Fighting three Imperials in a 100-squad list

By Jaden Corr, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Newby here! Have been playing the game for a few weeks now and my competitor usually plays the same squad. TIE Defender (Vessery), Slave 1 (Bounty Hunter), TIE Bomber (Scimitar). He continuously feeds his ships with target locks, giving Vessery two attacks every turn, while he can also place a new target lock after attacking and using it immediately.

I've been playing with YT-2400 and YT-1300 mostly, but as of yet have not been able to win a single game! Any ideas how I can compete with him. Must say he is quit experienced, so it might just be that! :) I also have some X-wings, A-wing, Y-wing, E-wing at my disposal.

Thanks for helping me out guys. Eager to learn some new skills to finally be able to compete with him.

Does Vessery have the TIE /D title on him?

A friend of mine would fly a Leebo/Chewie list whihc ends up being quite beefy, I believe it went like this:

100 points

PILOTS

Chewbacca (52)
YT-1300 (42), Push the Limit (3), Kyle Katarn (3), Kanan Jarrus (3), Millennium Falcon (Evade Version) (1)

“Leebo” (48)
YT-2400 Freighter (34), Determination (1), “Mangler” Cannon (4), Jan Ors (2), Outrider (5), Anti-Pursuit Lasers (2)

Idea being you have Chewie right in the middle of things with a couple evades sitting on him and Leebo coasting out at range 3 taking shots. Originally Lando and experimental interface were included but limiting the number of evades able to be used in a single attack kinda gimped it.

Welcome, Jaden.

Can you give us a rundown of your opponent's typical 100pt list and what expansion packs you have access to? That will let us know what your pool of ships and upgrades is like, and we'll be in a better position to offer advice.

Good times.

Thanks for welcoming me.

I currently own an OT Core Set, X-wing expansion as well as expansions of an A-wing, B-wing, E-wing, Y-wing and Tie Advanced. Also own the Millennium Falcon and the YT-2400 freighter. As you can see I am going all out Rebels. :)

My opponent's typical list contains for his Defender at least the Vessery ship, as well as TIE/D and Ion Cannon. His Bomber not sure off, but for sure Long Range Scanners, as he is still playing around which bombs to use. His Firespray-31 I don't know, but will keep my eyes open next time.

Thanks for your response, see the above post for the different upgrades.

I actually flew quit a similar squad.

YT-1300 Chewbacca with MF title, PTL, C-3PO, Kyle Katarn and Engine Upgrade, and the Leebo YT-2400 with Determination, Outrider title and Mangler Cannon.

So here's one you can try:

Chewbacca (42)
Push the Limit (3)
C-3PO (3)
Kyle Katarn (3)
Millennium Falcon (1)
Biggs Darklighter (25)
R5 Astromech (1)
Blue Squadron Pilot (22)
Total: 100
Hopefully if you use Biggs to help protect Chewbacca, your title and C-3P0 can help keep you alive longer in the end game and you won't get destroyed by an alpha strike. Otherwise, you can try this one:
Blue Squadron Pilot (22)
Fire-Control System (2)
Dash Rendar (36)
Push the Limit (3)
Heavy Laser Cannon (7)
Kyle Katarn (3)
Engine Upgrade (4)
Outrider (5)
Prototype Pilot (17)
Total: 99
You can leverage the maneuverability of Dash to get far away and use your HLC. You're allowed to fly over as many obstacles as you want, just don't stop on them. The B-Wing and A-Wing can pitch in, as opportunity allows. Try blocking with your A-Wing to help protect Dash.

Thanks! So if I get what you're saying, in your last example, you'd expect my friend to go after the freighter first, before going in for the small ships, therefor keeping them out of range and dodging in whenever opportunity strikes?

Have you thought about mixing it up a bit with some other ships with higher Pilot Skill.

One problem is that you have 2 PS5 pilots with a 100 point list and he has a PS6 and PS5 that both might shoot before you.

You could try a different combo designed to maximize your alpha strike and hit him hard before he has a chance to shoot:

Here's one that I have fun with and could mess with his list. (Variation on a Dash-Corran list)

58 - Dash Rendar, Push the Limit, Heavy Laser Cannon, Engine Upgrade, Kyle Katarn, Ourider Title.

