What to buy as a beginner

By YariSamurai, in Star Wars: Armada

Since purchases are being discussed here is the Raider worth buying?*

I have everything else on the Imperial side but never got around to buying the little bugger, and now that the new light cruiser's been announced I'm wondering whether to throw money at it just to have it or buy the second CR90 for the rebel side which can be used well with TRC.

The only role I see the raider in in my fleets is that of an anti-squadron ship with Agent Kallus on board. would that be better than having 4-5 squadrons for the same price?

*I'm not competitive so I'll never field the Clonisher list or anything like that :)

Raiders are squadron shredders or pocket battleships. Extremely maneuverable buggers with okay firepower albeit short range. I like them.

Everything in this game is good and has a role. Similarly, nothing is mandatory.

A few quick thoughts as I show up late:

  1. Vergilius' earlier advice is on point: squadron packs are a great place to start (I would personally get one each of rebels, imperials and one of rogues and villains, which contains stuff for both sides), and play a bit from there to see what you like. Go on one of the many Armada fleet builders (I like hive labs) or the Armada Wiki so you can see all the upgrade cards and proxy those in as well.
  2. Once you get a better handle on what you like, I would advise sticking with one side at first. If you go Imperial, it's hard to go wrong with the ISD (good in so many lists), or the Assault Frigate for the Rebels (same) as your next purchase. The MC80 Liberty is also a good pick for rebels.
  3. From there, you build outward based on what you like. The beauty of Armada is that most ships are quite good in the proper configuration, and fleets of 1 of a bunch of things actually win and are very competitive if you play them well. It's superbly balanced right now.

Haribo

Ehhhh its less like X-Wing in that.

Lets see, I would recommend a squadron pack and a rogues and villains pack from there go by the rule of cool! The game does not have a meta.

Well, it HAD a meta.... which got GUTTER STOMPED at the first worlds. I think it was the worlds....

Yea no squadrons in to 8x A-Wings! Hahahahahaha curb stomped bad!

Holy crap, I'm watching that and realizing that I know Johnathan Reinig. He and his gal work at a local games store I frequent. He's a good dude. We've stood around nerding out over games and Star Wars more than once. Good shop too, I've grown quite fond of it.

There you go. You can learn from a World Champion!

Ugh, I'm not tournament material. I'm purely casual. I don't enjoy the kind of mentality serious competition puts me in. I just want to have fun playing with plastic, cardboard, and dice. That said, in personal conversations, Johnathan is anything but cut-throat. He's just a laid-back, groovy dude who truly enjoys his hobbies. I like that about him. He's fun to nerd out with.

You dont need to be tournament material for this game ^_^

The joy of armada is that a regular list is just as good as a "tournament list" it will come down to you as a player. You dont have to be cut throat to win in this game.

Jeez, I didn't play in my first tournament for a long time. I never played with full rules until that time but always had a fun time!

Always buy what you want to push around a table going pew-pew!

Read my sig, this is what happens when you have no self control. Don't be like me. (at least not right away)

Thank you a lot guys,

that is what I like about the FFG community: if you have a question you have a lot of very nice experts which help you out and really want to make you enjoy your game!
