What to buy as a beginner

By YariSamurai, in Star Wars: Armada

Hello fellow admiraits a trap! Shut up, no it isnt!Hello fellow admirals,

I'm thinking about buying SW:Armada, and I suspect that it is like X-Wing, in which you only get half of the points worth of ships in the core set you need for a rwgular match. So my question is: what should I buy first with the core set?

Thanks,

YariSamurai

Starting out, there's really no bad first purchases :D

And yes, The Core Box is designed to run at 180 points, with a "regular" game these days being 400...

But again, no real bad first purchases... Grab what pulls you and go from there!

Ehhhh its less like X-Wing in that.

Lets see, I would recommend a squadron pack and a rogues and villains pack from there go by the rule of cool! The game does not have a meta.

Well, it HAD a meta.... which got GUTTER STOMPED at the first worlds. I think it was the worlds....

I'd start with squadron packs. There's so much diversity you get by taking the core set units and just being able to change out squads. From there, I'd play the starter scenario once (maybe twice), try the 180 scenario a few times, and work up with units as your budget permits. As Dras said, it really doesn't matter where you start. Almost every unit is good, and your first twenty games will see you learn a ton about flying well.

Welcome to the game and have fun!

I'm proud of us as a community not telling this guy to buy twelve of these and 75 of those well done mates.

To the OP I agree with what everyone has said start with the squadron packs and go from there. If you like a ship get it. If not then don't :)

Thanks. lot guys.

You want this....don't you?

Start with the wave 1 stuff for which ever faction you want to play currently. One of each at least to give you good variety. Then a large ship. For Imperials you can skip the Victory expansion if you want, but motti is a go to admiral and easy to use. Raiders and MC-30s come with a bit of a higher skill floor so take caution in that.

Dice. The ones that should have been in the core because you're short one Blue die for the X Wings.

Past that smartassary, what was said above is valid. Squad packs add some variety to learning the game.

Yea no squadrons in to 8x A-Wings! Hahahahahaha curb stomped bad!

Wasn't that beautiful? If anyone is interested, check Youtube for Star Wars Armada. Look for Worlds 2015 finals. They actually talk about the meta being turned on it's head.

If I could offer some useful advice, (which will be worth what you payed for it). FFG, as usual, did a good job getting the mechanics down. Take a look at REAL naval battles and what a modern naval battle group is comprised of. THAT is a good place to start.

I hope you like Armada! I have a small bit of advice concerning something I ran across starting to play Armada.

Unlike X-Wing, Armada ships are often defined by your upgrades and list as much as the base ships themselves. It's ships are much more difficult to pin down as either being good or bad because so much depends on how you use them and the rest of your list. Between objectives, upgrades, titles, admirals (this is a big one), how many squadrons you want, etc... there's a lot going on to impact how a ship functions.

What that means is that you can have the exact same base ships performing very different roles from one player to the next. I might have 2 Assault Frigates using Ackbar setup firing broadsides while you might have them as carriers for a swarm of squadrons. Very different playstyles, same ships. It also means that some ships are rarely seen together in the same lists, as the admirals and support they need don't fit each other and you end up not getting nearly as much out of half your list as you could be. So if you just go out and buy random expansion A, B, and C you may find it difficult to make a cohesive list out of them.

The Assault Frigate for Rebels and the Imperial Star Destroyer would be my recommended first buys, as they both can be used in a variety of different lists going forward. The Gladiator for Imperials would be a close second recommendation. You're definitely going to want to pick up the squadron expansion for whichever faction you like as well, as they open up lots of possible builds whether you go heavy or light on squadrons.

TLDR: Play a few games with the starter (and an extra dice pack and movement tool set to 2) before you start buying much. Once you see how the game works you can figure out which ships you want based on how you want to play the game.

Start with the two wave 2 big dogs and one of each squadron pack. Street that, role if cool. The core set ships have some really good expansions if you want upgrades.

Its not like Pokemon,

You gotta catch four of em all.

(Ignore me, start slow)

Get one each of the fighter packs, then just start buying the models that look coolest until you have one of each ( I would start with the ISD and home one for the cool Star Warsness of the models). Then play all the ships until you get a feel for what you like and buy more to taste.

biggest diffence between Armada and xwing is that:

1) in armada your generally buying the expansion for the models you want to play on the table and not the upgrade cards, even the best none unique card (turbo laser reroute) comes on a ship expansion that you can happy play four of in a list, which is more than ample for even this card.

2) there is no meta in armada, play what you want, as almost any list is competitive if you can play it well. Armada rewards expertise and knowledge of how to play your own specific fleet not chasing the next big meta list. Most people seem to have a couple of specific competitive fleets that they slowly grow/modify with each new wave.

play what you like. use what you think looks cool, and maybe throw in some combination strategies so the battles are exciting and full of suspense.

metagaming sounds bad to me, do you want to play to have fun or only to win? personally I think people that can only enjoy winning have lost something very important in what I cn only describe as their "soul"

Yet, you want to be competitive. I whole heartedly agree that winning is only important when you are getting paid for it.... or in sports.... but, you do want to be competitive. However, as Jondavies said, you can win with anything, IF you play it right. All that said, I ALWAYS go for thematic over victorious, (hence why I have such a cruddy record at this stuff).

Extra Dice

If money is no object, then simply buy 1 of everything.

However, since money is always an object - Here's what I would suggest:

1 Imperial Star Destroyer

and

1 Gladiator

Just for starters. This way you can fill up a 400 point list with an upgraded Imperial Star Destroyer, Victory (from core set), and Gladiator. You've also got TIE fighters to fill out your list with whatever upgrades you don't take. This should cost you around 60 bucks if you get it from a discount retailer like coolstuff.

Moving forward, you'll want to expand your squadron options, so either an Imperial squadron pack, or the Rogues and Villains pack - both are good. (Rogues is way cooler though and has rebel stuff as well, so bonus!)

If you are playing Rebels, on the other hand...

Home One

and

MC-30

Gives you about the same level of options, and should cost close to the same.

I disagree. The Assault Frigate is a much more versatile ship to purchase compared to the MC-30.
