This habit that ffg have of announcing a pack three or four months in advance, and before already upcoming products have even been fully 'spoiled', is actually starting to irritate me a bit. It really feels to me that they care more about generating hype than delivering anything at this point. I realise that I am likely to be in the minority, and I am happy to wait for each update to come out, but I'm getting tired of being told what will come out way in the future while imminent updates have a tendency to be delayed.
Venting Frustration
I've got my Imp Vets, screw every other wave and release!
Hasn't Wave 9 pretty much been fully revealed?
These announcements are fun for players, but they're really to help build hype for the distributors who place the orders.
Yeh.. just found out about today's news post and didn't even get excited anymore.
I like whats in it (yay the u-wings wings move) but just felt like, yet another preview to throw on the pile.
Aren't we getting a release soon? oh yeah wave 9, i was excited when that got announced.. but now its old news, some people are even playing with it for weeks now, i'm not excited to get it on day 1 anymore.. it's old stuff anyways.
They have always announced a minimum of three months in advance to allow time for orders from distributors etc.
I disagree, personally. Wave 8 has been out for a quite a while, and since then we've only had Imp Vets and a few accessories. There weren't nearly as many X-Wing releases in 2016 as there were in 2015, it just feels like a crap-ton now since the releases are clustering together again. Last year was stuffed with releases: Raider, Gozanti, Waves 6 AND 7, FA Core, and T-70 and TIE/fo. They're just concentrating everything with the new movie coming out. Last year, it felt like a constant barrage of new stuff. This year has been much more slow, the announcements just suddenly vamped up in the past few months.
I'm choosing to view it optimistically. New toys for Christmas! Sounds pretty good to me.
FFG is announcing way too much product for X-wing! It should be more like Armada, with hardly any expansions at all! Who needs all these **** new ships! One X-Wing and two TIEs were good enough for the core, you guys just got spoiled.
/sarcasm/
This is pretty light compared to the post gen contact 2015 "Fire hose". It's an unfortunate side effect of having the advertising for the biggest Star Wars event of the year happen just after the biggest tabletop gaming event of the year.
I like what is coming, wave 9 seems great and wave 10 now has 2 intrestring ships.
But i don't like the fast previews, its just too much.
There are 4 ships coming soon we should be focused on getting those instead of whats coming even later, and forgetting about wave 9 before its even out.
I'm more annoyed that they have released more spoilers for a wave that is still so far away while we still don't have wave 9 ( other than the lucky few who managed to go to gencon ) and how long it has been since they sold wave 9 at gencon and it still hasn't been released, if it was released 1-2 weeks after gencon it would be fine but now nearly 2 months is just stupid
I would be really ok with slightly less in terms of product, rather than preview. Three waves, two single ship expansions (the /fo and T70 were released this side of the new year here), and two ace packs is a hell of a lot. Don't get me wrong; I'm enjoying the hell out of Imp Vets, and the diversity of the ships is great, but that's an arse-ton of money that I'm finding it harder and harder to justify. I've already cancelled half my pre-order for Wave 9, and I'm honestly considering cancelling the rest now that I've seen Wave 10 is both more interesting, and almost here already.
I'd honestly prefer if there were just two waves and maybe an ace pack per year, and they spend a little more time developing and play-testing them. It feels like there's been a bit of a shift to quantity over quality this year, probably driven by the movie schedule. If Rogue One wasn't appearing in a couple of months, I can't help but feel there'd be a very different type of wave in Wave 10, and we wouldn't see it until March.

Not sure I get you. Has FFG got a habit of announcing products and not delivering? For X-wing I can only think of the Starfield tiles that never happened. Sure we've had a lot of announcements in the last three months but based on past performance FFG delivers these products so I'm not sure you can say they care more about generating hype than delivering products. They seem to do both. In fact generating hype (marketing) is good for the game as it keeps its profile high, which sells more products, which generates income, which keeps the game healthy and living.
Disagree strongly. Not that I don't have a reasonably-disposable income, but...I only came by such a thing by living a life that was carefully planned months in advance of anything. I *LIKE* knowing where my budget is going 4-6 months from now. It's - seriously - EXTREMELY advantageous, and rare to come by.
Knowing I'll be buying 2 ships from a given wave, vs buying 7 ships from another wave, is useful information.
(FWIW: I plot out a $45 a month gaming budget. So having the ability to see that I'll be spending, say, $115 in December on minis for X-Wing...helps a lot in planning other gaming purchases in the months leading up to that.)
^ This.
I don't have a hard and fast number for a gaming budget, but I tend not to stray north of about €50 a month, including PC stuff. Some months I won't spend anything at all, so I give myself some more leeway the following month. If I know Wave 10 is going to be five ships I want one each of, I'm quite happy to lay off purchasing anything for the month or two beforehand to make way.
The articles may be a hype train generator, but it's also a handy budgeting planner. Let's face it, X-wing isn't the cheapest game (it's by no means the most expensive either), so being able to financially plan for a wave based on the preview articles is actually great.
(I'd still prefer fewer waves in a year, though...)
Even with a €50 a month budget, which sounds about right for what I spend I guess? On average? There's still not much room for expansions for me, Spiel Essen is coming up next month and my shortlist is currently 28 games I am interested in or certainly buying.
I don't get the time to play tabletop games as much anymore (beyond X-wing), but they're always vying for a piece of that budget. I trim those down to games I will definitely get time to play with the better half, which conveniently cuts out games she's not remotely interested in. Between that, and the backlog of games we haven't gotten around to, new games aren't as much of a priority unless they're somewhat portable (Star Fluxx/Gloom/Exploding Kittens/etc are among our most played for this reason).
It's X-Wing that doesn't get as much tabletime as I would have hoped, but we game regularly with a group and just the two of us and get a bunch of games to the table that way.
So I haven't even budgeted for Marvel Legendary expansions.
Portable microgames I plan to buy at Essen are Welcome Back to the Dungeon, Love Letter Premium and 3 Wishes.
They do it when they do because that's when they tell the distributors: we'd find out anyway so they might as well do a proper announcement.

Love Letter is such a great, quick game. Games like it and Tsuro are perfect starter games for an evening with friends, but they're also great for just something to play together over tea for us. We seem to be more drawn toward those 15-45 minute games than the more drawn out kind. That said, I picked up Pandemic Legacy when it came out, and we've been putting off starting it as our gaming group somewhat broke up due to various work things, so we're probably just going to start that between ourselves shortly.
Pandemic Legacy has been taken about a year now for us, I want to have it finished before the next Spiel at least.
It is a really great game and well worth playing with 4 people.
Tsuro is a favourite with my nephew, I can recommend Celestia as well.
This is the shortlist:
To read reviews and try at Spiel:
Ohh Love Letter Premium has new cards... Yeah that's going on the list methinks. I have the Kanai Factory edition, because I love the artwork on them. I doubt they'll do a Kanai version of that premium set though, so I'll have to settle for fancy new mechanics.
I've been putting off trying Splendor for a long while too. I think that might be among the next pickups for a microgame.

New cards, more players, larger cards, sleeves, fancy box.
Gotta have it.
Not listed:
upgrades such as metal coins, possibly some dndeeples for lords of waterdeep if I can find them.
At least they allow players to somewhat plan purchases and spread costs, as someone who gamed using GW product through the 90s and 00s I find the advanced previews to be a refreshing thing. If you insist on playing with spoiled cards or beta ships on vassal then sure ships may have lost their shine upon release.
You know I thought I would come here and rage at a person for rageing about something stupid but then I read it and I 100% whole heartily agree
