Tomax Troubles

Hello Fellow Xwingers,

I am trying to figure out Tomax and the TIE Bomber! Here is how i run him..

Crackshot

Homing Missiles

Extra Munitions

G-Chips

I have thrown both cool hand and adrenaline rush on him, but true to my nature i like the idea of that extra attack power. Sounds great right? right! Here's the problem...he doesnt last long! so, to get a better understanding of who he could be I am petitioning the collective x wing mind! For you, how do you use him? attack? support? how do you fly him? conservatively? aggressively, knowing he will go boom (which means your other ships arent)? Lets figure this guy out!

I was looking at him with Crack Shot, Twin Engines, Tie Shuttle and Ysanne for extra evade.

Extra durability you may get through Rebel Captive / Moff / Kallus, although that would be too expensive... You can also try to avoid arcs with Intelligence Agent.

I've been thinking of using Tomax with 2 Interceptors - 100 points.

Tomax + Crack Shot + Tie Shuttle + Tactican + Mara Jade + Engine Upgrade (34) Mini Stress Shuttle

Soontir + Royal Guard + PTL + Autothrusters + Stealth Device (35)

Carnor Jax + Adaptabilty + Royal Guard + Auto thrusters + Stealth Device (31)

Fly Tomax behind both interceptors dishing out Stress At Range 1 or 2 plus reusable Crack Shot (Awesome)

yea that crack shot is pretty awesome! from my experience he just doesn't last long. do you guys just expect this and utilize his ability until he dies (turn 2 sometimes)? or do you have a strategy to keep him alive longer. because with 2 agility an extra evade wont do much in this 4+ attack dice meta lol. that is why i switched from support shuttle to attack. i figured if he could at least blow up a ship before he went down then it might be worth it! I will admit i have not considered him being a stress shuttle. I like that idea!

I've been using Tomax similarly recently (Crack Shot, Homing Missiles, Extra Munitions, Guidance Chips + Thermal Detonators) and he is indeed very susceptible to crits. I have been trying to use him lately with Ryad and a stock Phantom. People really pay attention to the Phantom, which is a whole other issue.

I try to fly him in relatively tight formation with two aces slightly in front so he has some cover. The ideal situation, imo, is to get your aces at range 1-2 of the opponent and Tomax at range 3 for the first volley so your opponent can't resist the shorter shot even when Tomax is a jucier target.

If you can manage this and get that nice alpha strike with Tomax's ordinance combined with another ace's shots, you can melt somebody pretty quickly.

If your opponent closes the distance on you and Tomax isn't crippled after the first volley, it's fun to drop the Thermal Detonator and grab a couple of cheap 1 hit + 1 stress when you pass each other. Then Tomax can get clear and swing back around to try to get another ordinance shot off.

I also like to start out from one side of the board at very slow speeds using the border as defense to get my opponent to commit one way or another. When it appears the other guy is committing to a line, I'll cut into the asteroids trying to face the other guy head-on as much as possible.

I like to keep Tomax cheap, but effective. Pair him with a VI Tie/D Vessery and Inq for all PS8 fun times.

I usually go Crackshot, Chips, EM, and Protons. Being able to force through a crit is always nice.
