If there was completely different ships between the prequels and the original trilogy. It was bad enough that the prequels had nothing that was seen in the OT, 20 years is not long enough for all the ships to disappear.

If somehow in the middle there were ships that were completely different and not inspired from existing star wars ships i would be really annoyed.

The F-16 has been a thing for over 40 years. That's in the real world where there have been rapid advances in technology.

Star Wars tech is more like a meta shift than actual advancement. New things are not necessarily more advanced than the old they are just better tailored to the needs of the moment. It shouldn't be unusual for Clone Wars military tech (and their variants) to still be in use (and possibly still in production) during the period of time that TFA is set.

I dont really see anything wrong with the Tie Striker or the U Wing, the U wing is a stroke of brilliance fills its role perfectly, but the ties in TFA do bother me they dont look anymore advance then the old ties seems a step back from the tie interceptor and defenders

As far as the U-Wing goes, how does a transport fit into a supposed fighter to fighter combat game. Another large based ship that hangs all over the board. So now they will probably give it something special to make it viable in a game that in reality it would get its b--- shot off in the first pass by a half way decent fighter. Sorry needed to rant, just tired of watching the super freighters, and transports not designed for combat dominating ships that were. The U-Wing may have a very viable place in the game, but not as a ship to ship combat unit. Don't mean to step on any toes, just don't agree with the direction X-Wing goes at times. I must have been a fighter jock in a previous life.

I think these are great, if I had any complaint it's that there's no gunboat.

I like the designs and I also like the similarities or laziness as some of you call it, yes Star Wars is not the rail world but I like it that the new X-Wing looks more or less like the old one.

I think the ships from the prequels look so different because they wanted to show that it was a very different time and two different factions that were fighting.

And yes I know one could say the Resistance and the First Order are new factions but in my opinion they are much closer to the Empire and the Rebels than those two are to the Old Republic and the CIS.

I've heard Disney is building the rogue one stuff with virtual copies of the model kits Lucas and Co. used to bash* together the original trilogy vessels. If that's true then it's pretty understandable that the U-wing and Striker would look pretty similar to the original trilogy stuff. Presumably this is one of the reactions to the backlash against the prequel trilogy.

While I'll admit the degree to which some large based ships can move in this game is a bit over the top, the U-wing is an IFV that flies. It was clearly designed to carry commandos into a hotzone and provide air support if needed. It isn't unreasonable for it to be fairly effective in a dogfight.

Put me in the category of those that like pretty much all the new designs. I'm even okay with the TIE/fo. The only exception for me is that I think the TIE/sf should have had a different look.

Sue me... I like my Star Wars to look like Star Wars. I didn't like the PT designs much at all, though I am happy enough to get the ARC in all it's hideousness.

I dunno, they used a lot of kits for each model. Around 20 different model kits for each Y-wing, and the Star Destroyer used at least 35 different kits with needing multiples of some of them. Wouldn't have been cheap I don't think.

This thread is bananas. The U-wing is one of the best looking ships in the universe.

And as far at Imperial ships go, the Striker is a huge leap from both the standard Tie and the interceptor. How much variation can you really expect from the imperials? there shouldn't be much as far as aesthetics go, yet the striker is probably the biggest leap we have seen in the movies from the original Tie design.

The U makes sense. The rebellion is VERY short on ships, manpower and material. They either make very cheap insurgent thro-away transports (but they do not have enough ground troops to waste with this approach), or you have a hard hitting transport that can stand on its own if need arises (like not enough escorts available, or shot down).

I like the U much, much better than all the stupid YTs, them being worlds better than dedicated military fighter craft.

The thing with these ships is that they fit the design space and theme of the various factions. Any fella can look at that TIE Striker and say "Yep, an Imperial fighter of some sort." I think it is a good thing the designers err, design them this way. It looks and feels 'Star Wars'.

Kylo's shuttle wings are very Tyderium-ish. Without any explanation, we know that it's a shuttle, and probably Imperial. It looks and feels 'Star Wars'.

The U-Wing, with it's name, X-Wing-esque engines, folding wings and Y-Wing-esque cockpit ... it looks and feels 'Star Wars'.

This is why I have difficulties with the Gunboat .. it doesn't seem to fit into the design space of existing ships. Yeah, it look like an Imp shuttle, but isn't .. err!?

If you want to talk about lazy designs though, that new black Imp Shuttle that looks like a geometric salad drawn by a 10 year old using only the line tool in Windows 95's MS paint ... that ship looks lazy.

I agree that that is what they would design as the U-Wing, just hate to see it turn into the YTs as you said. You cant expect a ship designed as a non combat ship?? to be as efficient as a ship designed to shoot others down.

Navy planes have always had folding wings. It's a simple solution to save space for storage, I am guessing that they haven't fully tweaked anti grav engines fully and so still need as much lift as possible when flying in atmosphere. But I am not a rocket scientist so I might be wrong.
To go full nerd about a fantasy universe... Siener provide the Empire with cheap ships, a lot of cheap ships. Easiest way to reduce costs on design is to use designs that have already proven themselves. All TIE designs are a ball with modified wings, I think we need to get used to the concept that TIE's are going to be similar in appearance for a long time to come.

A long range fighter that can disable small craft or attack large craft with its heavy shielding. Sounds like a ligit design space to me.

But that's the problem .. it looks like a 'Star Wars Imperial shuttle'. When a fella looks at any of the TIEs he knows exactly what faction and kind of ship it is (in a broad sense - it's not a freighter or pleasure yacht). Hexagonal viewport, grey, solar panel-esque wings, etc .. all scream 'Star Wars Imperial TIE!' .. Just like a big disk with two sausagess coming off the bum-end scream "Star Trek Hero ship!"

The Gunboat, with it's Tyderium like shape Tyderium style cockpit and folding Tyderium like wings looks like, the Shuttle Tyderium. Not the long range fighter you described, but a shuttle. To anyone who didn't lose half their youth to playing X-Wing and Tie Fighter ... that is what they'd see.

But the Gunboat still looks imperial, from just a glance. People see it and go, oh is that the Imperial Shuttle...it at least looks Imperial right away! And then they find out the gunboat is a fighrer with teeth, big teeth!

Looks more imperial than the Stormtrooper landing craft, and it looks more pleasing by a 1000 times over the shuttle that the Imperials are getting in Rogue One (the giant strange slope looks terrible).

I am floored by this conversation. I think they did a tremendous job for this movie as it predates ANH. I don't care for the U-Boat but it appears they did capture the spirit. Good Job Team!!!

Now, I love the Lambda shuttle. But always thought it was silly to have such long wings. Folding I get as you need to store as much in a small space. But what is up with making longer wings and more wings and crazy stuff like that.

But let me get to the thing that did bug me....i WANTED new ships in TFA. I was disappointed. I wanted new ships in Episode VIII but we are getting A-Wings.

However, last weekend I saw the last flight of a single CH-47 that is being retired after service for nearly 60 years. That is older than most of us. If they don't die, they keep flying. So it is not unrealistic if drawing parallels that with monetary, production, and technological advances that it would be similar.

So we don't have anything to complain about. If we did get more ships then others would complain they have to buy more X-Wing miniatures and more Lego's and more plastic replicas and more models....

Just love it and enjoy the ride.
