The Future of Descent?

By Chaoticus, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hello,

I'd like to share my thoughts on how Descent developed and rise some questions on how it will develop in the future. (Yes I know, Chains is just released and some guy is already rambling about. Sorry for that ;) )

Right now, Descent is HUGE.

1 Base Game, 2 Big Box expansion, 5 small box expansions, 9 H&M packs and 20 Lieutenant packs have given us

-60 Heroes,

-56 Monster Groups

-20 Lieutanants

-6+1 Warrior Classes,

-6+1 Scout Classes,

-5+1 Mage Classes,

-5+1 Healer Classes,

(+1: Hybrid)

-9 OL classes,

-20 OL plot decks

and nearly 100 different tiles.

Descent is really HUGE. Probably, I won't be ever able to play with all heroes and I event don't own all H&M packs.

So, with Chains coming out this week, I was wondering in which direction Decent will develop. Does it make sense to just add more stuff to the existing pile? I would answer this question with no. Instead, I'd love to see (some day, not next week) some different stuff.

So here are my opinions:

1) We have more than enough heroes,

2) We have more than enough monsters

3) We have enough Lieutenants and Plot decks.

4) Some say that a 6th Mage and Healer class should be released, but with all the fan-made classes out, this is not an issue for me.

I love Descent and anything that keeps this game fresh is very welcome. But given the size of the game, more of the same is not the way forward. This is why I would like to make my little wish list (i.e. some weaknesses the game has right now)

1) More search cards or a search deck II (similar to Basic II)

2) A pack of interesting tiles only? Maybe with a campaign?

The new tiles are maybe the coolest stuff of Chains (for me), since these can be used in the Quest vault as well.

3) Maybe a new campaign book? The one for Heirs of Blood is awesome.

4) and finally, please, FFG, improve the quest vault. Currently a few thins are missing. H&M Packs, Markers with specific Heroes, star-marked search tokens and very important: An option to create a whole campaign, not only single quests. (I.e., the Quest Vault should create a single Pdf and should include options for maps (traveling) and diagrams for the quest order. I think it's time for the Quest vault to come out of beta.

Descent is now 11 years old, but in may view, the creativity of the crowd could keep this game fresh and cool for decades to come. I hope FFG supports the Fans in doing that.

They will certainly continue to develop RTL, which I like as well, but the computer simply cannot compete with an intelligent OL.

More quest books like Heir to Blood using different tile sets or requiring different expansions or monster packs.

More RTL campaigns that make use of different tilesets. (for instance, you can not purchases unless you have lair of the wyrm and the base set in the collection)
More small box campaigns with tilesets.

Honestly, descent has a pretty awesome set to work with and good mechanics, they could just sit and pump out campaigns boxes/books and RTL campaigns and keep this running for a very long time.

For sure, the game is huge in component, but, it could be hugier ;)

There's still room for some monsters and heroes, and as an Overlord, I won't argue much about new monsters. But not finish the CK would be strange, indeed, and I will be really disapointed to not have my werewolves as monsters !

For sure, the game is lacking on :

- classes, for heroes, but OL too. having to choose in many heroes but so few classes is a bit frustrating. For the OL, same here. So, I think there should be at least 10 classes for each archetypes in total and at least 15 OL class in total. And with custom made class, ideas are here !

- campaigns. Books like "Heirs of blood" would be the best ! and why not sold with some tiles ? At least 5 more of theses books

- Finishing the CK, it frustrates me to not have them all remade and having some monsters more would be really cool, since many of them are useless

- And for sure, the Quest Vault. If that tool was better, indeed, everyone could be able to do his own stuff and then the game would be more alive.

- And last but not least : a balance pack. A set of cards rebalanced since many of component of the game are really too strong or too weak.

Besides more classes I would love to see new box (!) campaigns that add new ways to play the game. Ally's, OL effects, Tainted cards were all good additions. Maybe dynamic terrain, a bit like the crumbling terrain but more advanced. Like a raft that moves around each turn or something like that. How about (mini) campaign books that maybe includes some tiles, or a class, some shop cards. Similar to the expansions we have already but more focused on the campaign and with more regular release?

