I was usurped by my own son!

By drjkel, in X-Wing

So, here I was, having a good day with my Bossk, Kavil, N'Dru build, winning my first three games rather quickly and losing to one of the better player in the region, but getting serious MoV in the process and I thought "finally, I'm going to place really high!"

The rankings were done and I was second, yay! Then the nice person in 6th place noted that something was off, he was 1-3 and shouldn't be that high, out of 11.

After clearing up with the TO that, yes, my son beat him in the second round (after getting the random bye) and not the other way around, my son edged me out for 2nd place, having tabled his last opponent.

This was his first actual tournament, he went 3-1 (including the bye).

I'm really proud of him, I was expecting him to go 1-3 including the bye. That goes to show that I was wrong when I thought I wasn't improving whenever we play, he's just doing so as fast (if not faster) than I am.

Triple x7 Glaives with crackshot are scary, and I think his loss only came because I told him not to run them as a group, to get him to practice mini-vacation. Well, that and Fenn Rau hits like a truck!

My son is 6.5 years old... So, yeah, he'll be going to World someday, to bring me back the top level swag...

I think you should pull him out of kindergarten and focus on x-wing it's clearly his true purpose in life.

You'll of course need a forth job to support him.

And I realized at dinner that if there had been a top 4, we would have played each other. His reaction was "we should do that!"

And we shall. I may try to record it, hopefully I come out on top and he learns an important lesson out of this.

Triple Glaives v. an ace-hunting scum list, the odds are not horribly against me, right? ;)

Actually you are the one who usurped your son and not the other way around ;) .

When he met you, he was but the learner. Now HE is the master.

Better be careful he doesn't throw you into a reactor...

I attended the tourney today -- and was the person who managed the only win against the little rascal -- and it was a pretty impressive scene.

I agree, it mostly came down to the wide deployment and Fenn Rau arc-dodging while throwing 5 dice attacks. But Fenn was lucky to even get to that point, as the game started with an unexpected traffic jam that had me worried he'd be taken out early, token-less, by range 1/2 Defenders that successfully snuck through the Autothruster buffer. The other factor was the Defenders having to take a few stress tokens to stay in the fight, which took away their important focus actions.

On that note, if your son sticks with that list you might want to recommend the tiny asteroids instead of debris clouds, since the Defenders deal so poorly with stress.

The kid is a tough game. He picked mostly solid maneuvers, had no trouble lining up his attacks while avoiding obstacles, and had a thorough grasp of the rules (even caught me overlooking a few things, like when I forgot to move Zuckuss at the right Initiative step after he became PS 0!)

Yeah, his biggest failings were listening to me on the deployment, and me telling him that sometimes the red turns were not the worst move (which he overdid a lot that game). He stopped that for the next two games... to great success!

Seeing him bait Whisper and Oicunn into a trap, then doing a very similar thing to Rexler, Vessery and Omega was a thing of beauty.

He picked the debris, as he wasn't sure he could avoid obstacles all the time and wanted to get shots off. He'd flown defenders a bit when Imp Vets came out, but never three of them and since he mostly k-turned, that didn't work out too well against me. In his practice with 2 Defender and Tomax against me yesterday, he rocked one of them second turn and was affected by it, it's why I set him up with triplets, similar abilities and all.

Knowing him, and he's like me, it's gonna be pretty hard to convince him to run the same list again ;) This was my first time with my trio, and it may not appear again! I know he had a gleam in his eyes when I told him about bombing k-wings, since both of ours are technically his (christmas present from my director and rightfully winning his today).

But hey, seeing all the grown ups come to term with him made me feel better. I kept feeling I wasn't improving this summer, mostly playing him. He was just improving as quickly (or faster) as I was.

He'll be back in future tournament, though with first grade starting on Wednesday, it'll depend on scheduling.

Though, to be fair, Defenders are a family thing, so that is more likely than any other list to make a repeat appearance. Especially now that we have 6 of them and my Maarek is almost done being painted.
