Special Modifcations - Cloaking Coat

By Poisonedrat, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I'm a little unclear with the wording of the cloaking coat's ability, specifically where it pertains to droids.

"The specialised array does nothing to stop visual recognition"

"Upgrade the difficulty of all checks to detect an individual wearing a cloaking coat using sensors or electronic forms of detection twice. Droids with an Intellect rating lower than the characters Computers ability are affected the same way when trying to detect said character"

My confusion comes in how one classifies a droid's optic sensors.

Theoretically, they are both a) A sensor, and B) an electronic form of detection, but are the rules meant to be read like that or are Droid Optic Sensors treated more like organic's eyeballs and as such would not be affected because it is visual recognition?

I imagine that visual sensors on droids can vary wildly, based on manufacturer and the droid's intended purpose. Some might only have infrared sensors, while others have high-resolution cameras.

My advice would be to narrate it so that the character wearing the coat makes minor adjustments and modifications to it (based on their Computers skill) so that it makes it harder for droids to notice. There is really no need to go into precise details about these adjustments, simply upgrade checks as described and let everyone's imagination fill in any blanks.

I imagine what happens is that the droid's sensor (camera, motion detector, whatever that model has) is processing input data constantly and will take action based on certain stimuli. These reactions depend on the droid's programming/AI/personality.

You use your computers ability to maintain your appearance such that those stimuli particular to that droid are not detected. So even if the droid "sees" you, it won't notice you. It's much like how camouflage works on the human brain in real life; you see something but it blends in with its surroundings enough that you don't know that there's anything there different than the background.

With a good knowledge of droid programming (reflected in your Computers skill rank) you'll know what adjustments to make so that the droid won't see you. Droids with programming too complex (having a high Intelligence characteristic) are beyond the skills of someone with insufficient skill in Computers. But something dumb like a binary load lifter or a fire extinguisher droid is easier to fool.

The way I would be inclined to handle it is that any kind of electronic sensor would be affected.

But the organic eyes of most species would not.

If your droid is somehow wired up to organic eyes that have been harvested from some unlucky being, then I don’t know whether or not they would be affected. It might depend on what kind of mood I was in, and how important it was to the story.

If the droid uses things like radar it is fooled. If it uses optical sensors it is not. To determine this consider the job of the droid. Because a droid like c3po needs to see facial expressions he would not be fooled. A b1 battle droid probably would be fooled because radar like senses make sense for a b1 droid.
