"Helping" others with their dice results... Order 66.

By DanteRotterdam, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

A heapin' spoonful of Skill Monkey can cure the "look at the table" blues. That short series of short segments opened my eyes to just how innovative these dice can be.

Sadly, I have perpetrated many of the crimes listed in the podcast, despite good intentions. Most of it was fueled by a self-imposed obligation to help familiarize new players with the system I've put on their table, but you know what they say about teaching a person to fish....

This was a good podcast to listen to. I even had my Wife who is not a gamer listen to it and it sparked a lot of good conversations. This is typical of what I considered "advanced" class in gaming in EotE. Expert class is knowing that the boost die giving you an advantage because of using the right tools and saying you managed to figure out a quicker way to work on the engines next time

As a GM I am forced a lot of the times to narrate and interpret the results for my player. and one of my players is a typical "Alpha gamer" that does a lot of what the podcast is about. "Oh that roll is a success" soon after the dice are rolled.

The best I got from this is having my wife DESCRIBE what happened with 2 advantages. Then based on the description I gave her the mechanical result.

It's because of this that I don't really allow dice rollers at my RL gaming table. People should do the work. It's more fun and it teaches you about the system. This is especially true for new players.

I don't care how they do it. I don't care if a dice roller does math or a person. My job is to run the game not boss players and tell them what dice they can and can't use. And if a dice roller speeds it up for them that's fine. I'll never "dis-allow" something based on a personal preference unless it breaks something. Do I care how the symbols come up and are tallied? Nope.

Some of my players love to "help" others with their dice, and I am guilty of it from time to time as well. Does anyone have a direct link to the particular podcast you refer to? For future visitors, direct links would be easier than combing through all the podcasts. "This is really awesome, let's all discuss it. Go find it yourselves." :P

I agree :) The awkward nature of transitioning from the audio world to that of the hypertext :-p

This thread is talking about the latest episode (Ep 82), so it's up-to-the-minute ;)
