Every list needs a plan for dealing with Fel, unfortunately...

The title of my thread is credited 100% to CBMarkham, I take zero credit for it.

With that said can someone please explain to this noob how Fel is so terrifying?

I don't have Fel - I didn't get the interceptor expansion ... yet ... so I'm way behind the times. With that said every time I've seen Fel deployed he's been wiped out very early. I've seen Deci/Youngster wipe him out, I've seen K-wings wipe him out (Inquisitor saved that game but Fel did nothing) ... in fact I've seen Fel do nothing ...

I admit my experience with this compared to the vast majority of you is nothing. I might as well be casting off a dock for sunnies and blue gills while you go for marlin and mako.

Still, what is it about Fel that is so bad ass?

If your response is "read up, noob" that's cool ... please give me a link and I'll do so. So far every game and bat rep I've watched has Fel being wiped out like a snot on a four year old.

Thanks in advance.

He's certainly scarier then he was in the first 5 waves or so. Before auto thrusters and palp.

You'll see this mentioned a lot, but at range 3, with full tokens (1 evade & 2 focus) he's basically untouchable as he usually has auto thrusters, stealth device, and maybe even palp. Even if you shot him with a 4 dice secondary weapon (to remove his range 3 bonus) and got all hits/crits, he'd have to roll all 4 blanks just to take a single damage (one blank changes to evade for thrusters, one changes to evade from palp, token covers another).

He's PS9 which means he moves after almost every other ship, and since interceptors are one of the few ships that natively have both boost and barrel roll, it makes it easy for him to adjust post maneuver to avoid as many firing arcs as possible.

That all being said he's certainly beatable. Most obvious way is if flown by a newer player or someone who makes a big mental goof one round. Otherwise blocking him is huge, as is any guaranteed damage abilities/upgrades. Extra stress also kills him since then he can't PTL anymore.

Once wave 9 comes out you will see A LOT LESS of Soontir. Blackmarket Slicer Tools is FFG's 'hard counter' to Soontir (and most other self-stressing ships). Sure it will take a few months for people to 'get it', but once they do, Soontir will be on the sidelines. Palp Aces will probably consist of mainly defenders for a while and then eventually people will stop taking Slicer Tools (as no one will be using self-stressing ships anymore) and THEN Soontir might make a comeback (depending on how things have changed by then....)

Personally though, I don't think BMST is the right way to 'curb' palp aces. I mean the REAL problem is Palpatine crew card (its waaaaaaay OP for its 8 point cost). If FFG would MAN UP to their mistake on this card and NERF it like they did with the phantom's decloaking rules, then they wouldn't have to make BMST in the first place (or could've made it far less potent). Ah well. Its still a fun game regardless, I suppose. It just would make the game more balanced overall if they were more careful about allowing some of this OP stuff creep in...

I think there are bigger threats than Fel now.

Zuckuss? Slicer Tools? That Caster pilot who just gives out stress?

Fel has so many hard counters that are also huge meta-players.

People complaining about Fel/Palp have forced (allowed?) FFG to make Scum into a ridiculous faction - the shoe is on the other foot and people should be complaining about list-building against ships that can negate every defensive dice roll and evade token.

Good job, you. I hold you responsible.

Fel is good but not indestructible. He is very hard to hit though so the temptation is to pick on easier targets in the games opening turns. This can be a mistake as Fel is at his most dangerous late on the game when there are only a few ships left on the board. This is because his stack of tokens provides him with some good defense. In order to damage him, you have to burn through those defenses before you can scratch his hull. In practice that is a lot easier to do in the first couple of turns when 2 or 3 ships can concentrate fire to take him down.

You mention that you have seen him being taken down a few times. One possible explanation is that the opposing player recognized the threat and decided to eliminate him early on. Having said that, Fel's reputation may be bigger than he is. Also he is not exactly auto-win. He has 4 actions on his dial. The repositioning moves can be used in any order and in any legal direction. This means that in order to get the best out of Fel, you need to get some practice in which actions to perform in particular situation to either save his bacon or close the noose on the enemy.

In unskilled hands, Fel is just 3 Hull hiding behind green dice and he can disappear faster than a politician's expense claim.

Fel is like a lump on your genitals. Get him seen to, you'll be ok. Ignore him and you'll lose your bollocks.

Thanks for all the replies and the mental picture of a lump on my genitals, much appreciated.

Getting a bit more used to thinks I saw where the Fel pilot made some really bad choices with RAC. I had expected RAC and Fel to wipe out a BBBZ list but the RAC-Fel guy just kept making bad choices that resulted in the B-swarm consistently being out of arc.

I see though how Fel can be pretty tricky to play against, thanks again all.

Fels not that scary

Green dice in general are just infuriating

Always bring some form of anti green dice guarantee

Even ghosts will eat your crackshots (range 3; obstructed)