40 - Wedge Antilles, Proton Torpedoes, R2D2 and Guidance Chips.

PS7 and 9 allows you to move last and shoot first.

Wedge fires Proton Missles on Vessery and if you have a focus, good chance for 3 hits and a crit versus 2 defense dice.

Dash follows up with a HLC shot and assuming you have a focus and Target lock, good chance for 4 hits versus his 3 evade dice.

In a good first round, you're looking to get him down to 2 hull and in a round where his dice fail, you're killing him before he shoots.

The Key after the initial shot is moving Dash to try to keep him at range 3 and out of your opponent's arc.

The good thing is if you have Dash stressed, you make a green move, get the focus and then can boost/barrel roll out of arc.

HLC with modifiers is an ugly thing.

Jaden,

The goal with that list is to try and use the A-wing (B-wing too as opportunity presents) to block the movement of his ships eliminating his actions. That will cut way down on the productivity of his ships!!! Then, Keep Dash out at range three, flying over asteroids to keep him from pursuing easily and cracking him with the 360 HLC (he does not get a range 3 agility modifier when using a secondary weapon) The A & B then hopefully can focus fire on what he just hit or take shots of opportunity, but their job is to help keep dash alive longer by blocking. It'll take practice to fly it well, but if you can keep dash out of arcs/at range 3 he will have to shoot at the A & B, while Dash is burning him down. The expectation would be, he is going to try and take down dash first because he is the most dangerous, your goal is to make it so he can't focus fire on dash, and also he will be doing a lot of unmodified shots if you get good at blocking.

Thanks for the advice. Might try this indeed. Though it is going to be difficult to stay out of range of all his ships, seeing as I need to get in range as well, and his Slave has the possibility to fire outside his fire arc. Nevertheless, definitely worth a try!

It is definitely more difficult than it looks when you watch pro tournament videos, but its a bit easier than I think you are imagining. You move Dash, barrel roll or boost, use ptl for the other (Barrell Roll/Boost) or a TL or focus depending on situation. Next turn, you make a green move, more than likely, remove your stress, get a focus from Kyle, again B.R. or Boost to gain position, use PTL if needed (Rinse/Repeat). Through all this, jump those asteroids if you can to get obstructed if you are on the defence. Dash (with this setup) should more than likely be more manueverible than Kath or Vessery, and with the 1 pt bid, you can give him initiative so you move last making your 360 WAY more useful than Kath's rear aux arc.You probably won't be able to avoid all arcs all the time this way, but you will get to choose who you let shoot you more often than he gets to plan a focus down with all his ships. Again, it will come down to your blockers though, the more block you cause the more Dash tears in to them ill prepared for a HLC volley. His list is tough, but if you can cut down on his ability to TL and reposition with the blockers he won't last long. Personal Note: I need to buy a YT-2400

Well advised, JS.

Thanks! And with the Chardaan Refit I can possibly used ever more interesting upgrades... Need to buy a certain expansion, I guess... :)

Speaking of chard an refit, this is a list I like. Haven't played against much full meta, but I feel it is reasonable.

Falcon/A-Wings (100)

Chewbacca (54) - YT-1300

Predator (3), Gunner (5), C-3PO (3), Millennium Falcon (1)

Green Squadron Pilot (23) - A-Wing

Push The Limit (3), Chardaan Refit (-2), A-Wing Test Pilot (0), Autothrusters (2), Wired (1)

Green Squadron Pilot (23) - A-Wing

Push The Limit (3), Chardaan Refit (-2), A-Wing Test Pilot (0), Autothrusters (2), Wired (1)

The A's make great blockers and if they miss the block are hard to hit and can do some work, overall not as hard hitting a list, but if I could fit a Dash (and owned him) I think I could make it work.

Hmmm, maybe like this:

Dash Rendar (54) - YT-2400

Veteran Instincts (1), Heavy Laser Cannon (7), Intelligence Agent (1), Outrider (5), Engine Upgrade (4)

Played another one yesterday, used some of your advice! Sadly, he blew me off the table once again. His Vessery is just killing me with 2 attacks every turn and target locks every attack (meaning two per turn), meaning he practically gave me 3 hits every attack round. Better luck next time! Am going to try one of your other suggestions that time around.
