Hunting horror movement question

By Hobbyist, in Mansions of Madness

I had a turn where the app instructed us to move the hunting horror up to 3 spaces to have as many investigators in range as possible, then attack all investigators in range. I was in the next space from it on the other side of a door (i had just opened the door, and decided not to enter) the other investigator was 2 spaces farther in the same hall.

Does the creature

1. Go through the door into my space and attack just me.

2. Go past me to the space between the two investigators, but be unable to attack since neither is in its space.

3. Same as 1, but then being able to perform a second attack on the other player from my space

4. Same as 1, but then moving 2 more spaces and attacking the other investigator in his space.

5. Same as 2, but be able to attack both of us from that middle space.

We decided that 1 made the most sense, since the creature did not seem to have a ranged attack, and the wording of the action sounded like it would move, then attack

5 I believe. Since it says to attack as many people in range it is about to make a ranged attack. So if it were in the middle space it would attack both investigators since they both are in range.

You move the horror to a space from which it has the most investigators in range. So, 5. Some monsters are able to deal ranged damage, and for those monsters the app calls out for investigators in range. I don't see how it could have been 1: if that were the case, the wording would have been "the monster moves up to 3 spaces towards the nearest investigator", but you had quite a different wording

Actually, I didn't give you a correct answer.

The Hunting Horror moves so that it has the most investigators within range. So:

a) he moves through the door; it can do this since the app doesn't refer to range (doors block range, but don't block movement in general)

b) at this point, the horror is in the space with your investigator 1; you check how many investigators are within range of the horror

c) you then check if by moving further the horror the number of investigators within its range increases or not; if not, the HH stays in the space with Investigator 1, and attacks Investigator 1 and all the other investigators that are within range; if don't, then d)

d) you move the HH one space further, and recheck if in this way you max the number of investigators in range; if so, perform the attack, otherwise move once more and resolve the attack from the third space of its movement

I have a similar query... I opened the door, the Haunting Horror spawned on the other side and give my investigator a horror card that caused restrained. So the investigator is stuck in her space outside the room and couldn't enter. The end of the turn then says "The Haunting Horror moves 3 spaces towards the investigator within range with highest strength."

Since range is blocked by the door, does that mean the hauting horror stays put in the room it spawned and doesn't move to the investigator immediately on the other side of the door?

That would be my reading, yes. Remember than in-game doors are always considered closed, so that the Hunting Horror actually doesn't see the investigator behind the door. If there are no enemies in range, the Hunting Horror then doesn't move

Thanks! It actually does make sense, and if you select the second option of no attack happening, it will usually instruct to move without accounting for range.

I played it the second time today since getting it yesterday, and won my first game! I'm quite impressed with it, eager to show the game to my friends :)
