I need to make a couple of repairs on some ships, a neb b's peg (that goes in the stand) broke off, and a few tie wings snapped off while I was trying to paint them. I tried using something called zap-a-gap and it didn't seem to work on the tie wing. Any suggestions on what to try?
What glue(s) work/.
For the Neb b's you really want to pin them to reinforce the peg, otherwise no matter what glue you use on that small surface area it will break off in the stand eventually.
I use gorilla super glue, and I have a citadel drill set. Basically just use the smallest paperclip you can for sizing and drill a hole that size in the peg and the model. Then clip a straight section of the paperclip and fit it into the peg and the model at the same time, then clip the extrusion off. Then glue the paperclip inside the peg, then the peg to the model. I've done this on my CR90s and it works like a charm.
Zap-a-Gap is a cyanoacrylate based Superglue. It should work. There is no reason why it would not work, because that's what its designed to do...
HOWEVER.
The surfaces may not have been ready - TIE wings snapping tends to deform the plastic on the edges, which leaves you with tiny, tiny, tiny contact points and surface areas - which need to be cleaned to be put back together.
In short:
Cyanoacrylate "Superglues", are going to work. If it doesn't, your Glue is Bad or your join is Bad. Take the time and keep it slow.
I would not recommend a plastic Cement on either, for 2 separate reasons:
1) Welding Melt for Plastic Cement will destroy what detail there is on the TIE wing, and potentially melt straight through the wing itself.
2) Paint will always block the Plastic Cement from working, and you'll generally get a better bond with Superlgue... That is because No-one can tell you what sort of Plastic it is right now... And a Plastic Cement for ABS will not work with Polystyrene and Vice Versa... Superglue is designed to work on these surfaces... Clean them to remove any bad glue... Flatten the joins to make them mate as much as possible... Then, if you feel you need to , roughen the surfaces ever so lightly...
THEN Glue.
HOLD for the 30 seconds as directed on the Bottle.
Great, thanks guys.
Yeah, you should definitely reinforce/replace the peg on the nebulon. I snapped a corvette off (due to foolish dice tray movement). At first I just glued it back on, but it was not strong enough.
I replaced it with a small cut of thick paperclip (about 8mm long, 2mm wide). I unfortunately don't have a drill, so I used the remainder of the paperclip heated under a flame to melt a hole back into the stand (I couldn't get the piece out.) and a little way into the model.
Just be careful if you try it that way, I pushed too hard and came out the top of the corvette! I then easily repaired that with a little blue tack (all I had) and some paint.
Pegs will also continue to re-snap because it is the point that experiences the most force when the model is bent/twisted/moved.
Another option is, instead of re-fixing the peg, to use small rare earth magnets. I do this with any of my ships where the peg breaks, because it is a more permanent solution. You can super-glue the magnet to the base of the ship and another to the top of the peg (sand it down or file it a bit to create a better join before glue). Just make sure your magnets are facing the right direction, otherwise your peg can, in fact, repel a ship of that magnitude.

Where do you get REMs that are small enough? I have some small (~.5cm x .5cm) ones, but even those would be pretty big for those Nebulon pegs...

Awesome, thanks man! Ordered. ![]()
I would also suggest getting a bottle of Zip Kicker, or some other accelerant. Dab glue, hold parts together, spray. Instant dry glue. Just that fast. Zap-a-gap s designed to be used with Zip Kicker.