I think Campaign books would really be useful.

I want a familiars and citizens figure pack to replace most of the tokens! I would wager quite a few people would pick that up. Proxies just aren't cutting it for me. Also, I will never complain about more classes. A solid 10 for each archetype and more hybrid classes would be amazing. I'm just getting in to exploring fan made classes and it's been fun, but I'm having to play mostly solo right now and they're not supported on RtL.

Familiar figures should have been made right away. What is the cost of adding 1 or 2 additional figures in the box? i presume way less than what people would want to pay.

So many good Ideas :)

I hope FFG is reading this forum a bit.

I they give us only one well thought and designed expansion every year, I think they could run this literally for another 10 years or more.

I'd be happy with a Basic III for OL.

How do you recommend handling familiars that are not counted as figures if they actually have a figure?

Personally I'm ok with most of the familiars not having a figure since only a few of them count as figures at all. The familiars counted as figures probably should have gotten one. Would have made rules issues easier to handle.

Potentially more 12 heroes from first edition. For me, more monsters are not enough :P . I bet in a expansion box for Road to Legend soon ;)

An expansion box for RTL would be the dumbest idea ever. What would it offer that that would be unique to that sort of watered down version of Descent, that couldn't be used in the real base game? If it offers any tiles, monsters, heroes, classes,.. they might as well add a campaign because otherwise they might alienate/anger their original players.

Off course they will not alienate the original players and off course the content released will not all RTL exclusive.

My opinions about your opinions ;)

1) We have more than enough heroes - I can agree. In a game with four heroes, at maximum, the quantity seems cool. But more would be welcome, not a bad thing;

2) We have more than enough monsters - I totally disagree. Thre is room to tons of new monsters, but I can see some of them being useless for an overlord that wants to win the game.

3) We have enough Lieutenants and Plot decks. - For the current content, yes. But be sure that with new boxes, new lts will come along.

4) Some say that a 6th Mage and Healer class should be released, but with all the fan-made classes out, this is not an issue for me. - Well, yes. But I'd like to see this classes in original cards, not print and play ;)

(...)

1) More search cards or a search deck II (similar to Basic II) - We're on the same boat, that would be really nice.

2) A pack of interesting tiles only? Maybe with a campaign? - Sure, couldn't agree more. There is room for some things yet .

However, I do feel that having the NPCs whose purpose in any particular encounter is to fight, move around, and get attacked is important for plastic representation! If I'm asked to use them to fight, I need more tactile indicator than a coin-like token! Please give me Town Guards With Crossbows and Town Guards With Spears in the next H&M pack!

Some might say, just proxy. But I've found that Descent is actually hard to proxy for if what you need are humans. 25mm? Most minis are heroic 28mm (Reaper Bones, WotC, etc); I don't want town guards who make my base game heroes look short! How about FFG's own Battlelore Daqan soldiers? They're 23mm they're the size of goblins!

Descent 2e, just give me a few all-purpose town guards/ militiamen with blunted weapons, frightened visages, and a resigned posture. They know why they're in the game; as speed bumps for the monster waves!

In fact, in termes of monsters, I can think of many of them :

- A corrupted ent with no defense die but many HP. Each one could immobilize and the red one could prevent the hero to remove immobilize if adjacent to him

- Werewolves, who can call more of them as heroes are knocked-out. Minors would be light monster and master a tough one.

- Uthuk'Yllan monsters like in Runewars/Battlelore (Giant scarab, demon, etc ... )

- Mounted goblins on wargs with real fast movement, like moving some spaces after the attacl

- Fire Dragons, with aura, burning, fire breath, etc ...

- Djinns and Effrits

Mummies, beholders...and why not some mytical creatures, for a great campaign end? Like the big boss.

