of their LCGs have pretty small followings. Even those games don't have huge playerbases, just bigger then small. The biggest problem for their current Star Wars LCG is finding player for it, with some Regional events not even topping 15 players.

Did you read what was in my original post? You guys need some help. I ...first....discovered....it... at... Gencon. I was not exposed to pre Gencon information. Can I make this any easier to understand? I then read post Gencon information discovering that the game was a giant hole for money to be thrown into. I was simply sharing my experience from Gencon. I guess if you guys are representative of those interested in the game then by being turned off by the CCG money pit and not getting into this game I am doing myself a favor.

FFG made the assertion that LCG's make finding opponents easier. I just believed them.
Clarification was made that CCG fans deserve a cool Star Wars game too. This has no impact on their other games.
I'm tired of hear the game is a money pit justification for disliking CCG's. It's not radically different than a LCG as far as I can tell. You now pay a much lower price for a random card assortment instead of having a higher pay wall for a guarantee for certain cards. For some people $5 here and there for random packs is much more accessible than spending $30-$40 for the core sets and $10-$15 for each cycle pack when they come out. I'm not saying that CCG's aren't money pits, just saying that both CCG's and LCG's are money pits.
They had a card listing with the full set contents and rarity sitting right next to you as you demo'd the game. Cards and dice had rarity symbols on them. Had you asked any questions of the staff there about distribution they would have answered them for you. All of that was in plain sight or one question away.
So what would you have considered acceptable?
Edited by ScottieATFThe QQ is real. Yo listen, your experience was that you didn't realize it was TCG you thought it was LCG. Well GET OVER IT. You are the exception not the rule and coming on a forum thats filled with people have genuine interest in the game to express your ODD perception is not going to get you any sympathy. Your are now complaining for the sake of complaining.
Just giving my 2 cents. I hope the game is a total flop after I sell my two promo's off. Then they can do the game over as a LCG format.
Your two cents are disingenuous. Should have sold your promos earlier they aren't going for near as much now.

If I can't have it my way nobody else can enjoy it either!
Thanks, friend! Let me know what you'd like to sell those promos for!
