"Imperial" PbP recruit

By Blackbird888, in Star Wars: Age of Rebellion RPG

So I want to pitch another PbP, a little different from the previous. Please read the following, as it's very important:

The hook is this forgone conclusion: the players will defect from the Empire, and take their ship along with them.

All the other details (how? why? who with? when? where?) will be worked out in the storytelling.

Sound good? Still reading? Wait for the next bit.

The other catch is that each player plays one of the six careers from Age of Rebellion. So we'll have an Ace, a Commander, a Diplomat, an Engineer, a Soldier, and a Spy.

If you're still here, read some of the other details:

So an AoR career-only game with all six careers being used. We'll also start at Knight level. Of course, starting as Imperials, species options is an issue (as, in this version of the Empire, they're fairly humanocentric); use fair judgment in this case when choosing. Gear chosen will be what you can afford, but also take into the account of considerable resources the Empire provides, which can be accessed for a time.

If you've made it this far, here are some ideas for characters:

Now, these are only ideas,

Aces:

  • Drivers may be a part of the Imperial Vehicle Corps, or a Scout trooper trained to use speeders.
  • Gunner may be a member of the Imperial Gunnery Corps, a copilot/gunner on a shuttlecraft.
  • Pilot is obvious.
  • Beast Rider may be a specialty Stormtrooper or Scout trooper, i.e. sandtroopers on dewbacks.
  • Hotshot is obvious as well.
  • Rigger may serve as an engineer, or the pilot of an Imperial shuttle or assault craft.

Commanders:

  • Commodore may be the captain, executive officer, or other high ranking member of the ship.
  • Squadron Leader may be in charge of the starfighter complement, or the leader of ground forces (may be a member of the Vehicle Corps).
  • Figurehead could be in the same boat as the Commodore.
  • Instructor is odd, but it could be the security chief, executive officer, or similar.
  • Strategist may fill the same roles as the Commodore.

Diplomats:

  • Ambassador and Advocate may be filling some form of political or legal role.
  • Advocate, Agitator, Analyst, and Propagandist may be an Intelligence or DeStab agent.
  • Analyst may be working as a ship navigator, computers technician, or electronic warfare specialist.
  • Quartermaster can fill a rather obvious role as ship quartermaster.

Engineers:

  • Mechanic could be the ship's chief engineer, assigned as chief engineer to the attached starfighters. May also be Vehicle Corps.
  • Saboteur may be Intelligence.
  • Scientist may be ship medic (ethically questionable mad science medicine is not forbidden), or some kind of analyst.

Soldiers:

  • Pretty much all the specs can fall into any of the various Imperial Navy or Army Troopers, Stormtroopers and specialty groups, or Scout troopers.
  • Sharpshooter may also be Intelligence or an Imperial assassin.
  • Medic may serve as field medic, but may also be the ship's medical officer.

Spies:

  • Infiltrators and Slicers may be Imperial Intelligence.
  • Scouts may be Scout troopers or other specialty Stormtrooper crops.
  • Slicers may be similar to the Analyst, as computer technician or electronic warfare specialists.

Positions closed.

  • Kael playing an Engineer.
  • Richardbuxton playing a Commander/Commodore.
  • TheTeaMustFlow playing a Soldier/Trailblazer.
  • Rakaydos playing a Diplomat.
  • Herf Nerder playing an Ace/Hotshot.
  • Sarone as the Spy.

I'd be interested in seeing where this goes. I've always wanted to play in the Empire (hell even be EVIL in the Empire) but defecting could be fun too depending on the reason why we defect.

Question for concept concerns, while we need to be in AoR careers do we need to stay completely in them? With 150 xp I can see taking up new specalizations. Obviously no F&D since without FE but I can see reasons for combining say Medic with Doctor from EotE

I'm definitely interested. I have wanted to be involved in an Imperial based campaign for a while now, ever since seeing Finn's look of disdain at the horrific actions of the First Order.

I would be interested in either Quartermaster or Trailblazer, both very different but interesting Specs. I have never played a Human before either so I'm fine with doing that.

Commodore is a third Spec I find intriguing, so I'm flexible I guess

Assuming I'm selected I've been tossing around ideas in my head either for a Commander or maybe a Engineer mad scientist depending on what other people have in mind. Though I'd be willing to be flexible if others have concepts that they really want to try as I could think of something for most of the careers.

