Storage ideas ??

By SPINAL, in X-Wing

not sure where to post but im curious what pilots use to store n carry their models. im used to having a trunkload of cases when I transport my other games. what do u recommend? im a collector so large, huge, and a lot of small minis.

I dont tend to carry a large fleet to the FLGS.

I have a backpack that i take a snack/drink, notepad, rulebooks, and card binder in. For long days or tournaments, bring some food, water, extra deodorant, a toothbrush, and any other essentials that might make the day more pleasant for yourself and your opponents.

I pull my cards/tokens/ships the night/day prior, and have them set aside ready for the next day. Generally i bring two lists with me.

Then i carry a small tackle box with my minis/tokens/templates etc for the day.

If i am moving from table to table alot, then the essentials for use with my list get placed into a shallow Tupperware container to make it easier to pack from table to table.

I know others that bring pretty much their whole fleet every time they come for an x-wing game, but then end up flying the same list every week. Their setup and breakdown time increases dramatically, and they generally spend less time gaming, and more time sorting through their fleet.

I really like Feldherr , but agree with the previous poster on not taking my whole fleet with me. I have a bunch of the foam inserts for the corresponding ships but like the MINI case as it can carry a few different lists.

I've got a link in my signature of what I use. I'm against expensive foam and their specific bags. They cost way too much and you are always outgrowing them. I prefer Plano as a cheap and utterly equivalent substitute. Even better, I say.

Mini-Plus it is for me. I can store two 100pts squads in it and carry plano for tokens as well in a mini-plus.

But I will admit, for epic I need something bigger than that. ^-^

Speaking of planos and only carring what you need. Microhangars are a solid solution for at home, feldherr foam and just card boxes work fine too, which allows to just grab the foam and pack it into your Feldherr bag as needed. Planos are always a valid solution too. I am not a fan of battlefoam, except when I am really concerned about space. Feldherr is more spacious, cheaper per ship. Microhangars would be my favorite home storage solution if I would have to the time to fiddle with it.

Same here i use Feldherr cases ;)

Buy a roll of cheap foam, some hot wire cutting tools, and make your own storage solution. I'm not a fan of delicate model ships bouncing around a plastic container, so that's what I did.

Plano tackle boxes are the way to go in my area

I have 3x Plano 1374's which could technically travel but I would rather pack a few armies in smaller planos.

I have an old battlefoam bag from the 40k/warmachine days that holds 6-7 plano tackle boxes, works great

MicroHangars, of course... ;)

My favorite Tournament box is the one you see below. The top makes for a good tray to quickly pick up stuff and move between tables.

My wife gave it to me for Christmas and found it for a few bucks in a local store.

Dimensions are 11.20 x 7.88 x 4.50 Inches.

I found some stiff foam at work and made custom layers for my templates, ships, tokens, and cards

If I get a chance, I will take a photo of the finished set-up and post it.

I found this online at Walmart for $2.60

I'd love to see the finished set!

This was customized for that particular list with Deathrain, Redline and 2 Academies, but could fit different setups if I needed.

Bottom Layer has dice, dials, Cards and tokens.

Middle layer has templates and thru-holes for ships.

Top lays out tokens, obstacles, and cards and fits around the ships sitting just on top of the middle layer.

Slots for the tokens allow me to pull of just what I need and put them back quickly when I move.

I also use the Stanley Cases, but I cut out the vacuum-formed trays that the ships come in for just a little more protection. What I like about them is it is very easily to shift and shuffle stuff around in them, and it's easy to expand. I've had everything in one case until now, but I will probably pick up a second and split into Rebel/Imperial cases. No matter what you start off with, you'll eventually outgrow it, if you continue collecting!

I have one for Rebels/Scum/Imps and for templates/dice/tokens. 4 in total which works really well for one of each exp.

Yep! I even double stack some of the Rebel ships because they have such a thin profile.
