Lieutenant Attribute test

By Lewton, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hey all,

I'm very new to the game, and I have been Overlord for my group's game, I just won the interlude for Shadow of Nerekhall, and I want to pick the next quest, Overdue Demise looks like a lot of fun, but the one thing that jumps out at me is the attribute test for Tristayne Olliven.

He need to pass it 5 times, but can he do the test twice per turn or only once? Clearly if I can do it twice this will make it much easier for me :)

I checked on the forums and the rules, but all I saw was;

Lieutenants have attributes and make attribute tests, just like heroes. However, minion and master monsters do not have attributes. If a minion or master monster is required to make an attribute test, it automatically fails the test. Remember, cards or abilities that reference defense dice do not apply to attribute tests unless specifically noted.

Thanks for taking the time to read this,

L

Monsters (including lieutenants) have two actions they can use as you see fit. The only restriction is of course that a monster or lieutenant can only perform 1 attack action. So unless the quest specifically says he can only test once each round, he can make two tests.

Thanks for the reply, that is pretty much what I thought as well, just wanted to be sure

One other thing, if a monster has an action like Rend, I read that using this counts as the combat action, so I can not attack and use this instead of moving, is that correct?

Monster Action: Some monsters have unique actions listed on their Monster card with a . If any special action allows the monster to
perform an attack, it counts as the monster’s one attack action for that activation.

It counts as an attack if (and only if) you go through the steps of combat (declare target, roll dice, check range, spend surges, deal damage). That's what tells you an attack has occurred. Simply doing damage or even rolling dice and inflicting damage equal to the damage rolled is not an attack.

Rend is not an attack.

Like Zaltyre said, Rend is not an attack. Many, many abilities that monsters (which includes lieutenants) are not attacks, and doesn't mention the act of performing an attack.

This can be tremendously important to remember, since there's many ways the overlord can inflict pain without performing an attack. Causing Damage or inflicting a Condition is not by itself an attack, and there are many, many, many situations where the rules will tell you to deal or apply damage or make someone suffer a Condition. The distinction is important because this is not just an issue of applying conditions, but in most cases where damage is dealt, since it's not an attack, the target also do not get to use any defensive dies.
