the price tag is significant, and more than likely will never have any friends to play with(nobody i know shares my nerdy interests).
is this viable single player game with the app?
possible new player
Ahhh. Kind of. Right now, there is only one short campaign, and one long one. If you buy only the base game (to save cost) then you have only a limited amount of stuff (heroes, monsters, classes, items) so i fear it would get repetitive after a few playthroughs. We expect that FFG will release more campaigns later, but they will come for a price.
So, for solo gameplay, I cannot recommend this game. Spend your dollars on a good computer game instead. I daresay you'd get more fun for the price this way.
But if you are really interested in this game, I would search online (FB, board game forums) for playgroups who play this game. I you are lucky, you get to play Descent without spending a dollar and get additional friends on top of that.
At this point no one knows how often new content will become available for the app. I would say that right now you will get ~15 - 20 hours of play time going through both the mini and full campaign once each. With the base set you will have 8 heroes so you can take two completely different groups through each. The side quests will be different (a little less than half of the quests will be side quests) each time, but the story quests will be the same. There's also two difficulty settings to mess around with. All in all You can probably expect at least 30 hours before things start to repeat completely. Then it's up to you and how easily you get bored of the game. If you are the type pf person who can watch a movie 20 times and still enjoy yourself, then you will probably still enjoy Descent RtL for three or four plays of the same campaign. If FFG releases lots of app campaigns on a regular basis, then this will be a great solo game. If they release one a year, then it probably won't have enough meat for most solo gamers.
There are three coop campaigns available as well which allow for single player goodness. Nature's Ire, Dark Elements, and Forgotten Souls.
I... think so. I do a great deal of single playing, but mostly through the RTL app. And I enjoy it. It's simple to play multiple characters and still have fun on your own. Maby I can't justify the high price tag for a solo play game... but I haven't done enough solo gaming to compare to much,
(reading a little comments above)
yeah maby a computer game would be a wiser choise, something like Wasteland 2 or whatnot
Edited by ishinkenPure solo, not this game. Maybe in a year, after more app contnet is released and we get a feel of how frequent releases will be.
But if you are looking for a tabletop game to play solo that can maybe hit the table with friends or family, I reccomend a Legendary game, or maybe the D&D adventure system. Those arent locked to campaign and are possible to play solo or with 4 other people, one more than descent offers for co-op. Of D&D adventure system itself though, I reccomend The second one, Wrath of Ashardalon the most. It has ,objectively speaking, the most amount of game in the box. For legendary, LE: Predator is highly reccomended, just because it features all modes of play right out of the box.
Point is, right now Descent isn't that good of a purchase if you are in it just to play by yourself. There are other games that work better for that, and have more content for playing by yourself.
If you are just looking for something expensive to soak your time up, I actually reccomend Endless Legend. Its a computer game that has a few DLC packs now, and its overall a good game that I would love to have someone to play with.
ok, great answers thanks for that, kk Ill just say no to this tempting drug.
@Chance i got endless legend, whats your steam handle?
The Survivor Fox. I look forward to the future.
The first reply hit it on the head, it is a fun game to play even solo, but after a play through it will get old if you aren't adding content such as expansions or monster packs.
The replay value is more interesting with a group as you can switch up roles and just interacting with people on a regular basis is healthy even if it is the same campaign over and over again
But until that time comes, go check out a video game like Pillars of Eternity, solid dungeon crawler game with core RPG elements that will keep you busy for 100 hours or so with the expansions. Runs on most old school comps to if that is an issue.
Another option for solo play is the Lord of the Rings card game. I recently picked this up myself and it plays really well solo or with one other person.
Edited by FrogTriggerI purchased this after finishing Imperial Assault with some friends. While it is best with other people, I don't find it too difficult running four heroes AND the Overlord at the same time in my practice sessions, to get used to the rules of each quest prior to playing with friends.