While I'm also OCD in wanting everything represented by minis, I do recognize that having the occasional peasant represented by plastic is not needed for most players.

Actually, for militia and gaurds, we seem to have that covered come february with "Runewars Miniatures Game" on the Daqan side.

But what matter is whether or not the minis will be 25mm scale, so that town guards don't make the base game heroes look short. Will Runewars go with 25mm, or their new 28mm scale which you can find with the newest Descent heroes?

If FFG is just going to go 28mm, then I might as well just go buy some WotC or Reaper minis as they're easier to find for me.

I think there has already been a lot of good ideas in this thread.

Personally, the things i would welcome the warmest would be

- No doubt that new quest books using tiles and lieutenants from the exspansions, would be really usefull and would be able to keep the flame going for a long time.

I also liked the idea of a tiny expansion with tiles and campaign only. I see new campaign as the single most important thing. This is why i generally hope for a third big box expansion.

- More shop items are always nice. I really enjoy the variety this contributes with.

- A 6th healer and mage class would also be nice at first, but in general i like to have many class options. I would like to see a mage-healer/healer-mage hybrid class as well.

- Basic III OL deck or some new OL classes

So, firstly i would like to see a third big box exspansion that takes the above mentioned things into account.

After that, i would really like the campaign books to keep commin, using tiles and lieutenants from the different expansions.

Lastly, i really admire the idea of the quest vault. I haven't used it myself, but i will at some point, and this seems really important as well, since we fans, in this way, would be able to keep the spark alive for years to come.

Use the code, not html.

You know what I want for the next release? The same thing I have been wanting for a release for a ridiculously long time now, a very well done storage solution for all the stuff I have for descent (all but the newest expansion, including all the H&M releases and LT figures). FF, I love your game, but as someone who has a massive amount of content it is annoying complicated to sort through all of it right now. A way to organize the tiles numerically and easily retractable, space for all the minis and a way to store them, areas for the cards to be easily separated, token trays for all those tokens to be easily sorted and simply plopped on the table, all in a nice package. As someone who has ran multiple games of descent many times, my content is starting to get a little bit worn and it hurts my pride, but there is simply no way to store this game with how large it has become without doing some major foam core organizing. I would drop some good money on a organizer box for everything, not $300 or something like that, but a well thought out one that is made solid and easy to access everything? I would drop $60-$100 on it easy depending on how nice the whole package looks.

I really liked the dungeon cards from 1e RtL. Pull 3 cards and you have a dungeon. I also liked the idea of an infinite dungeon. I would love to see an option like that for the RtL app. It could select side quests based on the expansions you own, and just load them one after another. Put in a system so that heroes can get XP and shop items as they go, and start to add in act II monsters after a point. Then you just see how far you can get. It would probably have to have options for playing with and without OL. I think the advantage would be that the pool of available quests could easily grow with app updates, and it would offer a lot of replay value.

With that said, I think we're not too far off from a 3rd edition (maybe 2018). That's simply what games have to do to keep long time players buying stuff. I would expect to see full app integration from the beginning (hopefully while keeping the OL as a player option), and another conversion kit for existing stuff. New sculpts of existing figures are also pretty likely. The quality has really improved from the first release of 2e to the latest H&M packs and expansions. I wouldn't mind buying some really pretty new figures, but then again I really enjoy collecting and painting miniatures, so that might not appeal to everyone as much as me.

I dunno. They did it to Mansions of Madness.

A really good app-driven game and a really good player-driven game are really mutually exclusive, and we see it with the RTL app, and how heroes perform vastly differently whether they're played in the base game or with the RLT app. The game is very much balanced around being player-driven, and it shows when it comes to the RLT app. A move towards app-driven gameplay, even if it would still "allow" for the "old" or "classic" playstyle, would no doubt result in exactly what Atom described; a "sort of watered-down Descent" .

Well, I also played MoM, and for some reason, the change bothers me a lot less there. :P Maybe because I felt that was a more thematic game than a really competitive one like Descent is.
