Hear me out: Massive-based ships

By Rinzler in a Tie, in X-Wing

I got to thinking about what StarWarsDad1138 said ( here ) about having a pint-sized, switch-hitting Epic ship and thought to myself:

I think FFG would be tapping into another vein of gold in the mines of X-Wing Miniatures if they started making a class of ships that were nestled between Large-base and Epic size.

If they made these ships meta-/mechanics-relevant and aesthetic af , the number of people playing Epic would sky-rocket.

I'm thinking they would be costed in the 65-85 point range (naked) and have access to Epic upgrades but would also be playable in 100-point matches (i.e. tournament legal). The Upsilon-Class Shuttle (UPS - W hat can Dark-Side do for you? ), and to a lesser extent the Ghost, tease what the game would be like if there were demi-gods between mortals like Lando Calrissian and the Imperial-Class gods of the X-Wing pantheon. These ships, we'll call them Massive-base ships - will create a run on Epic and the new power-curved Massive ships... $$$ ... alike.

As far as base-size, I would imagine these ships would either be two connected Large bases or a three-by-three of small bases.

This would introduce new actions, more one- and two-slot Crew upgrades like Black Sun Enforcers or Jedi-escort ( ! ), and, most importantly of all, more pre-painted, pure plastic crack. *scratches neck*

Ideally, these ships would be so cool and synergyrate so well in both Epic and 100-point mode that FFG would lose money if they didn't finally give us an Epic Scum & Villainy ship (or three ).

Heck, get MacrossVF1 to sell you his prototypes ;)

Here was an idea for a Star Destroyer base. The concept is to add to versatility Ships in the green triangle area take a token that specifies if they are on top or on bottom. On top is the bridge but more weapons and firepower. On bottom is less firepower but cannot attack the bridge section

That's a lot bigger than what I had in mind but is a really cool idea. I like that small (and very nimble large) ships can fly through it's bases.

Massive doesn't really work for what you are proposing since epic ships are properly called Huge ships. Massive is by all accounts larger than Huge.

I think thats what the Ghost and possibly Upsilon should've/could've been.

EDIT: To your "by all accounts" point, Googles disagrees:

Massive: adj. Large and heavy or solid; exceptionally large

Huge adj. Extremely large, enormous

Go ahead and argue that exceptionally is "by all accounts" bigger than extremely ... <_<

Not to detract from the idea, but those two terms are both meaningless in a reality where "huge" and "massive" things such as this exist:

I like Massive. Intimidating, but not huge .

The Ghost is only 43.9m long so it is on the top end of the large ship scale. It would be interesting if there was tournament play that involved Epic games.

Ever notice how the Rebels always use old modified transports at their large ships?

Read my mind. Put together an example that can't really do the idea justice - couldn't fit enough upgrade slots, especially crew.

Was also thinking about the Jedi Escort crew upgrade:

Jedi Escort

Rebel Only

[ x1 or x2 Crew slots ]

When your ship is assigned a blue or red target lock token, assign one focus token to it. Then remove one stress token.

where do you guys get the cards from to make your own?

I think before any new sized ships are brought in we should at least get Scum Epic ships to balance the factions out. After we get some Scum Huge, we may see a new interest in Epic games in general- as all factions would now have the ability to field Huge ships in Epic tournaments.

Maybe for X-Wing second edition, where introducing new bases sizes can be properly considered, then, along side these extra large bases, we can also have medium sized bases for the TIE Punisher and K-Wing. Hopefully they'll be conversion kits too.

That's a lot bigger than what I had in mind but is a really cool idea. I like that small (and very nimble large) ships can fly through it's bases.

That's because you said Massive Base. Considering that's connatively bigger than Huge, the interpolation of a Huge and a Large ship you were going for isn't the image you're conjuring.

Not to detract from the idea, but those two terms are both meaningless in a reality where "huge" and "massive" things such as this exist:

They're relative terms, and in the case of X-Wing relative to the small bases.

I'm thinking they would be costed in the 65-85 point range (naked)

The Gozanti and GR-75 are 40 and 30, respectively. The CR90 is 90.

You wouldn't have a ship; you'd have a play mat that acted like a ship.

There are no medium based ships despite the CLEAR need for them (ARC-170, K-wing, G1-A, Punisher, Aggressor could have all used a 6cm base). So I'm not expecting much from the idea.

The main issue I can see with introducing an intermediate base size between large and huge is the movement rules:

Large bases already stretch the current movement system a bit, to the point where I'm pretty sure that anything bigger than a large base would require some kind of specialized movement system to not be fundamentally broken.

This raises the question of what system to use. I'm pretty sure the epic movement system would be too unwieldy for the standard 3x3 table, and would be far too restricting for 100pt matches.

Which leaves IMO the only reasonable option as designing a whole new movement system.

Agree to disagree or You're right - whichever ends this rather pointless issue of symantecs. Don't worry - FFG hasn't implemented any of my other ideas.

The costing world have to be engineered by the minds at FFG, though.

I'm not sure the movement system would be too skewed if the bases of these "big" (is that easier to swallow?) bases were a multiple of the small bases and were limited to 1-, 2-, and in extreme cases, 3-speed maneuvers.

Oh well. I'd like to see it.

How about we call them extra large or plus sized?

Then we can talk about your obsession with plus sized models.

They are just big boned

Fat Han will now be known as Plus Sized Han

I like it all. I'm for anything that brings another level of play to the game.

I know that Armada is supposed to be the fleet-based space game, but I certainly think that X-Wing should allow for a bit more fleet-esque close combat.

My thoughts exactly.

I want ships that will allow fleet-like game-play without the cumbersome nature of Epic ships, energy, etc.

i do wish epic would be expanded on more. Sure, we have huge ships, but 1) theyre kinda lackluster atm (which can be completely remedied with a new ruleset without changing a single card) and 2) we have no epic-only non-huge ship stuff yet. LRS is all we got that breaks the range3, but of course thats not epic only and only like what 3 ships can use it?

i'd love to see a lot of cards for nonhuge ships that are labeled "Epic Only" - cards that either would severely break 100pt games or be pointless because theyre huge-ship targeted. They could easily release a pack per faction labeled "Epic Goodies" or some cheesy thing like that with more TIE fighters for imperial (cause TIE swarms make epic more epic), Xwings for rebels (face it, xwings are actually pretty boss in epic), and.....probably khira fighters or Z's for scum. Bulk of the expansion would be a gakton of cards though, not just for the ships included, and all cards are Epic Only.

im a 40k junkie. Im not a fan of the 40k point games (as in, takes over a week to play because the battlefield is your WHOLE HOUSE...yes people do that in fact i just passed up on an invitation to one because they wanted my ta'unar on the field lol) but i love bigger games that take awhile. I fully intend to get a table when i move large enough to house upwards of 1000pt Xwing games so we can play there and just leave it when were tired.

However like i said, epic just feels weird since theres nothing epic only except huge ships, and they need a new ruleset baaaaaad.

edit: oh, it would also give scum large ships a bit of a light "huge ship" feel. All their ships are tricked out in all sorts of mods and expansions, so it makes sense to sparcely hand out some Cargo slots or Teams. probably not Hardpoints though since theyre kinda large lol. Probably makes sense to give the Falcon a cargo slot too now that i think about it.

XL bases/ 1 epic point ships won't happen, since we never got Medium bases for such oddballs like the HWK, IG2000, K-wings, Punishers and ARCs.
