Advice on Squadron Markings

By Piscopas, in X-Wing Painting and Modification

Greetings, everyone.

I've only repainted a couple of minis so far, but before I get much further along, I'm trying to decide how I want to indicate Sqaudrons and markings.

I've seen some pretty cool fleets out there with all the models painted in matching colors, regardless of ship type. While it looks very cool on the table top, I don't know how that fits with the background. For instance, from what I can tell, you wouldn't have Y-wings, A-wings, and B-wings all flying in the same squadron, unless it was an ad hoc group put together for a mission, or due to attrition. On the other hand, a fighter wing consists of three different squadrons, so it might make sense to have them all with a shared paint scheme, if the color stays consistent within the wing rather than the squadron.

I know that the Imperials tend to have fewer markings, but it's within reason that some might sport color schemes. Again, I'm not sure if they should be differentiated by squadron or wing.

What do you guys think?

There have been cases for both. In Episode 4, all the X-wings (red) and Y-wings (gold) have the same markings despite there clearly being more then a squadrons worth. In RotJ, we hear about Red group, Gold group, and Green group (and there's also a Grey leader), and the markings on each ship appear to be uniform. Conversely with the Empire, the 181st Wing (Alpha, Avenger, and Sabre Squadrons) all shared the same red stripes (although those were only for aces). However in books we here about squadrons like Rogue Squadron and Wraith Squadron who have unique paint schemes. I'd say it really depends on how you want to do it.

You could i think with rebels paint squadrons different colors, and use a unifying indicator, like a gold circle or strip on a wing/flank to indicate the wing/rebel cell. For imperials you could do base colors, blue/grey/red and a strip/chevron in red/white/black to mark a wing.

There have been some amazing colour schemes done on models. But at the end of the day it depends on what you want your ships to look like. Do you want a rag tag mixture of individual ships, or a more cohesive looking unit like a wing?

My personal preference is uniformity. All ships within the wing should share some form of unifying marking. Just as all ships within a squadron should share unified markings as well. One way to do this with Rebels is to have all ships of one type using identical colours but with minor variations on individual ship markings. Then add some form of standard emblem or colour to a wing/s-foil or fin to show they are all part of the same Rebel wing. There's numerous references to the X-wing markings on their s-foils, so you can use a variation of that in a different colour maybe. Or just use a simple stripe on the s-foils and add some form of numbered striping on the fuselage.

Most model shops have sheets of decals that can be used. Some have special paper that allow you to print your own decals as well, so that's another option you can use to add some uniformity to a squadron or wing.

The Royal Air Force use a "squadron flash" on aircraft markings on either side of the national roundel. You could use something similar and replace the roundel with a wing emblem.

The US Navy use a lot of really cool squadron colour schemes on their aircraft. The squadron commander's aircraft used to be in full colour while the rest of the squadron wore a low-visibility version.

As some have said, certain squads do have markings: Rebels tend to be colors and number of stripes, see here:

As an Imperial. A new pilot is actually allowed to choose any color for his ship in the range of Imperial Grey to Imperial Grey :D

Cheers for the opinions and links.

I think what I've decided for the Rebels is to go with a tri-color scheme, varying the layout based on the type of ship. They're still tied together because you use similar colors, but they will be different enough to appear to be different squadrons.

I'm still mulling over my options for the Imperials.

Here's another question about squadron markings...

With the HotR set due out in a few weeks/months, I started looking into Poe's Black Squadron and I discovered that it is a smaller squadron consisting of 4 T70s and an A-wing. I thought it might be cool to paint this entire squadron up in the correct colors (maybe even be able to field the whole thing in an Epic game!). The problem I'm having is the markings on Poe's stabilizers don't really fit with the pattern established with Red Squadron from the OT. I can't figure out how they would fit in with the remainder of the squadron, or how the markings would differ for the various squad members. I tried Google and came up short. Maybe someone who has read the Poe Dameron comics has seen better pictures of the different ships?

Apart from Poe's T-70, none of the ships in Black sqaudron are actually black, they just have the regular T-70/A-wing paintscheme

Ok. There goes that idea.
