Joe's Repaints and mods

By JoeVandal49, in X-Wing Painting and Modification

Hey everyone. I decided that after 15 years of no painting, that it was time to jump back in. Its nice not having to paint, and instead WANTING to paint.

Anyways, i thought i would start a thread to share my work as i progress.

Any comments, suggestions, or constructive criticism are greatly appreciated.

Here is my first ship. Its still a WIP with a lot left to do. Sorry for the low quality photos. i will try to get better ones of the finished product as these are off. Still a lot to do, but im happy with the progress so far.

Excellent work on this one. The varied colors on the armor plating does wonders for bringing this ship to life. Also, the fact that I don't have to paint my X-wing minis but can when I choose to was one of the big draws for me.

Loving it. It seems to echo Mondrian, but in tans and grays.

Glad to have you slinging paint again. I know that feeling of getting back into it; like a comfy pair of pants you thought you were too big for.

Yes, it does have a bit of a scummy partridge family vibe to it. I had actually considered doing a mondrian scheme on the cockpit and wings, but decided against it.

This one im ending up working more towards a "freight train" kind of look. Still lots of weathering to add, plus all of the small detailing like lights etc.

I may one day revisit the more bold color palette though on another yv.

Looks like the Partridge Family bus.

Did I just date myself?

Still a WIP.

Things are getting a bit scummier. Still going for that old freight train feel.

Anyone know a "grey" tone that will match the engine area well? Im thinking i want to match the cannons or whatever they are on the side to the grey area of the mechanical components and engines, but am uncertain of what types of paint to try to match.

Up next, the bots. Slight mod on three of the aggressors s-foils. Paint will be next.

WIP on my x-wing gaming table. Still need to finish adding and finishing the trim.

Looking for some opinions on the trim color. The two options I'm looking at are staining it a walnut color, or painting it rebel Orange with a white pin stripe. Opinions welcome.

Please excuse the fleet display. It's temporary until I find something more suiting. I moved into this home a year ago, and am just now getting into the basement remodel.

Pro tip- Choping up one of your wifes yoga mats to place under you gaming mats is an awesome way to get a very nice non slip surface. Beware wife aggro. The yoga mat does a great job of gripping both the table top and the mat, as well as offers a very nice dampener for dice rolls. I have virtually 0 mat slip. any slip that exists is purely game piece slippage. give a little over hang on each play side, and you have a nice grippy surface for your templates and cards.

Cut squares of yoga mat or mousepad and glue them into your bases. Really helps with the ships slippage as well.

I have heard of this as well. Great advice.

You don't try doing Downward Facing Dog on your table do you? That would be downright silly.

Looking forward to your finished Aggressors; I like their unique poses.

Progress, Again, i apologize for the low quality pics. Im horrible at pics of minis. None of these are 100% accurate color interpretations.

Im seriously leaning towards adding some graffiti accents and details to the "freight train".

Onward to the finishing touches...

Where is everyone getting their magnets, and what type are you using?

Decals showed up just now...

20+ n scale decals later...

Just waiting on a couple specific decals from different sheets coming in the mail.

After those get placed, it will be time for the finishing details, clear coat, and magnets.

I could see Bossk coming back to the Mos Eisley starport and finding his ride tagged like that.

Of course, someone would be getting skinned alive.

Bossk: "Whaaat isss thisss ssshhiii*?!! Ssssssomeone'ssss going to paaaaay for thissss!!"

Great job! Had exactly the same idea in mind, but I couldn't find the decals.

K4 Security: "Sir, I told you this is a bad spaceport, I should have stayed in the ship. The probability to get a ship tagged in this spaceport is 899 to 900".

That's such a cool idea! I may steal this one...

Stay tuned for some more incoming. Going to try to put together a fleet with this unifying theme. Its all going to have a scummy spaceport/junk yard/ train yard feel to it.

4 aggressors incoming, followed by a jm5k.

Decals are all finished. Showing off the other side. Finishing details and clear coat and this one will be ready for the table.

Very creative color scheme. Pics look great.

Those minor details...Again, really sorry for the low quality pics. I suck at taking photos. Maybe i can get someone here local to take some better ones.

Anyways, this is mostly done. Magnets and few minor touch ups and then ready for the table.

The pics look good. Just try to avoid having a bright light source coming from behind the subject and it should be good enough for this forum. :)
