Is Maarek getting overlooked?

Both Vessery and Countess are 3-actioning 35-36 point monsters with abilities used every turn to greater effect.

I still think this is a solid list:

Got token stacking, Palp, a PS 7 defender with re rolls and target locks for Vessery.

Soo, you're planning to spend your action on getting a TL but then not use that TL and rely on naked Predator instead so Vessery can get his TL? That's... sub-optimal I think. There are many ships other than Stele which could give TL to Vessery without diminishing their own efficiency. And many ships other than Vessery that could accompany Stele without forcing him to play below his optimum.

Ok I do understand that. Was thinking more the shuttle for locks. Its been a few months away not thinking about small plastic ships with a new baby... take it easy on me :)

If I ever won the world tournament and could design a card, I'd design a PS9 Defender Maarek with Miranda's ability. It's a great ability, and one that fits Maarek perfectly(it represents the LSE system from the games).

I don't agree. What do you mean by "set up right"? I mean, sure, you can take a TIE shuttle with system/weapons officer and follow Rexler around with a fairly useless ship all day and rely on your TL re-roll and your opponent not having any shields and you wanting to spend the focus on attack rather than defence. Or you could take Predator and cross your fingers that your dice aren't too bad, but at the cost of...well, cost.

High PS on a Defender is also not really worth that much. It's nice, sure, but they really don't get as much out of it as an Interceptor or TAP.

Rexler's problem isn't that his ability is terrible (it's not that bad) it's more that his cost + ability doesn't equal the power of the other 3 named Defenders so they're almost always a better choice.

You've swapped out the wrong pilot, IMO. Take out Maarek and add Vessery in and it's a solid squad. Assuming you have Target Locks to help him out (which this squad does) Vessery is better than Maarek. Therein lies the problem this whole thread is discussing. It's a better squad than your first attempt because in that squad Vessery didn't have much help but it could still be improved by swapping Maarek for Vessery.

Sometimes you do the 1-bank, sometimes you Barrel Roll out of arc, but mostly you just get to kill stuff earlier.

I think it depends on what the local meta is as well. My local store has been seeing quite a lot of Dash/Ghost builds and well Maarek esp backed up by Palp loves to just eat those for breakfast.

Maarek is strictly for PS, or else maybe with Palp to get his ability off. I've been using him in a double xD list and his ability proc'd once and that was on the kill shot so it didn't matter anyways.