Though I'd likely avoid the Spy since my character in Edge of Darkness is ex Imperial Intel and I don't want to bleed the two concepts.

I'm interested. Would near-humans (I was thinking Mirialian) be acceptable? Presumably the Empire must have some non-humans at a lower level.

Are force-sensitives allowed?

Edit: I was leaning towards Soldier, Commander or Spy, in that order.

Moar Edit: What is the restriction on extra obligation? Also, is timezone any object (I'm GMT)

I can see ways to argue for a low level Near Human. Admiral Thrawn highlights that exceptional Near Humans do make it in the Empire. But you would need to be exceptional (but PC's are exceptional people!!!!). I know I toyed with the idea of a Chiss for this.

As an aside in a rebel table top game Im designing I've made the Empire less overtly hostile to near humans and most of their prohuman attitude is reserved for those that don't look human. So Mirialins and Chiss' in my setting are treated as near equals and can go far in that version of the Empire.

Interesting, though I was actually thinking of going (seemingly) unexceptional - a nonhuman in a fairly low-ranking role brought on to make up numbers for want of anything "better".

Incidentally, when in the timeline would this be set?

Assuming I'm selected

First come, first serve.

Force-sensitivity is allowed, provided you progress through the Emergent or Exile trees.

Chiss, Mirialan. You can probably squeeze Zabrak in. Certain branches outside of the Military might be inclusive of some species, like Cerean, Devaronian or Falleen, provided they are exceptionally skilled.

Droid probably works too, but I have one of those myself

Yet more questions: Are force users subject to Conflict? I was toying with an idea that used Harm a lot, but if conflict's a thing I'll do something else.

Incidentally, when in the timeline would this be set?

Probably a year or so before the Battle of Yavin.

One of my inspirations was the description of the Nebulon-B frigate in the Age Core, where it mentioned a number of them had their crews defect, taking the ships with them. I was thinking this group could be the Kuma.

I meant to mention them, but they slipped my mind. Yeah, droid would be interesting.

That's a good question, and I hadn't put much thought into it. On the one hand, there won't be much room at the start for a Force-sensitive to explore their powers, aside from trying to keep it on the down-low from the Inquisitorius, so I'd say "no." On the other hand, a part of me is saying that the dark side is an important part of Star Wars, and shouldn't be hand waved like that.

Darkside would be great fun, but not really fitting with the defectors theme

Unless there is a selfish motive for defecting, or self preservation.

Yet more questions: Are force users subject to Conflict? I was toying with an idea that used Harm a lot, but if conflict's a thing I'll do something else.

I think Conflict should be a thing. If we're going to make use of powers from F&D I think Conflict would be a good way to balance their effects. Plus .....where's the harm in earning Conflict? We're starting out in the Empire where we'd be encouraged to gain Conflict. Rising above that later on as the game progresses I think makes for interesting character development.

I do have a Force based concept I've kicked around (that also used Harm lol) but I'd only play him if we stayed evil :P

But overall, I think if we are going to make use of Force users it should come with all that entails. Just because you start out bad doesn't mean you have to stay that way and redemption could be a theme (more so if we are eventually going to defect anyway)

Yeah, I'll think I'll avoid the evil stuff then, no Grey Jedi shenanigans for me :( .

Of course, if we get away with the ship, we'll have to change the name. Can't be sticking with an Imperial name...

.

Are we taking 0 XP, Knight Level, or something else?

Well, the Kuma is an Alliance vessel in Empire at War. I picked that one because it had a neutral-sounding name and didn't appear any any other stories outside of Empire at War.

Are we taking 0 XP, Knight Level, or something else?

Knight level. See the second spoiler tab.

To be fair Gray Jedi weren't Jedi who made use of the dark side of the Force but Jedi who tended to go against the wishes of the Council. Qui Gon wasn't a gray Jedi because he made use of powers like Harm, but because he tended to do whatever he felt was the right thing to do, Council be damned.

Pencil me in for a Diplomat

Would anyone mind if I nabbed Soldier? I have an idea for a Trailblazer/Emergent I like.

I'll go Commodore then.

First come, first serve, everybody. Better make your choices!

  • Rakaydos as the Diplomat.
  • Tea as the Soldier.
  • Richard as the Commander.

Don't forget to work out what your particular role on the ship is.

If you did Force User would it be possible to be in the Inquisition?

I'm not too keen on that.
