Game idea: A crew and their tank

By Rakaydos, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Forged in Battle has the clone wars AT-TE, with a primary crew of 3 and up to 4 secondary gunners, and the LAAT/C designed to transport the above, with 1 pilot and 2 more seats if needed.

So excluding gunner spots, that's a party of 4- Pilot, Driver, Vehical comander, copilot/spotter. Could even have multiple tanks so you're not going alone.

I'd be interested in a game with this premice, either a Clone wars "war movie" or with refrbished tech in the rebel era.

On a planet where the atmosphere prevent signals reaching orbit, a lone tank is separated from the main column of the Republic forces. It must travel through enemy lines to rejoin and win the battle for the Republic.

Without air support, looking at a party of 6- 2 drivers, 2 mission specs, a Clone Commander and a Jedi General, with 2 tanks and 8 Imperial Clone Gunnery troops

You would probably also want an ACE: Rigger (or other mechanic) in there to keep the tank purring like a kitten

Using just AoR and F&D for a possible Jedi:

Commander: Figurehead or Squadron Commander (though Instructor would be interesting

Ace: Driver

Solider: Heavy*

Ace: Gunner*

Ace: Rigger (or Scientist; Engineer)

With a possible Jedi of some sort

* possible multiples

This would have 5 or 6 PCs with extras being PC controlled gunners for extra guns (either a minion group or some rivals)

If you wanted to move this upto an armored platoon, you could have each PC be someone that was in a separate tank, with one being a Commander: Squadron Leader or Figurehead commanding the platoon from 1 vehicle with the other PCs being 1 crew on the other tanks and controlling that vehicle's crew for other things.

For a AoR adventure/campaign, any number of war movies would provide a good start, like Fury, Sahara (the Humphrey Bogart movie), or White Tiger. The Rat Patrol would be another good place to start, depending on how long you wanted to stretch it out. If you've time to do a little research, I'd suggest reading An Army at Dawn: The War in North Africa, 1942-1943 by Rick Atkinson. It details the comedy of errors that was the American entrance into the war (frankly, it's a miracle that we won) and the evolving relationship amongst the Allies any of which could easily be adapted to a wartime campaign.

If you're looking for a EotE game, a salvaged AT-TE (with or without LAAT/c) would make for an interesting mobile base for a team of mercenaries or bounty hunters. Alternatively, you could even go for a Fast and Furious feel, with your team of criminal specialists trying to steal one and get it away... across forbidding terrain perhaps? Working further with the movie theme, perhaps they need to get a small battlegroup through impassible terrain to effect a raid or capture an objective, a la Lawrence of Arabia .

Some people don't like stealing ideas from movies or other pop culture sources, but my friends always geek out when they realize that they're reenacting (in some way) a famous moment from history or from a movie.

Just like The Warriors .

Or if you want to go farther back, Anabasis .

The story of the Ten Thousand is one of my favorites! My Greek isn't nearly good enough to read it in the original, but there are some compelling translations floating around.

A similar concept I have always though would be cool is a part all in a starship that is a little like a Lancaster bomber from WW2.

- Pilot

- Co-Pilot

- Bomber

- Engineer

- Navigator

- Gunners

I thought the ship could have a relatively small silhouette, to sneak in and out, and its primary mission is to jump into a location, drop heavy ordnance on a base or capital ship, and then jump out. The gun crew are there to protect against smaller starfighters.

Interesting game idea:

Guardian - Peacekeeper (Tank Commander)

Ace - Driver (Drives)

Ace - Gunner (Shoots the big gun)

Soldier - Heavy (Shoots the anti personal guns)

Engineer - Mechanic (Fixes Tank and operates coms)

While I really like this idea, I'd be tempted to keep the Tank Commander an NPC (particularly if he/she is a Jedi).

This way you can issue ridiculous commands for the party to have to work with/around/accomplish in a fairly easy manner, and it also immediately makes the party a cohesive group on the same level, as opposed to dealing with hierarchy or power struggles.

And I'm really thinking about swiping this idea, somehow...

Here are some ideas for inspiration -

Although my favorite (and definitely the way I'd go for an Edge based party)
