Repainting squadrons

By Payens81, in Star Wars: Armada Painting and Modification

I am new to painting and for that matter painting minitures. So when I started out I started withis all the x wings and tie fighters that I had. Now after painting a bunch, learning some new techniques and getting better brushes I think I am doing a better job. So I am tempted to go back to those squadrons and take another stab at them. But I am not sure can I just paint over the paint that I had? Can I just re-prime them? Or am I going to lose too much detail because of all the layerstuff of paint?

And if that is the case should I then strip them? And if so how? Or just say the heck with it andoesn't leave them.

If you're starting over, you should strip them. I use a degreaser made for automotive applications called Super Clean. It comes in a purple bottle and I just looked it up, they have it at Walmart. Just fill up a cup and plop them in. I speed up the process with an old toothbrush. Afterward, rinse them really well and you'll be ready to paint.

I've just restarted painting and I've never painted this much detail on a small scale. Get a magnifying glass if you don't already have one. It will help tremendously.

To eliminate "hand shake" issues which will come naturally, do 2 things: 1. BREATHE (yes, this has to be said because I still find myself wanting to hold my breath when working on some fine details) and 2. find a way to connect your brush hand with your model hand. My squads go on sticks so I hold that with index and thumb of my left hand while I hold the brush with my right (Captain Obvious right there). This is the trick: I then touch the fingertips of the idle fingers on both hands together to make two hands one. If I can figure out how to take a pic, I will. All those things and quality paint have made me better.

Edit: not the best pic but you can see what I'm talking about. I'll also vary this technique depending on the model, where the line has to go, etc.
