Never mind the U-Wing or Ren's Shuttle

By Baaa, in X-Wing

As much as I really, really want them, how am I going to store them safely?

Feldherr have had way too much of my money already.

Agreed. I'm after getting into Armada of late, which means I need to get foam for all that too (and I may have been silly and gotten one of everything within about a week of getting the core set, so that's a hell of a lot of foam...). Between Wave 9, Armada, and Wave 10, I'm going to be destroyed. The Quadjumper, Protectorate, and TIEs from each wave should fit in the regular trays, but everything else is going to need a goddamn special tray...

I really don't want to look at my spending for the year and see a €200 bill for foam, but I think it's going to happen...

Consider kr multicase cheap but I've used the same cardboard case four years now with no breaking.

It's not the cardboard so much as the foam, and the Feldherr foam is actually cheaper. I wouldn't be complaining if I didn't have to get Armada foam this month, too. Their layouts for Armada are a bit less intuitive than X-wing, which means I need to get nine or ten trays straight away, rather than just a couple. The X-wing stuff will mainly be covered by the pair of regular ship trays I'd planned on getting anyway. I cancelled my order for the Shadow Caster, so the tray for that won't bother me for a while.

I like the raster foam. I fit both YTs, a Decimator, the Firespray and the Transport into a single full-size 40mm layer, rather than needing 5 specific half-sized trays with a load of gaps for things I don't want in foam.

Display them instead of packing them away!

My epic ships are on display, but the small/large base ships stay in boxes for their own protection. I care very deeply for my better half, but she'll be the first to admit she shouldn't be allowed near delicate objects unattended. I've already had close calls with my Gundam kits!

Mine are safely behind glass. I trust my wife, but my cAT-cATs wreak havoc on stuff.

She doesn't even trust herself around some things. I've regular heard a sudden silence in the next room, followed by her arrival with a supposedly non-removable part from something. She's a walking warranty-void clause. The irony is she plays roller derby, and she's 10 times more coordinated with wheels strapped to her feet while getting bashed around, than in shoes on flat floor.

Plus, there's also two cats in the house to contend with... A trifecta of nope for displays.

Time to get her a hoverboard!

I've told her that when I win the lottery, I'm going to build a hose with polished concrete floors, and no door saddles. She can just spend her life skating around the house instead of walking.

Buy a couple large sheets of foam and some hot wire tools. Don't go for polyurethane, as that yellows over time, is harder to cut with hot wires, and releases toxic fumes if you do cut it with a hot wire.

The U-wing looks pretty compact in landing position, so storing it shouldn't be a problem. Not sure about the Ren bat, though.

Did a shearch for what they may have out new case wise and this came up:

How are you guys with feldherr getting around shipping costs or are you all European? I actually ended up going battlefoam. It is more expensive per piece but it's local to ship to the states so it was actually cheaper.

Can't speak for everyone, but I'm in Ireland, so I get the free shipping option. I usually end up waiting until I need enough to qualify for the free shipping, as buying 3 or 4 trays and paying shipping ends up being the same price as buying 6 or 7 and getting free shipping.

Use the plastic they come in.

If you have toys you don't need love.

And painted ladies actually work out cheaper than wives.

I just use Plano trays. Fishing tackles trays with fishing tackle bags. Cheap and easy and does the job just fine. Only had one issue. I closed the lid on a Bwing and broke one gun. Other than that no damage at all. Each section holds the ship with tiles and dial. No muss no fuss.

I use a similar system, but with three trays of ships- one scum & Rebel, one Empire and one large ship (the larges wouldn't fit in my usual Planos); a fourth tray holds templates and token, and a fifth hold bases, pegs, dials and base plates. All fits in a 24" duffle for easy carrying. I can't get the epics or Ghost in there (my Ghost is permanently attached to her peg, now), but otherwise it's near perfect. I've suffered no damage to any ships, at least not as a result of storage.
