Asteroid question

By weskingofscots, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Sorry if this was answered, i did a quick search with no luck. We had a debate about damage moving through

Asteroids. A player said that as long as the template did not touch the asteroid, he takes no damage.

But when i look at it, the ships base is moving through the asteroid.

I know if you end your move on the asteroid you roll for damage, but what about this moving through?

Can you point me to an official ruling on this?

Thanks

You only roll for damage if your ship ends it's manoeuvre on the asteroid, or if the template overlaps the asteroid. It doesn't matter about the path the ship's base takes to get to the end.

Page 13, under Maneuver.

When a ship executes a maneuver, it is picked up from its starting position and placed in its final position. The full width of the ship’s base is ignored except in its starting and final positions.

Anyway this would raise a hell of a lot of ambiguity on how you move the ship along... This would be impossible to manage.

No, it's not. I've seen it used in other games. That's why the question comes up often. It's a natural assumption that X-wing uses the same system. Of course, it's an incorrect assumption. :)

You have to validate at each point on the curve if you are not overlapping this add a lot of over head on a lot of maneuvers happening in a game. When playing competitively, "One millimeter" only is important. This is a pain to handle already on a move. Then you have the situation where the Obstacle is near the end, and you have to "extended" the maneuver to see what would happen. Or with three other ship around blocking your try to test the maneuver and it became to be a pain. I would not play a game competitively with a system like that.

If the template and final position of the ship does not overlap the obstacle, then there is no effect. Same for Proximity Mines, Conner Nets, and Cluster bombs.

The ship is assumed to jump from start to end of the template. Path along the template only comes into play if you overlap a ship at the end of the move and then you have to move back along the template.

Related to this also is the fact that if you perform a maneuver where part of you template is out of the play area, your ship is not destroyed as long as the final position of the ship is completely inside the play area.

The X-Wing rules are pretty specific about how your ship gets from one end of the template to the other: you pick it up and one and and put it down at the other end. It doesn't move along the template*, so your base isn't overlapping obstacles that are right next to your template. Likewise if your template is at the edge of the mat, your base isn't partially off the mat, because your base isn't there.

*: There is an exception to this. You move your base along the template backwards when resolving an overlap between ships.

thanks everyone.
