I got to play a game of Armada on Sunday against my girlfriend, my friend, who was supposed to turn up didn't.

This was my girlfriends first game and she loved it. She used to play electronic games (Nintendo) but after exposing her to War @ Sea, Firefly The Boardgame and Armada she's really enjoying tabletop games.

She learnt a hard lesson when she flew her raider right up and parked it in front of my Mon Karren. Other than that the game would have ended up being a draw. The main thing is that she learnt a lot on how to manoeuvre and set up her upgrades on the correct ships and is eager for her next game :-)

She may not play this, but she'll play almost anything else on a tabletop. When I was at Nationals we went to the pub after day 2 and brought Firefly Fluxx and Boss Monster with us. She's a keeper.

I wonder if we can get any female armada community members to chime in on how we can encourage a bigger female representation in this great game?

I have a similar situation. My wife 'has' played Armada and X-Wing before, but mostly only when she feels bad that I haven't gotten a game in a while.

However, she loves board games. We have people over at least once every weekend for late night gaming session of Firefly, Lords of Waterdeep, Dead of Winter, Pandemic, Game of Thrones, etc.

She can cook too.

Women are no less strategic than us but lets take the Myers Briggs MBTI personality test as an example. The INTJ personality (the Architect/ Scientist which seems to be my mindset. . .) is a heavy strategist and makes up roughly 2% of the population. In women though it has been documented as 0.8%. Different mindsets and ways of thinking since males are wired differently than females.

Possiblity 1.

I don't want more "women" to play, just as I don't want more "men" to play. I just want more people to play and I don't really care what gender they come from. That being said, I don't feel any reason to require, suggest or put forth a movement for people's behavior to change to accomodate one group or the other, mostly because I haven't seen toxic behavior at any gamestore. I've never seen a gamer in public pull a "SHOW ME YOUR T!t5!" or anything even close. I have seen gamers smell, dress poorly, and have bad social skills; I think these are as equally off-putting to some men as they are women. But I'm not going to tell a gamer he (or she) has to bathe or to stop wearing that bleeding skull tshirt with the demons growing out of the eye-sockets, any more than I'm going to tell a woman or Jehovah's witness that she (or he) must accept said behavior. Most of the Armada players I've seen are pretty mature and respectful...

so that brings us to Possibility 2: Women just aren't into highly strategic games. I happen to think men and women are wired differently. I'm sure those differences extend to any number of things, not the least of which is what they consider entertainment. My wife watches us play Armada and thinks it's torture. I'm sure there are some women that would love Armada. I don't know what the proportion of women vs. men into strategy games is (what's the "normal" ratio); maybe it's higher than I think. I'm quite sure, however, men are not purposefully denying access to women from playing Armada.

My problem with these types of "Crusades" is that they tend to assume possibility 1 is what's going on, and they declare a Gender Priviliege Inquisition! if anyone dares suggest it has more to do with Possibility 2. And, frankly, I'm just very tired of this accusation, as I have striven* to be respectful towards all people throughout my life, men and women.

*Strived was showing a spelling error, and auto-correct suggested striven. Sound weird to me, but i'm going with it.

Oh, women can be strategic but they have always been that cloak in the night types as an average. Many famous men had women behind them doing the things that the men would never consider.

Sounds like you're really trying to get offended to me, because that's not what I'm saying.

It's no one individual's fault that we live in a society where many women often make the perfectly rational choice to avoid entering a space filled with men they don't know, any one of whom could be a jerk happy to ruin their night just because they're a woman, or who could be an outright creep. Unfortunately, that also means there's not much specific action we can take that will encourage women in general to play more Armada, other than continuing to be friendly and welcoming and not taking it personally or being a jerk when someone relates their lived experience or concerns to you.

You know. I usually (ok ALWAYS) joke around on this forum, but this statement kinda got me a little mad. Look, I think all of us have been in environments at gaming stores where the prevailing customer is men. I've personally witnessed guys really come on a bit strong to a female presence in their stores. I've seen other stores where no one really gave a **** and just went on about their lives. Considering the current climate in America, it isn't surprising that some thought is given consideration to the fact that ....YES,guys can make women feel uncomfortable or unwelcome in this environment.
