Oh this game and it's sillyness

By sejestephan, in Imperial Assault Skirmish

Am I the only one here that finds it incredibly stupid that:

Lando cannot lead his own wing guard unless he pays for a temporary alliance? He was the Baron of Cloud City after all, and the model is obviously Baron Lando and not rebel hero Lando.

That Vader can team up with Tusken Raiders. "Don't worry guys, I don't hate you so much anymore for killing and possibly ****** my mother"

Dengar and Han can team up. Evidently 'Payback' can be quite forgiving.

Trandoshans and Wookies can team up.

That rebels cannot recruit mercenaries ... I feel like they did that at least once in the movies, and several times in the EU.

That Obi-Wan does not have the 'leader' trait. It's not like he was one of the most renowned generals during the clone wars or anything.

In Magic these are all referred to as the Elephant-in-Boots Issue. The conclusion there is that "occasionally […] nonsensical things happen, flavorwise" but not policing these issues just "make the game more fun."

Now Star Wars has more lore and flavor background than MtG so the issues are more apparent, but it's generally not worth trying to rule on every one of these issues because it would make the game rules tedious. The 3 factions do a pretty good job of communicating this flavor without extensive rules.

If you're interested in a flavorful experience, then IA's campaign mode, or FFGs Star Wars RPG will probably you better.

Also, FWIW, the Rebels can recruit Mercs with Saska's Skirmish Card.

Meh, it's a game not a reenactment.

Short answer: no you're not the only one:

The explanations I have:

On Lando and wing guards: They're corrupt as hell and even he needs to bribe them.

On Vader and tuskens: How much of Anakin is really left prior to his meetings with Luke? Alternatively he's rational enough to realise that the tribe that killed his mother is gone and not hold it against the entire race/culture... yeah nah.

On wookies and trandoshans: Race traitors happen?

As nick said rebels can recruit mercenaries, though the less said about Saska's skirmish card the better. Also in Jabba's realm the new heroes are mercenaries so that might come with a thing.

This is obi-wan after a couple of decades spent alone and stewing in his guilt; look what that did to Yoda.

Vader very obviously still hates the Tuskens considering he seeked out and slaughtered a whole tribe in Darth Vader 01.

Black Krssantan is a mercenary bounty hunter and works with a Trandoshan.

Am I the only one who finds it incredibly stupid that after I play a skirmish and kill Luke and Obi Wan, I sometimes have to play them again... like I JUST killed them why aren't they dead... Or that I get "victory points" by collecting boxes.. What is this! some type of game?

Am I the only one here that finds it incredibly stupid that my opponent is allowed to field Luke while I'm fielding Luke too? :P

Here's my fun attempt at making it all work, which is something I have a lot of experience with, thanks to Lucas not being able to follow a single plot thread across his films:

1. The Wing Guards didn't share a common cause with Lando, they were paid employees. This is Lando paying them. ALSO, despite the model fluff, he IS working with the Rebellion, so you could extend it to his efforts to bring some of his old crew on board there. But I like the explanation that they were always paid employees.

2. Vader hates himself. Subjecting him to the presence of Tusken Raiders would fuel his hate, and his pain, making him stronger in the Dark Side of the Force. Alternatively, Palpatine told him to.

3. Dengar is a mercenary, a bounty hunter. For the right credits, the bloke might be willing to turn in his mum.

4. I assume the Wookies are slaves (possible), or no-name bounty hunters (they exist, and may also be willing to sell their mums). Despite the agenda Lucas pushed, we shouldn't consider every single example of a species to have the same values. Considering how vile some humans are, I don't think this is all that surprising.

6. The Empire definitely has an embargo out on helping the rebel scum, and the current cast of figures we have don't want to tread that line. Even bounty hunters don't necessarily want to bite the hand that feeds them better.

7. This is Old Ben. Old Ben has cast off the leadership role, and gone full hermit. He acted as a mentor to Luke, but that's still not the same as being a leader. Time, the turning of his apprentice, and the rise of the Empire changed Obi-Wan fundamentally. He's no leader, and he may even doubt if he ever truly was.

8. (About playing Luke vs. Luke) Obviously, someone is playing as Luuke and doesn't even realize...

I cannot, CANNOT wait for that card. It'll be the Merc Chewie that we deserve.

Just wait til Patrick comments in this thread...

I always play with themed lists. i don't always enjoy playing un-thematic lists, it does feel silly. but in the end they are cool plastic models in a sci-Fi setting.

i take two or three lists to any tournament and see what the majority of lists are there. like if there are too many imperials, ill use my rebels. if there are too many rebels, i play scum or imperial.
