All the threat missions in Return to Hoth specify to add Dengar to the Open groups. If it says Open Groups: 3. Add Dengar to these Open Groups - does this mean that there will be 4 in total? Or does Dengar count towards the 3, and it will be Dengar + 2 others?

He does not count towards the limit, he is added as an extra card and is known to the heroes. (Basically that part of the setup instructions is open information.)

Oh, and by the way, (not to hijack the thread...). In the final mission of RtH, am I right in assuming that
if the Rebels have one Boon in their play area at the start of the mission, but use it during the first part and return it to the box, they don't get to remove Dengar from the board, when that mission trigger activates?
In other words, it would be good, if I could force/pressure them into using it early in the mission?
Yup. Boons tell you to return them to the box when used, so they are no longer on the play area.
